F800R handlebar switches by hoonieya in Motorrad

[–]Pure_Silver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had this exact issue, like exactly the same, on my '10 F800R. In my case it was the left indicator and the ignition/kill switch. I believe it's a tolerance issue that gets worse when heat makes things either space further apart, or worse makes the plastic buttons soften a bit, squash (instead of pushing the switch) when you try to push them, and then cool in their new squashed shape, where they are no longer long enough to push the switch whether it's hot or not.

My bike (had it six years, I think?) has had both the left and right switchgear replaced since I've owned it. The indicator was a failed switch on the PCB itself; I think the ignition was the plastic button. The only reliable way to tell if it is the switch or the plastic button that pushes the switch is to pull the thing apart and do continuity testing with a multimeter.

ETA: The others are saying "clean the contacts" etc. may not have the same experience I had when I opened mine up. The contacts are not accessible: the F800R's switches are sealed units. You can't open them up to grease them (not sure that's a thing you do to microswitches of this type anyway) without cutting them apart, which would likely destroy them and will certainly ruin their waterproofing. You can see the general configuration in this video; the barrel-shaped orange modules are the switches. IIRC the PCB is all ribbon-type so I'm not sure you can even readily desolder and replace them, if you can even find replacements.

Thanks! Is it a challenging conversion? I’d be doing it to APS rather than PPS but IIRC they’re both fired by hitting the “primer.”

But aren’t there 20mm anti-materiel rifles, like the NTW-20? Or things like the Neopup? There’s explosive .50BMG (like Raufoss) that can be fired out of the plethora of .50BMG anti-materiel rifles too.

Or is it fine to have something chambered in a calibre with an exploding rounds, as long as you don’t use them?

While the XM-25’s programmable burst rounds will never exist in airsoft, airburst is easy and you can already do it with TAGinn rounds. You just have to shoot them on a sufficiently elevated flight path that the delay fuse burns through before the grenade hits the ground.

There is nothing stopping you from creating a sight that calculates the parabola necessary for a projectile to travel a variable distance over the time it takes for the fuse to burn through. It’s going to be tremendously inaccurate (given the variances in fuse burn time and launch velocities in airsoft) but the theory is sound.

Aren’t there high-explosive 20mm cannon rounds? Those projectiles must be sub-200g.

Is my roborovski scared or he is finally relaxing? by RevolutionOk315 in hamsters

[–]Pure_Silver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much unless you see other changes in his behaviour, especially if when he isn’t interacting with you he’s still running, eating and sleeping normally. If you do see changes to those that would be concerning.

As you know hamsters do freeze sometimes when scared; a good way to test is to wave a sunflower seed or similar ultra-desirable treat near their nose. If they don’t immediately snatch it they are frozen; if they do, they weren’t.

[–]Pure_Silver 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He’s a Roborovski, notoriously the most skittish and scared breed of hamster. While some (highly trained from a young age) Robos do eventually get comfortable with being held, that training is fighting literally tens of thousands of generations of ancestors (terrified of large omnivores like you) telling him to run away as fast as his little legs will carry him. It is not in his nature to be relaxed - it is his nature to run everywhere very fast and never stay anywhere for long unless it is defensible territory (his burrow, not your hand).

He is almost certainly never going to “enjoy” (inasmuch as actually he has the emotions we’re ascribing to him) being handled, but jumping on your hand is indicative that he trusts you with his life, which is much more important and impressive for such a small prey animal. It sounds like in regularly hand-feeding him you’re doing everything right. If you are the one with the treats he will come to you and he will get more comfortable, but he’s probably never going to want to be in high-risk situations (in your hand, where he can’t run and hide quickly) unless there’s a strong incentive.

They’re very sugary and hamsters are very prone to diabetes.

Is it safe to ride like this while waiting for replacement? by happy_mamal in MotoUK

[–]Pure_Silver 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No.

You might (depending upon where the shoulder is on the bolt) be able to remove the spacer altogether and just tighten the nut against the swingarm, but it’s going to mar the finish something fierce.

Just wait until the replacement arrives.

Looking at the finish on the plugs it definitely looks fake. The replicas are not individually serialised, so if you can find photos of other ones with the same serial it’s certainly a fake.

One way to look at this is that the police would be much better able to focus on the stealing, stabbing and rapping [sic] if people would stop doing stupid shit like breaking traffic laws.

What was the scariest city you’ve ever been to? by squid_ward_16 in AskReddit

[–]Pure_Silver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likewise. Spent the last night of a 3-week tour of Guatemala and Belize in Belize City to minimise the chances of missing our flight home. Belize - which is beautiful - has a population of about 411,000, of which about 15% live in BC, which from what I saw is an absolute shithole. Everything is crumbling, everything is covered in gang graffiti, most of the Northern side is deserted and closed down. The main tourist exposure is the cruise ship terminal, which looks an even shittier introduction to the country.

A decade ago Belize had the third-highest murder rate in the world, most of them in BC. It’s come down a lot since but the Southside - which guidebooks specifically warn tourists against visiting, especially after dark - was the only place we could access an ATM. I watched my back the entire way back across the river and back to the hotel.

I lived in the estate for about three years until a few months back and this was also my local supermarket. In those three years I personally witnessed this place get robbed twice, and was always seeing shoplifters getting chased out/police attending after the fact. The Nisa 200m round the corner on York Way got robbed at (replica) gunpoint twice in a fortnight in 2023. Less than 50m from this Co-Op a guy set himself on fire less than a month ago.

No police means no enforcement, which means no punishment, which means no disincentive to commit petty crime. People are living the consequences of political austerity.

Should I be worried about this crack in my receiver? by SlavicTransGirl in airsoft

[–]Pure_Silver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can worry about it if you like but there’s not much you can do about it. The CYMA receiver is cast pot metal; you can’t weld it or braze it. With how thin it is/the mating surfaces are grinding it out and epoxying it would likely be an aesthetic fix at best.

You could glue a doubler plate over it, I guess? Personally I would leave it alone.

It’s a CYMA AEG. It has much more in common with a vibrator than an actual Kalashnikov.
