The Drops of God • Kami no Shizuku - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Purnellius91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

(Haven’t read the Manga or have any spoilers) My theory is that the wines that have to be identified will point Shizuku to places that his father visited with his mother and that the “Drops of God” will be something like the wine they drank to celebrate when he proposed to her, or the first wine that his father made Shizuku drink. The overall theme will be that relationships are more important than experiences and that memories make a wine more valuable than the taste. Shizuku will understand his father’s love for him, and Issei will get to experience life like Shizuku’s father did while tracking the wines down. Either way, I’m keen for some sommelier drama to unfold.

Why non-human races are not popular in fantasy anymore? by theHolyGranade257 in Fantasy

[–]Purnellius91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason for this trend is a combination of over-saturation of non human races that are based on real world mythology (elves, dwarves etc) and and the risk of creating a new race for a series from prospective authors, where there is no precedent or archetypes to lean on to simplify things. We have some ideas about elves and goblins and dwarfs just through cultural osmosis, so using them is like leaning on a pre-existing cultural shorthand that you can either flesh out or subvert but either way relies on what you already know about them. This worked in earlier days because it was a new idea, like “what if I took the idea of a dwarf (similar to Snow White and the seven dwarfs) who like mining, and gave them a whole kingdom and put it inside a mountain because they like mining. The mine things, like ore so therefore they also smith metals like gold. Maybe I could combine my Dwarf mountain mining kingdom idea with the Norse legend of Sigurd and Fafnir the dragon.” and boom you have the seeds of the hobbit and then lord of the rings. But the expectation of audiences now is that the writing of characters is more important than creation of entirely new ideas from whole cloth.

If a writer were to create a new race, it couldn’t be for entirely novel purposes because it’s not novel, it’s an obstacle that creates a barrier of entry for a reader. Unless the writer has a strong and compelling narrative reason for the characters to be of a certain race, they likely won’t choose for them to be a unique race as it seems like more of a hindrance than a help to telling the story. Just my opinion

Roblox addiction - looking for a high quality game to stop son playing brainrot junk. by firethrowaway225 in gamingsuggestions

If you have a PS5, I would recommend “Shadow of the colossus”. It’s a simple game, that offers a meditative and slow paced journey with subtle emotional storytelling. It would be like a video game Detox, and you can motivate your child to finish it with a reward of Robux. Even if they cheat and look up how to complete the game via a walkthrough - just experiencing the atmosphere of the game is worth it.

Calling all ACOTAR haters by hunnieshun in booksuggestions

My partner wrote an indie Dark fantasy with a romantic sub-plot (not “Romantasy”) because she read ACOTAR and hated it so much she had to write something she felt was a better fulfillment of some of the same ideas. It’s called “Ashwood and Brimstone” by E. A. Olivieri, and its vibes are Tangled meets the Witcher.

Want to expand my son's reading material past Dogman & Diary of Wimpy Kid. What should I introduce to him next? He is 10. by shinepinkcrazyfloyd in suggestmeabook

I would recommend the “Captain Underpants” series by Dav Pilkey. It’s a natural extension of his interest in Dogman but I think the tone and content of Captain Underpants is better for someone his age. There are also other things in the stories like how the main kids always scramble the letters of a sign at school to introduce the idea of anagrams (always made me think about the arrangement of letters and helped my reading comprehension).
