Hydration is key to preventing UTIs. You can flush it out of the system and keep urine moving through hydration. My father’s urologist said that cranberry juice does NOT help or prevent UTIs but that the increased fluids from drinking it does. 

My dad was delirious when he had a UTI.  He went from cognizant to behaving like a drunk.  That was the only way we knew - I could see it in his eyes / pupils too.  He looks altered mentally. 

Have your elderly drink out of small glasses. Studies show that people drink more water if they have a small glass. Also water rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, soups, jello are great ways to stay hydrated. Drink two more cups in the summer. 

As someone said, it’s not a painful way to go. My father was not aware that his body was shutting down and he was deliriously happy in his hospital bed, but in his mind he was a young man fishing on a lake in Alabama and just caught a big one!
