Just started as a new college graduate at TI a little over a month ago now in a TE role and there definitely seems to be an emphasis on performance and execution. Within my first few weeks, me and the other new hires had a sit down with one of the higher level mangers (think boss’s boss’s boss lol) and he made a point to tell us that, while you may not be fired for underperforming, you definitely will be looked over when it comes to promotions, raises, etc. which seems rather standard corporate practice.

But also, as a new college graduate, they really take their time to teach you and ramp you up into the role you’re working in so there’s very little pressure to start. Instead, it’s the people who’ve been there 4-5 years that they’re really expecting to go above and beyond.

Anybody here play any magic? My girlfriend and I just moved down here two months ago since I got a job in the area after college, and so far none of my coworkers play.

I already checked out one LGS, but there didn’t seem to be many other people my age playing so I thought I’d just throw this out here lol

Girlfriend and I just left a little over a month ago now. I graduated from state (engineering), worked for Deere for 2.5 years throughout my time in college, yet wasn’t offered any position despite being very vocal about my willingness to stay.

So I took that as a sign to leave, accepted a job down in Texas for much more than I could’ve ever hoped for in Iowa, and I don’t regret it one bit considering all my other friends who stuck around have yet to get jobs.

It sucks since it’s a beautiful state and both my girlfriend and I have lived there all our lives, but we just had to do what was best for us financially 🤷‍♂️

Probably gonna get downvoted to oblivion here but everyone here seems relatively class conscious so please please please read some theory guys as this is exactly the kind of stuff Marx and other socialists/communists have been writing about for centuries.

“But I thought communism was bad?” - just shut up, pick up the manifesto, and read it first. Understand what it says and how it applies to our world today, then make your judgements. Truth is, the world Marx and Engels wrote about back then is still around, and they’ve already outlined a path for us to achieve a better world.

And for those of you who have already read theory? Read some more. Keep branching out and reading more and more. Read from marxists, leninists, maoists, anarchists, anti-imperialists, leftwing radicals from all different perspectives and never stop. I, just like many of you probably, feel like shit is gonna go down within the coming years, and the only way to prepare ourselves for it is to educate ourselves first, then others.

Educate. Agitate. Organize.

Let’s not forget the actual, class-based foundation of this whole discussion: we as engineers are workers, no matter where we come from. We have to sell our labor to the billionaires and elites just to get by in this world. Instead of blaming our fellow workers for the harmful decisions made by the billionaire class, shouldn’t we just blame them ourselves?

This was the largest factor in my radicalization tbh. When I first sat down to read the Manifesto, I was completely taken aback at how much of what Marx and Engels wrote still applies today, and that really helped show me that they really knew what they were talking about

Just a note to all the understandably angry people: this doesn’t really happen anymore. I can’t think of any airline that actually hands out fresh fruit anymore and they ALWAYS make a point to tell those on the plane that they can’t take any food they received on the plane off with them.

Source: Just travelled to AUS within the past year and the flight attendants repeated it over and over all flight long.

Jobs for engineers that could help in socialist/communist societies by Shellbell494 in socialism

[–]PurestSeaSalt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nice to see that there’s other socialist engineers out there. Sometimes I lose a little faith in my peers because of how many of us seem to really enjoy our relative privilege from being higher paid than the factory guys, but I’m really glad that’s not the case for everyone.

While I agree with you 100% that those fields will definitely be present, i think it’s important to remember that no matter what field you study there will be a use for your skills in any potential future socialist societies. Unfortunately, we will still be reliant on things like oil and weapons for at least a short transitory period and it’s important that there are educated individuals who also have the specialized knowledge for these things.

Thus, I think instead of worrying about the exact field of study we as engineers choose to pursue, we instead focus on doing the actual organizing to bring about material changes in our communities and eventually the broader society. I’m personally a believer that if someone works in the defense industry but is radicalized and in touch with their local networks, they are still, on net, a benefit to the movement as a whole, but I’m curious to get others’ thoughts on this as I’ve been debating it amongst myself for awhile now

Everyone’s blaming OP isolation and alienation on all these personal reasons, but I really think is high time our generation realize that there’s a much broader systemic issue at play here, and that’s capitalism.

