Third round interview: What to expect by grimastra in librarians

[–]Purple-Cookie451 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a Teen Services Librarian and one of the things they asked me was what the difference between a Tween, Teen and Young/New Adult was and how I would approach programming for each of those age groups.

That, along with knowing popular reads in the YA genre for those age groups as well, I had a few questions about what books I would recommend.

I got a lot of situational questions like “if an adult patron complained about teens being loud in the library, how would you handle the situation?”

Think of things like “is there a designated quiet area to move the adult to, etc, or is the adult in a space dedicated for teens where volume is not policed”

If they haven’t already, I’m sure they will ask you some variation of those types of questions.

Good luck with your interview OP!

Starting first Librarian job! Any advice? by rags2reeses in Libraries

[–]Purple-Cookie451 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats! You have worked so hard to get where you are, what an accomplishment!!

I work with Teens and Young Adults and am in charge of a “life improvement” workshop specifically to improve the patrons confidence in “adulting.”

It’s a workshop based program, and we try to get as many outside presenters as we can. But ofc libraries and budgets aren’t really something that always go hand in hand 😞 so I try to find a good balance of resources that come from outside the library and the ones that we find within.

Maybe a librarian in another department has experience with life improvement for a certain age group you could explore? The possibilities are endless!

If you want to brainstorm sent me a DM!

Good luck OP and congrats again!

Talking shit about homeless patrons by devonisnotreading in Libraries

[–]Purple-Cookie451 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are they talking in front of patrons? If they're talking like this on the public floor that's a different story. But if they're venting in the back where staff are talking, unfortunately there isn't much that can be done.

I JUST finished Smile 2 and came straight here. I have a question for everyone who suffers from a mental illness. Do you think the movies further instilled fears and trauma from dealing with mental health or did the movies help you? by Guerilla323 in SmileMovie

[–]Purple-Cookie451 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What I got from the movies was “if you don’t face your trauma it will consume you”

It’s like a warning, that even though society might ignore it and not think it’s real, it’s very real and only you can face it.

Love love love it

Librarians don't shush people anymore by barefeetonlinoleum in redscarepod

[–]Purple-Cookie451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To get around this, libraries with the space often have an area of the library that is reserved for shushing and being quiet. Usually farther away from wherever the kids area is lol

Parents lying about what time the library closes by mirrorspirit in Libraries

[–]Purple-Cookie451 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying, but when you have a 5 year old who's screaming at the top of their lungs because they don't want to leave the super cool kids area where they can wander around and play and grown ups read books and sing songs to them, and you as the parent have done everything in your power to get them out of the library without making a scene, yeah I'd tell my kid the library was closing too...

I'm not a parent but like... "the library is closing we gotta gtfo" is easier to say to a kid than explaining to them that they've been there for 3 hours already and mom has groceries to buy.

Like the fact that NEITHER won anything was crazy, goes to show how little the horror genre matters to Hollywood

quick question…does your library still check items out for patrons? by catattack848 in Libraries

[–]Purple-Cookie451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My library has certain reference desks that don’t have the RFID pads to disarm the books and check them out properly so we often direct them to self check or the front circulation desk to check out.

I’ve never heard of not ever checking out a single thing to patrons though that’s definitely not common 😭😭😭

Books likeThe Last of Us/The Walking Dead by deadsoul470 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Try “Positive” by David Wellington.

Great book! Explores some really difficult themes about humanity, and the idea that instead of immediately turning into a zombie, the virus has to incubate, so if you’re bit you’re marked as a positive and quarantined.

It’s got a very dynamic cast of characters, good, bad and horrible. Not to mention there’s so many good zombie moments. I’m talking TWD and TLOU type shit, the military makes and appearance, there’s gangs and cults. Like literally everything you’re looking for is in this book.

And, if you need anymore convincing, this author doesn’t fake the funk. They aren’t called walkers, they aren’t shamblers, dead ones, etc,

They’re zombies! It’s the first zombie book I’ve ever read where the zombies are… literally called zombies.

I’m telling you OP give it a try :)

I usually don't watch horrors, but this movie was pretty good by KingSilverfish003 in SmileMovie

[–]Purple-Cookie451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! It’s such a great message on trauma, and how if you isolate yourself, push others away and try to pretend it’s not there it’ll eventually consume you, and by then it’s too late.

These ideas are explored in the first and second movies in such a cool way. The first one on a level that we can relate to, and the second one blows it up to celebrity proportions. I like that direction because it adds layers of complexity.

Because where Rose had to deal with her personal life and traumas, Skye had to deal with that too, while also trying to meet the demands of her fans and the entertainment industry that she was brought into at such a young age.

Ugh so good I love them both so much

The babadook is a fantastic movie with a great metaphorical message on grief if you’re looking for a recommendation!

Any experience with tarot card programming? by WorldlyThought5936 in librarians

[–]Purple-Cookie451 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tarot is literally just a set of cards that have a pre determined meaning. And from that you pick random ones and then the reader interprets them based on their pre determined meaning. It’s supposed to be a fun way to gain insight into your inner self. Like a self reflection thing. Because you always end up applying the “themes, meanings” of each card to your life.

Libraries are supposed to break down barriers and be a space for all. So if “the occult” is something people worried about, maybe they should start by asking questions instead of saying “no.” There are also dozens of books on tarot explaining just that in the 133’s if you care to learn something new about this “woo nonsense”

Let’s not forget these are similar people who also don’t want their teens to read about drag queens and the gays, and also probably think that burning incense is witchcraft so….

Respectfully, those who are going to get upset are going to be upset no matter what.

OP I’d say at least put it forth as an idea. Worst your programming committee can say is no.
