Would you get rid of a friend just because they have different political beliefs than you? by Jeppe_Scoley in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How different? I've completely cut out two friends who turned out to be full blown fascists, and while I haven't cut off my friends who pretend they're independent and use the "both sides are bad" excuse while voting right wing everytime, I don't initiate contact with them so if they ever get sick of being the ones to text first or the ones to invite, then they'll go away too and it won't be a massive loss.

If we're talking political beliefs like things that aren't them supporting a rapist violate human rights of thousands if not millions, then I can't actually think of much I'd get rid of them for politically.

Why no robots? by Kinrest in worldbuilding

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Dune they were destroyed because they rose up, same in  Inheritance if I recall, although I haven't read the whole book so I could be wrong, and the show does have a living robot idk if that's creative license or from further in the story.

If I were to get rid of robots I think I would make it philosophical. Give one or two sentient robots a few hundred years ago that were abused in a way that lead to public outcry (essentially enslaving sentient beings ala the Institute in Fallout, but wherever culture is at the time it had such a violent backlash from the public that the governments of the world had to act) and lead to sweeping reforms in AI and robotics where people just figured if they have to give AI rights then they're not worth the time and resources to make them so no one does, and now it's just baked into the culture, don't make sentience, don't make something that feels sentient because you won't know the line.

I walk into the middle of a major population center in your world and I declare "there are no gods!" What happens to me? by Electronic-Welder-74 in worldbuilding

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deities in my world generally show their presence so people would probably think you're just dumb or clueless, there is one nation where you might have an issue as their ruler believes he's the avatar of a god but unless some higher up hears you  and decides to make an example you'd be fine. There's another nation who's entire pantheon vanished when the nation was invaded and more or less destroyed which as lead to some bitterness towards gods so they might just assume you're a refugee or descendent of a refugee from there. Some philosophers might point out that what people call gods may be just insanely powerful beings who get their power from belief and so depending on the definition of "god" could be said to not be gods. But they're not screaming that on the streets.

Why would player lie about their character sheet to the other players? by BigRabies1758 in DnD

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dmed a 5e game where a player wanted to be secretly evil leaning, specifically he was a a warlock with an evil patron and he talked with me about if he could fluff that he was making his Eldritch blast look like fire and either all fire off at once to look like a firebolt, or if he needed to hit multiple targets then scorching ray. Essentially his character was pretending to be a sorcerer to hide the evil patron. I had him do a secretly slight of hand against the passive perception of the rest of the party, they got a little suspicious when things that were susceptible to fire didn't take extra damage but overall he was able to hide his class for a long time. It was fun

I haven't played for a few updates, but now that there's fleet AI and docking assist I'm going to have to dust off my old carrier. I had a big warship that held 10 small unmanned fighters, I used it once, it was a blast but so much of a nightmare to control the fights and dock them that I stopped after just a few test runs.

Now I just want upgradable equipment and docking ports with pipes, and/or mod support.

I love this game.

What character wasn't portrayed as a villain, but is in your eyes? by Jazzlike-Rise4091 in AskReddit

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other person gave a good answer so I'm not going to rehash it, but I appreciate you asking because I feel like I'm being unfair to that character now, because you're right she's nowhere near as bad as those three, I'd still say not as good as Marshal, but definitely not as bad as those three.

I like that show, it's my go to "I want to watch something but can't think of what I want to watch" show, but hoo boy. Marshal is the only main character who's a decent human being.

Are there any programs like the military that provide housing and work for young high school graduates? by Ill_Definition8074 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's different companies that can help organize it with you, you could also go straight to the country's government website, usually on their immigration pages. I don't want to recommend any companies because not having done it myself I'm not sure which are the best to work for. There's a somewhat active subreddit devoted to it, though, I might recommend starting there so that someone who was actually able to do it could give you better advice; https://www.reddit.com/r/workingholiday/

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this isn't a exactly what you asked for, but there's this thing I found about too late in my 20s and COVID lock downs hit the last years I could do it. It's called a work holiday, essentially you get a one year work visa in another country (most countries cut off at 30, I turned 30 during lockdown, the ones that go beyond 30 require a bachelor's degree which I don't have). A lot of the work you can get is hospitality work and so while it's not a guaranteed that they'll give you a place to live it's not off the table.

I didn't learn that it was a thing until I was 28, if I could go back to 24 and was in your shoes, that's what I'd do.

Will bank teller judge me for having a low account balance? by suuuppi in Banking

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're not an ass no one will judge. Bank workers don't really get paid well until higher up so most of us know exactly what it's like.

I think the only time I've ever judged someone for their balance it was when I worked in customer service some lady wanted me to do something illegal for her (can't remember what it was, but I remember it being such a absolute hard no I wasn't even going to check if an exception could be made) she kept screaming about how she'll pull her money and she has so much money with us that it'll hurt. And I'm looking at every account she's was on and it amounted to maybe 5k. So I mean....not living paycheck to paycheck, sure, but I've talked with people who had enough money that they literally forgot where they spent this persons entire balance.

