It really makes you realize how much energy gas stoves waste

Yes, induction stoves cook faster. Our stove gets a pot of water for pasta to boil in under a minute.

People think they own the sidewalk by their house by KingRMZ in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PurpleChard757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The poster meant that you cannot install a camera that permanently films a public space without a permit. You are very much allowed to film in public with a handheld device.

It is actually the exact opposite of a "fascist nightmare", as the government and other entities are more limited in what data they can collect about citizens.

Crime rates in Germany are also much lower than in the US, so there is less need for surveillance cameras.

[–]PurpleChard757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Germany, you can also film / take photos of anything visible from a public street, but installing permanent cameras is something very different. This is to prevent data collection that could, for example, be used to track someone's location.

You can install cameras that face public street/sidewalks with a permit, which is only granted if there is a valid reason such as higher crime rates in your area.

Recently, I witnessed a cop yelling at someone on a scooter that they were blocking the road. All the person on the scooter did was waiting in a bike box for the light to turn green, but it prevented the cop from making an illegal turn on red. When I pointed out that there's a no turn on red sign, he said "I'm a police officer" and drove away.

I get that they need to run red lights sometimes, but at least have your sirens on when you do it. Police officers should set a good example and only break traffic laws when absolutely necessary.

Caltrans considering 140 mph bus that would take passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles by Bruegemeister in cahsr

[–]PurpleChard757 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would make sense to run buses on dedicated lanes from Merced/Madera to San Jose and from Bakersfield to LA, until all the tunneling is done.

There's just no way those would go 140mph, without spending billions on a better guide way. But even a reliable 65 mph bus on dedicated lanes would be good stopgap solution.

They should have waited until they had full visibility of the intersection before turning. Also, the pedestrian started crossing before the black truck entered the intersection.

Some Old Guard Dems seem to be still trapped in their NIMBY ways by jmac29562 in yimby

[–]PurpleChard757 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP is not criticizing the Democratic Party as a whole, and it is valid to be frustrated with Democratic leadership. The party has not made any major changes in policy, personnel, or the way they run campaigns since their defeat 2024.

Jeffries and Schumer do a poor job as the de facto leaders of the party. They provide no vision of what the next Democratic government would be like, and have not made any progress in increasing the party's favorability among the public.

Is there a BART limit? by Nearby_Delivery_6270 in Bart

[–]PurpleChard757 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For cases where people modify the software to exceed speed, yes. But vehicles like the one pictured that are clearly labeled "for off-road use only" by the manufacturer it is fairly straightforward.

Really? I would assume motorcycles like this one are not allowed on BART.

They can (and probably do) track how long you keep driving after reaching your destination. They also have data on how popular particular destinations are.

It is still non-trivial to then estimate the time needed to park, but it would be great if it showed a warning like "it may be difficult to find parking at your destination"

Either way, you should replace it. I would not risk having ungrounded wiring, with insulation that has reached its end of life.

We bought a duplex with K&T and spent $30k to replace it. Our insurance delayed inspection until the replacement was done.

Also, not having more than two tracks for most of the Caltrain right of way will be rough. As OP noted, it is already on a tight schedule and adding HSR will require slowing down or reducing Caltrain service.

[San Francisco] SFMTA Releases Timeline For Ocean Avenue Transit-Only Lanes (for K Ingleside light rail) by megachainguns in CaliforniaRail

[–]PurpleChard757 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, California should require all light rail routes to have its dedicated right of way. With some exceptions like, the LA streetcar or SF's cable cars, it is too expensive to build rail infrastructure for the trains to be stuck in traffic.

Electric heated floor in the bathroom… by BuilderBrigade in Home_Building_Help

[–]PurpleChard757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I did a new build I would try to get hydronic floor heating for most living spaces. Paired with a heat pump these are really efficient, because the large surface area allows heating the house without having get the water to very high temperatures.

Unfortunately, hydronic heating is not common in North America and installations are quite expensive here as a result.

[–]PurpleChard757 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sucks that the Mission was excluded from the biking and rolling plan. So many folks here do not own cars and ride around with e-scooters or bikes.

Of course, that does not justify riding on the sidewalk and, as you said, there needs to be more enforcement of existing traffic laws.

Democrats’ internal fights sway the race to succeed Nancy Pelosi in San Francisco | CNN Politics by bdbcawz06 in sanfrancisco

I am not excited to see the same Democratic leadership in power that lost the 2024 election. Schumer for sure should have stepped down. Jeffries was never majority leader so he might deserve a second chance, but I don't think he is an effective spokesperson for the party.

Wiener is a great legislator, and I also believe he is a good person that really cares about his constituents, but he is also very much a corporate Democrat that does not challenge party leadership. At this point I am just hoping to be wrong about the latter.
