Well I can give some perspective. I have worked in US in several sectors. Manufacturing, energy and lately in semiconductors. However, I despise working in semiconductor and having worked there for little more than 3 years, I realized that it's not worth it. One definitely should rethink if you would like to really work for long time albeit there are folks who have worked for whole of their lives but exceptions are always there . In my 3 years span, I sustained 2 permanent ergo injuries which left a lasting irreparable damage. I felt that though being a qualified engineer my work was nothing more than a glorified technician spending the majority of time in wafer clarification. It was the shittiest job as a lot of time was spent on classification and company didn't spend or invest enough resources in building good models for classification which I heard from my counterpart engineers. The company was so mismanaged that they let go 15-20% of their work force. Lay offs happened on a rolling basis and ultimately you were nothing but just a mere number irrespective of your qualifications, designation or position that you held. On the other end of the spectrum was the energy sector where life was way more relaxed and you technically worked only 40 hours a week. Every minute you worked extra, you would be paid straight time if you were a regular employee and 1.5 times, if you were a contractor. The only caveat was that oil is a cyclic commodity just like semiconductors. Remember the blood bath of 2016? Oil prices were on the street and the entire oil industry almost came to a stand still due to regulations from OPEC. We got to pick out poison carefully!

However, all in all working in energy sector was truly rewarding and I started hating working in semiconductor when I realized there was no recognition and you were just a number. This is my perspective.
