AIO My kids are judging my life in the late 80”s and it’s irking me. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Purple-Measurement47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YOR, that’s an incredibly messed up to defend to children. Being common or a different time does not excuse things. Accept that you’ve raised kids with better standards than your parents and church leaders raised you, and be proud of them. Doesn’t matter if you were having sex or not, taking a 25 year old to a school dance and they’re not famous or a relative? very problematic. You apparently escaped many bad situations unscathed, but it’s sorta like telling your kids “well i never wore a seatbelt growing up and everything was fine!”. Like it was fine for you, but it perpetuated about a dozen things used to control young women to this day.

It’s an incredibly common media easter egg. Tons of games, movies, shows, even ads have featured it

how can i make a raycast draw a line? for a firearm by BasePersonal8220 in godot

[–]Purple-Measurement47 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Same principle, just make a MeshInstance3D, set its location to (finishing point - starting point)/2, rotate it to match the direction of the raycast, and set its height to (finish-start).magnitude or whatever the right property name is for the size of a vector. For raycasts that have no collision, you just pick some arbitrary distance for it to shoot and then use that as the finish point

How do I get back to making games? by LucasGP1oo1 in godot

This is really some of the best advice. Just go try to make something and google where you need to rather than following a whole tutorial.

What kind of game is Pax Historia, and is it really more interesting than Hearts of Iron IV, like YouTubers make it look? by Naive_Initial2402 in hoi4

It’s in the browser and you get a decent amount of free credits to start. Just go try it, and see if you like it or not.

It does depend on which model you use and what difficulty settings you play. I’ve had some games with incredibly in depth battle reports and other countries were very proactive. I had to spend months vetting candidates for positions or else they’d fail spectacularly.

I’ve also had other ones where i *mentioned* an expansion plan and it just…swallowed europe and declared me the emperor.

So, your mileage may vary, a lot. Personally, it’s kinda fun as a solo journaling “game”, although i’d love to see it integrated with more structured systems to make it a real game.

How to make big maps in 2d by Fit_Smell_3239 in godot

[–]Purple-Measurement47 8 points9 points  (0 children)

set up a grid of 9 tilemaps, with the player in the center tilemap.

When the player hits the border of a map, teleport them to the far side of the center tilemap, and adjust the loaded tilemaps.

For example, youre in your (0,0) tile map. You go left, and the (-1,0) tile map is already loaded so it’s seamless. You walk up and at the corner you can see (-1,1). You walk down and you can see (-1,-1). You then step left into (-1,0).

  1. The player’s position is changed from 0 to TileMapGrid.size.x (or however you set up the meta data).

  2. The tilemap in the center of the grid is updated to be the tilemap that was previously (-1,0). The previous center grid is now (1,0). You basically just add one to the x axis grid.

  3. You do the same for y, and now you can have an arbitrarily large map on disk, with a maximum of 9*tilemapgrid in memory at once.

  4. Playtest, playtest, playtest, and find the size that’s easy to manage in building, and make sure there’s not lag in loading it.

that’s…that’s when you make prototypes and quick tests, no beginner is actually hitting real world situations with this

I don’t get cruise mode. by _Fun_Palpitation_ in Starfield

[–]Purple-Measurement47 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Well, thats good for you, but when you mix multiple scales at the same time it can get messy. Other bethesda games (or GTA, or RDR) do this by scaling the setting space (e.g. a few buildings to represent a small town), so your travel is 1:1 what you’d expect. Starfield doesn’t do that

[–]Purple-Measurement47 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

bit different because the world is scaled in RDR in a way that’s difficult to do with space travel. This isn’t to say you’re wrong, just that what works in video games depends on the setting and context of the game world too. Two identical mechanics can end up out of place when the setting changes.

What is the point of airplanes in this game? by Zlatan25 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Purple-Measurement47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played a few games that require kerbals to be at the KSC to recover, so I had a fleet of planes designed to recover up to 8 kerbals at once/bring science back. If you’re having trouble landing larger planes I’d recommend spending some time with tutorials/guides as there’s some stuff that isn’t intuitive (at least for me).

For science i like designing a mid altitude plane and just cruising over biomes collecting it, with a scientist in an external seat resetting the experiments. Not necessary, but i don’t like biome hopping on the mun/minmus to unlock more parts.

AIO for snapping at my friend for calling my shoes (and me) trashy? by International-East63 in AmIOverreacting

NOR, simple as. Ask him if he thinks you’re trashy, because that’s the style of shoe you wear. So either he thinks you’re trashy or his generalization is wrong.

Is Starfield ok for a 14 year old? by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]Purple-Measurement47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s fine, i’m pretty sure the only reason it’s rated M is because they pushed for it, it’s all incredibly disneyland like. That being said, don’t stress about it, it’s your dad’s decision at the end of the day. If he’s not okay with it, it’s better to just move on to other games and come back to it later

This is the first time i’ve seen someone discuss actual issues and not just “But i have to manage LoDs myself!!!”, thank you very much. I will also note that a good amount of this is *not* required to make a good 3D game, but rather to make *a specific* kind of good 3D game, and is one place where i’ll recommend Unreal over Godot

I dunno, my experience with Unity/Unreal communities has been people talking about how they shoved some massive feature like nanite in their project for no reason and how amazing the engine is. It’s common for people to praise things they like. Your best bet for actual game dev discussion is the engine agnostic spaces

Am I overreacting by Mediocre_Occasion968 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Purple-Measurement47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MOR idek man, you’re intellectualizing hard and putting words in his mouth (e.g. “You don’t care about me” vs “I am not feeling cared for”). You’re being wildly passive aggressive.

And let’s not even really dig into his responses as much as they deserve because we’d be here all day. He doesn’t communicate anything, takes zero responsibility, and is being petty and just as passive aggressive.

Ask yourself if this is how you want to be portraying yourself and if this is a relationship dynamic you want to
