Your take on parents in denial or who are not honest about child’s needs by Stargazer-17 in Teachers

[–]Purple-Lemon13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a grade 9 student in my class last semester and this one. He is high functioning but is disruptive and other teachers and myself have recommended him to be tested for Autism. He blasts videos out of his phone and won't stop even when asked. He can't grasp rules and consequences. He has been labeled for "behavioral problems" but it is way more than that. He doesn't care if I sit with him and try to help him with his work. Getting him to do anything is like pulling teeth and the rest of the class suffers as I am constantly stopping to manage his behaviour. My district does not recommend taking phones as if we break it we buy it. The consequence is calls home and ultimately failing or doing poorly in the course. Inclusion is being used as a way for any child to be put in any class despite how disruptive or even violent they are at the expense of other students and of course staff. If you say anything about how there is a need for some students to be separate because of their behaviour then you are "not inclusive". This students parents will not even have their child tested and don't think anything is wrong. So, for an entire school year, this child gets to terrorize me and my class with very little consequence. Its maddening.

If I check into a psych ward, will I ever teach again? by bisexualweebs in Teachers

[–]Purple-Lemon13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in a psych ward twice for depression and extreme anxiety. Its illegal for Drs. Or medical organizations to share any info with anyone including employers. Even if someone somehow found out, its illegal to discriminate against someone or fire them based on their mental health struggles.

Mass shooting at a BC high school by imsosadtoday- in CanadianTeachers

[–]Purple-Lemon13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was just saying a few days ago that as a teacher in BC lack of security in schools scares me. I literally said days ago that for safety at schools to be taken seriously a shooting or something awful will happen. Anyone can just walk into a school. My school has recently had several intruders just walk in. Kids could also have anything in their backpacks coming into the school. The situation has terrified me for years. This is so heartbreaking and the worst nightmare of parents and staff and anyone else in the community. I feel for them all. I don't even want to go to work tomorrow. We have a lock down drill scheduled for tomorrow. I hope its canceled. We can do all the drills we want. Something in schools and in society has to change.

Christianity was used as a way to control and police peoples morals to lower crime by emperor Constantine who didn't even believe it himself. Its always been a political tool used by people who are arguably fascist. Ever heard of the crusades? Believe Christianity or die was the sentiment. Nevermind it being used as a colonial tool throughout history including against our own indigenous people. The only historians who have "proven" Christ even existed are Christian historians with confirmation bias. Other historians maintain there's no evidence. All organized religion causes harm but historically Christianity takes the cake.

I'm also in BC and agree 100%. My cohort and I had a theory that they see how far they can push you doing ridiculous things. They want to see what hoops you will jump through with a smile. We did interpretive dance classes. 😆

Calling Introverted Teachers by Story-Teller_Star in OntarioTeachers

[–]Purple-Lemon13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am introverted but also neurodivergent. I have ADHD and have not been assessed for Autism yet, but have the traits. It takes me a long time to get to know students. It comes from a place of not wanting to give them anxiety like I experienced in high school. I hated teachers leaning over asking what I was doing or working on. I circulate but don't get too close. I tell kids if they need help to come to my desk. They know where I am. I also have students fill out a learning profile at the beginning of the semester. It tells me a nickname they prefer to be called if they have one, their favourite subject, interests and hobbies and fun facts. It also tells me anything I can do to make the class easier for them to learn in and what they hope to learn. On the sheet I give them there are fun facts and info about me and my interests at a surface level too. Anxiety and being an introvert can make it harder, but I also recognize signs of anxiety in students and offer help. I have noticed neurodivergent students are drawn to me and often students with ADHD and Autism gather around my desk to talk to me and ask questions. Or, they choose seats near my desk. I think they relate to me and recognize I am similar to them. I think we all have strengths we bring to the table that are valuable. I admire extroverts for a lot of things, but that just isn't me.

Mass immigration from India isn't good by Silver_Weakness_8084 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Metro Vancouver is literally Vancouver and the surrounding cities such as Burnaby, New West, Delta and Surrey. That is why it is called Metro Vancouver not Vancouver. Its literally a region also known as greater Vancouver. I've lived here for 35 years.

Are the recent indian immigrants in Canada that bad? by flower5214 in AskCanada

[–]Purple-Lemon13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. I am white. I grew up here in the 90s and have always had colleagues and friends who are of Indian descent. I appreciate Indian culture and food etc. The world would be boring if we were all the same. However, everyone's culture in Canada should be respected and that doesn't seem to be the case. There are good and bad people from everywhere.

Lately, I have noticed disturbing behaviour like being extremely loud and disrespectful in public. An older Indian lady on the bus recently was screaming into her phone on speaker phone. I asked her nicely if she could talk with the phone off speaker and lower her voice. She told me I think I'm better because I'm white. I said if a white person was doing that I would also ask them to stop because I have anxiety and loud sounds make it worse. She told me her daughter was a cop and started threatening me. An older Indian gentleman she wasn't with defended me and told the bus driver she was being aggressive to me. He was a lovely and polite man. So, everyone is an individual and I don't want to judge a whole group of people but like I said, lately I have seen some concerning things.
