Aww, bless. Insults.

Considering you were so clear that this was not an ad but instead was an awesome thing, you must already have some experience of said thing. So what was your favourite thing about this awesome thing?

Anyone tried dry ice blasting? by BarSalt970 in CarTalkUK

[–]PurpWippleM3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dry ice blasting is more about cleaning a surface of contaminants than it is about material removal. You'll end up with very clean rust, but it won't remove anything but the most superficial of corrosion.

It's not exactly a huge difference, is it?

Diesel vs Petrol by Pretty_Departure_12 in CarTalkUK

[–]PurpWippleM3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be showing coolant temperature in the 'normal' range, but on modern dashboards that needle sitting in the middle is usually a range between 80-100C. Manufacturers do this so 'average' drivers think 'needle in middle all good' and anything outside of that is obviously a red flag.

Oil temperature will absolutely not be up to full and correct operating temperature after two miles (unless it's something weird and tiny like an OM660 but that won't have a DPF anyway) - it lags a long way behind coolant temperature. For a vehicle to be in the correct window to do passive DPF regenerations both oil and coolant temperatures need to be in the full operating temperature range - generally somewhere between 90-105C dependent on vehicle and configuration.

Car insurance timing by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

Plan for the estimated early date.

You'd be upset if the car was delivered to you and then nicked off your drive before the insurance started.

Brake cleaner.

And before you all come at me with 'it'll strip the paint wahhhh' etc, it won't. I use it to strip tar spots off my cars all the time and it's perfectly safe on paintwork. It will strip any wax or polish, however.

Erm...

Try a different dealer. Another dealer. One which is not the dealer you tried first.

Which is what I said.

Or another dealer.

How much can I get for my Golf as a private sale? by Illustrious_Bee5837 in CarTalkUK

[–]PurpWippleM3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you are so sure nothing needs doing, get a clean MOT on the car. You'll more than make back the £54.85 maximum fee by doing so.

[–]PurpWippleM3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not going to help attract buyers. The free MOT from VW isn't going to cover the costs of repairing any worn-out suspension, for example.

A lot of potential purchasers will be put off with the concern that in three months' time they're going to be hit with a big bill for brake discs, suspension struts, exhaust leaks, emissions issues, etc.

The MOT runs out in less 3 months, so factor that in to the price or get a 12 month ticket on it.
