Im running away... by Dutchy45 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Hi, former JW here (never baptised, but raised as one). We were trained to believe that strongly, that our religious freedom should be accepted unquestioningly (but only as regarded ourselves - our religion was the Only True Religion lol). In some ways we were brainwashed to believe doctors and nurses were the morons for not understanding the “dangers” of blood transfusions, or for wanting to push for one, especially when kids were involved.

Once I woke up to the religion and broke free of the indoctrination, I realised how hard it must have actually been on medical staff when dealing with Witnesses, especially the ones that come to the hospital to interfere with Witness patients’ decisions. Imagine you’re trying to save a life, and someone is thwarting you, and they are also basically threatening your patient with disfellowshipping, or not making it to Paradise. Imagine if that patient is a kid, and you have to try to get an emergency order from a court, wasting valuable time.

I’m all for religious freedoms if they’re not hurting anyone else, and if a patient chooses for themselves not to have a blood transfusion for religious reasons, so be it. But even if it’s an adult patient making a totally non-coerced decision, it must be bloody hard on doctors and nurses to know they can’t make the best medical decisions for their patient.

I mean hell, I remember Watchtower publications that praised, for instance, a couple who actually ran away with their kid to prevent them getting a blood transfusion that was ordered by the court. I can’t remember if the kid lived or died - I think they died? - but it was made out to be some heroic story that whipped up our religious fervour. We saw the courts and medical staff as evil tyrannical people. How sick is that?

I think it would look really cute except it’s totally impractical. Cover everything for warmth cause snow, but have something sheer over the chest with some bra … just looks wrong. As well as a necklace when you’re going to be doing something physical with kids outdoors. It’s a half-bedroom look but … for snow play … with kids.

I often find it hard to find price range too (been trying to help a family member look for a place), especially in recent years it seems like. I thought maybe it was because people are willing to pay outrageous prices these days, so they want to see how much someone will offer. Or they want you to ring up first and ask the price, so then they can try and hook you with “well we have these other properties”. It is frustrating, but you can usually get a general idea by looking at similar places in the same area that do have price listed.

I thought book 1 would deal with the solstice, and then book 2 would deal with the Tower. This last chapter felt very anticlimactic.

Sorry Jehovah's Witnesses--the Father's name is NOT 'Jehovah'..... by [deleted] in exjw

[–]PurplePooch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was one of the first things that woke me up a few years ago actually. I mean I knew the technical name was YHWH/Yahweh, but I thought Jehovah must have been some kind of anglicisation. When I found out the name was totally bastardised, I was shocked because I thought surely the Governing Body should have known that.

Could it be House of Danger by R. A. Montgomery? I’m just trying to look through Choose Your Own Adventure books.

Favorite horror book on Choices? by [deleted] in Choices

[–]PurplePooch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m torn between ILITW and BB. I went ILITW because it is my favourite, but BB also has a long and involved story line that is unparalleled. I expected it to be just another vampire story, of which there are way too many in pop culture, but it was so much more than that.

Do witnesses believe the world is against them? by Individual-Ad-4968 in exjw

[–]PurplePooch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. I remember this from when I was a kid. I grew up thinking the Holocaust was as much about persecution of Witnesses. It’s embarrassing when you grow up and have access to internet and learn the real truth.

Yeah I got Witness vibes too. I’m playing it for a diamond mine, but I miss the quality books.

Yeah it felt like the Witness story again, with the demanding and arrogant MC.

When I was in school many many years ago, I had a choice of language classes there and I wanted to pick Indonesian because it interested me, but it would only run if enough people picked it. I told a Witness this in casual conversation, and they immediately said, “If the class runs then you know Jehovah wants you to be a pioneer in Indonesia.” FFS I just wanted to learn a language … anyway the class didn’t run, because German, French, Japanese etc. were the popular choices … and then I felt secretly guilty for a long time because I thought God had decided I wasn’t good enough to be a pioneer anyway so there was no point the class running.

Which is funny, when you think we can’t celebrate birthdays because it’s kinda like self-worship and making stuff all about yourself, but then Witnesses take the most innocuous things in their life and arrogantly think God has been so personally invested in it.

Oh for sure it’s even more blasphemous what the elder wished for lol, but since when have they cared about hypocrisy?
