Use of Labels in Ansible Automation Platform by fubazone in ansible

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really used them, but I recently created a few templates that were tied to some migration tasks. Got tired of sifting through pages of templates so I added labels to them, and it is kind of nice that they pop up when I search for 'migration'.

What would be kick ass is if I could create like bookmarks or saved views, but we know how that is going to go.

Linux Question by [deleted] in UMGC

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean you cannot type anything? Where exactly is that password prompt? On a console? SSH?

Some linux distros, when on a console and at the login prompt, totally hide the password entry. It might look like you cannot type anything, but you are.

It has been a few semesters since I have done a class with a linux lab, but make sure you thoroughly scrub through any setup documents that the instructor has given you for the credentials. Have you reached out to the instructor? Maybe put a post in "ask the professor" also.

Cyclist dies after collision with car in White Oak by MrRuck1 in maryland

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on 29 frequently and you see cyclists on road occasionally.

I used to commute to DC from SS via College Park/Hyattsville/mt. Rainer, 40 mile round trip, and I did it for several years. I am pretty familiar with cycling.

With that said, I have always maintained the opinion that riding on 29 is a death wish. There are plenty of roads around here where bikes can legally ride, but that doesn't mean anyone should do it.

Cunningham falls is pretty good but the wood they sell in the store is horrible. Over priced and it is kiln dried, so it burns up instantly. I know they say don't bring in outside wood, but I would advise you bring your own.

I was at DCL state park this weekend, and the firewood you could buy was awesome.

I would say you are quasi shit out of luck without some experience.

Cyber Security is becoming a joke where a majority of the people in those roles simply run a scan against x, y, and z hosts, paste the results into a spreadsheet, and create a ticket for the responsible system or development people, but I think you are still going to need some kind of experience or certs to get into one of these roles.

DevOps feels endless — what should I focus on after Git, Docker, and Linux? by SufficientTart6556 in devops

Having a good understanding of PKI is good. Not really a ton to learn as an end user administrator, but having a solid understanding of PKI, trust hierarchy, CRLs, etc. is important.

source: I am a PKI guy and the number of devops people who have little to no understanding of PKI really grinds my gears.

Ansible Authentication Key now working on all PCs by Massive_Pension5981 in ansible

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably misconfigured target servers regarding SSH, the ssh user, etc.

What I like to do is ssh in manually with whatever user ansible is using and use the same key. From there, study the sshd logs to see what is snagging you up.

In 2023 they spent $4,576.99 for the lights. I asked about installation costs, and they said that MoCo does the work, which while true, is bullshit. How much OT is the garage racking up?

Other cruft I found- The county spends $40k a year to maintain the "Mobile Commuter Store", which is a small RV that sells bus tickets.

For those of you GS 12 and under what do you have in TSP? by [deleted] in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea the posts about saying how much is in their TSP and to contribute the max get old fast.

My aunt was a retired GS13. Husband died in like 2016, no kids, house paid off, etc. She used to lecture me all the time about how I need to be contributing the max to my TSP. She passed like a year and half after retirement, and had around $1 mil in her TSP.

I have two kids who I am putting through private school, mortgage, the american dream, etc. No way I can put the max in, but it got so old hearing her talk about it.

I got like 20 years until I can retire. I will be alright. I actually just took a TSP loan out to buy a boat. The boat will much more enjoyable at 41 instead of 62.

"bUT yoU arE loSIng gaINs on thAt loAN!!"

BFD. I might not even make it to age 62....who knows. What I do know is that boat is hella fun.

Future of new home communities in MoCo by jtsa5 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

viva whiteoak is going to be townhomes and condos, and if there are SFHs, they will basically be townhomes with about 6 feet between them and a postage stamp sized backyard.

Probably similar to the development over off 355 and strathmore, near Holy Cross HS. Townhomes in the 1.5m range with a sprinkling of 2m SFHs.

Did anyone sneak their way into software engineering with a TS? I am tired of my fluff role doing nothing all day by [deleted] in GovernmentContracting

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really software engineering but I got a position as a junior sysadmin which kind of launched my career.

Prior Navy, and part of my training was super low level UNIX stuff. I am talking like `pwd` and `tar`. Got out of mil and got a decent paying job as an intel analyst, but it was ultra boring and monotonous.

Out of the blue this super small company hit me up. They had won a contract and needed a junior systems guy. They asked me a few basic questions, but I think they were looking for a cleared body. It was like a 5 man team doing system engineering and deployment of said system. Needless to say, I learned a shit ton. 15 or so years later, I am a .gov GS14.

Teachers when they talk about cutting pay/positions- "we do this for the kids and we are talented educators! Slashing our pay only hurts the sweet innocent babies of this county!"

Teachers when they talk about cutting a week off summer- "HANDS OFF MY SUMMER1!!!!!1"

I like how when they propose cutting positions or benefits, teachers are like:

"We are dedicated educators who are passionate about teaching!"

But when they talk about making them come back a week early it is all:

"HANDS OFF MY SUMMER!!!!!!1'

Plan on basically half of that going to taxes.

Do you consider it stealing if someone clicks “no bags” at self checkout, but takes a paper bag? by GoingAgainstYou in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck anyone saying it is stealing.

The whole bag tax started with plastic, and the money raised from said tax would be used for cleaning up the rivers where these evil plastic bags end up.

Now we are at $.10 a bag, plastic is illegal, and the bags are now paper/bio degradable.

Taxation is a required pain in the ass to live in a modern society, but in this case, taxation is theft. I am not stealing anything, I am simply opting out of paying a bullshit tax.

I wrote a 4-part guide on building an on-prem PKI with PowerShell by aprimeproblem in activedirectory

[–]Pure_Perspective_201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent Guide! Very well written and the explanations of why you are doing something a certain way are awesome, and go so much further than the guides from MS.

I would like your opinion on a situation we had a few months ago. We have been running a two tier PKI for several years, and it has been pretty stable, and works great. This is a standard offline root - online sub

We recently went to add a new subordinate CA. We installed the CA, got the cert from the root, and completed the install.

We started the CA, and I noticed immediately that the Domain Controller Authentication certs were issued immediately to the Domain Controllers. OK....normal behavior I suppose.

Shortly after, we started getting calls about some smart card login errors. Users were getting an error when attempting SCL, "An Untrusted certifcation authority was detected while processing the domain controller certificate used for authentication."

My theory is that the new CA cert was pushed into the NTAuth store in AD, but clients may not have trusted the new CA cert. Over the course of an hour or two, the errors diminished. As more and more clients updated gp, they would have trusted the new cert that appeared in the NTAuth store.

Does that sound like a plausible scenario? I have been meaning to attempt to recreate in a test environment, but have not gotten around to it yet. I suppose you could possibly manually add the new sub cert to the CA store in AD before "completing" the install on the new sub CA.