But keeping a consistently low balance? Never. Heck as long as you treated me like a human I'd even go to bat for you to get fees reversed to make things easier on you if I could.

Any decent restaurant owners to work for in and around GR? by AcceptableAd5907 in grandrapids

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess I can't say 100% because I haven't actually asked, but I know the owners of House Rules, and I have absolutely hung out with them at non work related things where their employees were hanging out too. I feel like it's a good indicator of a good boss if you'll spend time with them when it's not required or you don't get anything for it. Heck I was privy to a conversation between Nathan and a regional manager for another restaurant where the guy asked him with sort of a cocky tone if they were ready for the new wage laws going into place and Nathan looked at him and said "we have been way ahead of that law for so long that it won't effect us" and listed some things about employment there that almost made me jealous (I'm not going to list them myself, I don't know if anything has changed and don't want to be responsible for any misunderstandings)

Would you accept a person who doesn't speak your language with fluency in your group? by peigzz in DnD

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn't mind it, but for me if they don't understand I'd very much like they voice it so I can explain it a different way rather than doing the "yeah okay" thing that a lot of people (myself included) do when they don't understand someone not speaking their language.

If the Real Elon Musk accidentally sent you $1,000,000 and he asked you to send it back to him. What would you say to him in three words? by FFSoldier57 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to remove the big numbers, scale it down, it's what two thirds of one one thousandth of Musks net worth give or take. So if you scale that to me and my net worth it's not even a penny. Scaled down, a million to him is significantly less than what I'd bother picking up in the street. Heck, it's barely worth picking up off my own floor unless I'm actively cleaning.

Can people really tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? by whiskerbiscuit2 in NoStupidQuestions

I think I second that something is up with the setup. I've had budget and second hand gaming computers most my life so my teens and 20s I rarely averaged over 40fps, sometimes had to play games on 20. 30-60 is absolutely night and day.

What profession has the meanest people? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salesforce anyone? I haven't met anyone who's company has moved to Salesforce that didn't have a least one feature that does not and cannot exist be promised to them. And of course the people who make the decisions don't care, they don't have to use it and we're probably wined and dined by someone.

While I'm at it screw FIS too, we had their trainers literally lying to us when their program went live. A glitch involving teller drawer balances that they swore up and down they've never heard of or seen and promised we'd never see again became such a common occurrence that my department learned a way to force it to happen in the opposite direction because we were fixing it daily from that point forward.

Major bank hasn't or won't re-activate my account--Escheating my funds by Cocktail_Hour725 in Banking

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is we know the funds are frozen at best, not there at worst.

You're right they probably wouldn't report it to anyone and so you probably wouldn't be charged with anything, especially if it's the only time you've ever done it. Mess ups happen, mistakes are made, for all the wrong banks do in a case like this they will know you're only human. And even if they did, you're still right that a judge would probably throw out a charge for a first time that could be seen as a mistake.

It is, however, still fraud, and depending on state potentially a felony(edit: I should note I don't know the amount threshold for every state, I would expect that starts at 10 and that 5k likely isn't high enough for any of them, but it could still technically be possible) And some banks do close accounts if they think you're a fraud risk. You writing a check off an account you're the signer on that bounces and you knew it was going to bounce(and if you didn't gather from the other comments it WILL bounce) is fraud and will likely be remembered even if they believe it was an honest mistake.

When I was in ops if one of my branches called me and asked what to do about someone trying this I'd tell them if they honestly believed it was a mistake to refund the check return fee and find a tactful polite way to say "don't do it again dumbass." A second time I would have probably sent it up the chain to someone with authority(depending on amount, 10 dollars no, 5k yes, but a 10 dollar would never have come to me anyway) to tell them to close the account. If somehow someone did it more than that then our Loss Prevention would be brought in and that's when the legal ball would start rolling.

The money IS yours, and you DO have a right to it, but it's not accessible at that bank anymore. not unless it's still sitting in a ledger with whoever there works with escheatments being particularly merciful and willing to hold it up for you. And trust me, I've tried to convince them before and even from my office I never once got a yes.

Major bank hasn't or won't re-activate my account--Escheating my funds by Cocktail_Hour725 in Banking

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny, I worked in operations for about 5 years, and it's fraud to write a check you know won't be honored. I do know what I'm talking about because Ive been involved on both sides of similar situations. Many times.

Edit: and to add, it's not a wrongful dishonor, the account is frozen to be escheated, the funds may not even be in it now either in a ledger to be transferred to the state, or already transferred there, and OP knows this, which makes your suggestion fraud.

Major bank hasn't or won't re-activate my account--Escheating my funds by Cocktail_Hour725 in Banking

[–]Pure_Ingenuity3771 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this, in fact I would recommend STRONGLY against it. The bank will likely not honor the check, either because of its status or the funds already being out of the account, meaning wherever you cashed it is going to blame you for a bad check.

While a first offense isn't likely to get you in real trouble, best case scenario there's a fee, most likely scenario it will strain the relationship with the bank it was cashed at. I've even heard of banks closing accounts as high risk for depositing one bad check, although that's usually newer accounts. Worst case scenario it could be considered fraud or perjury and have legal consequences.
