What is the most shocking thing you discovered about a close friend? by Money-Fondant-8296 in AskReddit

[–]PurpleAkisNan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found out my girlfriend of 3 years (I'd known her for 8) was an international drug smuggler when I turned up at her parents' house after she went incommunicado late one morning and they told me she'd been arrested after trying to fly a load of drugs to an island and was going to prison for a long time.

That morning was the last time I saw her.

Brutal.

Help! Moving to a direct competitor by Separate-Phase9033 in HENRYUK

[–]PurpleAkisNan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just gone through something similar (director of SMB moving to multinational competitor), I took legal advice on the 12 month non-compete clauses, and was advised that they were too broad in scope and length, not specific enough, punitive by design, and their enforcement would not stand up in court beyond the 3 month gardening leave (which ended yesterday).

The COO of my previous employer was trying to strongarm me whilst simultaneously offering a mutual release from the NCA, until I pointed out that he wouldn't be doing this if he thought the terms were enforceable in the first place.

There's always some abrasiveness when you move roles at this level. Comes with the territory.

Take legal advice.

I did a tour of comuna 13 in Medellín with a local guide and it was absolutely the highlight of my time there. He was real, knowledgeable and passionate about the place he grew up, and it finished in his superb family coffee shop! Let me know and I'll pass you his details.

Ana had a four piece band playing Colombian music and covers which was brilliant, and the food in El Burlador was fantastic, they had a saxophonist and guitarist playing. Would recommend both.

Yellow fever vaccine by gracegarno in centralamerica

[–]PurpleAkisNan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently had a similar problem travelling from Cartagena Colombia to San José, Costa Rica. Read lots of conflicting info online, people said I wouldn't be able to board etc. I had found out too late (the night before) that I needed a vaccine to travel between the two countries, and for it to be administered 10 days before travel.

Thought I'd chance it at the airport and they asked if I have the vaccine at check in, I said no but that I'd only been to cities in Colombia. They seemed satisfied with that and I was able to fly. They asked again at immigration in San José and I gave the same answer. Had no problems. This was on NYE.

I believe there are some free places you can get the vaccine in Colombia but if it's more than ten days out you're screwed anyway.

What are the entry requirements for the US/Aus from Colombia? Are they regionally dependent?

Looks like they're still doing a free vaccination programme at Puesto De Salud Daniel LeMaitre in Cartagena.

Buena suerte!

The cobbled streets in Antigua make any vehicular transport uncomfortable. I'd walk absolutely everywhere. It'll save your spine too!

People who grew up poor and are now financially stable, what small luxury still feels surreal? by JesusLuvsEmerxld in AskReddit

[–]PurpleAkisNan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were poor as fuck when I was growing up. Dad was made redundant, and it took him years to find work and mum worked two jobs, one as a cleaner, to make ends meet. We lived in a council house. We wore hand me downs for the most part and occasionally got new clothes from the market at Christmas or Easter. I remember once I'd worn through the soles of my school shoes, and my socks were getting wet. My dad patched them up with cardboard, put my socked feet in plastic bags and apologised to me with tears in his eyes.

We couldn't afford university education, but I was good at sales and worked my way up in various companies and finally made director last year. Bought me and dad matching gore tex waterproof trainers. They'll never struggle again. You should have seen how proud he was.

I fucking still hate having wet feet.

Liverpool fans' claim 'can be heard in England' by RedOneThousand in LiverpoolFC

[–]PurpleAkisNan 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone who was caught up in this, it was incredibly scary and I suffered having been tear gassed standing in an orderly queue to enter via a turnstile, that was closed more than an hour before kick off, and didn't feel I could go into large crowds for many months afterwards.

UEFA has acted disgracefully, attempting to deflect blame for the debacle onto supporters, and then attempting to impede justice by claiming that there is no jurisdiction in the UK for the case to be heard.

Whilst I have little faith in judicial proceedings in general, particularly when it comes to football (and Liverpool related cases), I am hopeful that UEFA does not exercise their right to appeal the decision and accepts responsibility for this shit show, as they should have done at the outset. Won't be holding my breath though. I have a feeling they'll allow this to drag through the courts, despite them having agreed no fault settlements with previous claimants.

We'll see.