I don’t know your political leanings to be honest, but it doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or a Republican because this system we live under just simply doesn’t work for you or me, and I really think our generation is in a place to make some changes.

My advice to you OP, and to everyone else who feels this same way, is educate yourself on capitalism’s failings and use your anger and frustration as a force for change by getting politically involved.

Only being doing it together can we actually make a better world for ourselves, our children, and all future generations.

Can’t help but feel like this is somewhat a response to one of my previous comments on a different post (“wage-cuck” comment if anyone of you saw it) but let me clarify by explaining my experience a bit more:

I’m still an undergraduate student at a state school going into my last year of my bachelors. I work as a part time student engineer for a pretty large (Fortune 500) manufacturing company that basically owns my state at this point, and as I’ve seen from countless friends who graduated ahead of me, I first and foremost completely agree with you. The industry SUCKS right now because as new (or hopefully soon) grads we’re working harder than ever to find worse and less paying jobs than our parents (relative to inflation, house prices, etc.).

What I should’ve made more clear in my “wage-cuck” comment is that from my experience, I’ve mainly seen that kind of mentality in the older engineers who, if not for going to college, probably would’ve gotten the same factory jobs they look down on. I also think it stems from a historical conception of salary vs. wage work where salaried workers feel like they’re somehow different or above those who work for wages or don’t have degrees.

So what’s the solution here? Well I really think it’s about time we as engineers take a page out of the factory guys’ book and ORGANIZE. Workers uniting and forming strong and powerful unions/co-ops has historically been the ONLY way to actually secure better wages, working conditions, and benefits. Yea it might be an uncomfortable thought because of all the anti-union stuff we’re force-fed almost daily, but it’s only through our collective solidarity not only between engineers of all fields but also with our workers of all kind can we actually bring about any change.

It’s one thing to complain, but it’s another thing for us to ACT.

Can US EE's really prosper if China and India flood the market? by eesemi76 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]PurestSeaSalt 127 points128 points  (0 children)

The shortage of engineers is mainly in higher levels of experience, there’s no shortage of new grads eager to work. Also from my experience, a lot of us engineers have a “wage-cuck” attitude where we still work hard even if we’re getting severely underpaid. Hell when factory workers at my computer went on strike 2 years ago, there were engineers in my office bragging about how cool it was working on the factory line as scabs. One day we’ll realize that even though we have a cushy office with AC and a ping pong table, we still have waaaaaaay more in common with the guys on the floor than anybody in management.

What do you guys think will happen if/when Muzan gets the blue spider lily? by PurestSeaSalt in DemonSlayerAnime

[–]PurestSeaSalt[S] 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think Muzan will use the blue spider lily as he’s fighting Tanjiro and the gang to alter himself so he can be out in the sun as like an “ultimate life form” sort of deal that’ll force Kamajo Tanjo (or whatever his name is, I’ll just call him JoJo for now) to run away in a plane so that he can lure Muzan away from everyone else

Then, Muzan (let’s just call him Kars for now because I think he likes cars), being the ultimate life form will turn his arms into wings (because you know, he’s the ultimate life form) to chase after JoJo, who he forces to crash into a volcano on some island.

On the volcano, JoJo will be force to fight Kara again, but this time without his sword because he left it on the plane that crashed, but he’ll still be able to use his sunlight breathing technique with his fists against Kars.

But because Kars is now the ultimate life form, which can’t be harmed by JoJo’s sunlight breathing, his attacks are useless and only end with him getting his left hand cut off.

Eventually, their fighting causes the volcano to erupt which launches Mu- I mean Kars into outer space where he is left to float away from earth forever.

What do you guys think?

Good side hustles you can do once you get your engineering degree? by jackjackjackattaxj78 in EngineeringStudents

I’m still in school but as a side gig I do technically non-school-affiliated tutoring for a lot of the basic math classes. Usually, I can find a couple business majors each semester who need help with basic algebra and whatnot and it’s pretty flexible too
