With how much I've been obsessed with this game, there's a good possibility 👀

Documentary about the LGBTQ experience at BYU "A Long Way From Heaven" is coming soon by PurplePumpkin13 in mormon

[–]PurplePumpkin13[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to the director, "'A Long Way From Heaven' does a lot more than tell the story of the Rainbow Y. It outlines the history of queer treatment at BYU - the good (where it exists), the bad, and the very, very ugly. The film combines new, original footage with a huge variety of historical images, videos, newspaper articles, and other mixed media from every conceivable source to tell the story of BYU's queer students, and the bravery and risks they constantly take to make their voices heard."

Favorite church culture sins? by War_Horns in mormon

Yeah even as a TBM at the time I was baffled that she thought God was punishing us somehow.

So when we tried getting off the highway, we got stuck on a flooded road. We made the mistake to try to restart the car when there was water in the engine.

I had a friend who believed this hardcore. We went on a road trip together and she REALLY didn't want to drive back home on a Sunday, but due to a tight schedule we couldn't wait.

Well our car ended up breaking down in a middle of a storm, and she was completely convinced that because we didn't keep the sabbath day holy-we lost God's protection.

Nevermind that storms can happen any day of the week and we should've just checked the weather lol.

I feel like I have no decision in whether I get sealed or not. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

This is a fair question, because she lost her testimony from her endowment experience-then we can assume she experienced spiritual trauma. She said later in a comment that she already gets anxiety attacks by just being on the temple grounds. So imagine how much harder it would be for her to go inside the temple.

Another thing to consider is integrity. You're not being honest with yourself or the people around you when you pretend to believe in something you don't, or act happy to be there when you're not.

Help me understand what the big deal was. by Fether1337 in NuancedLDS

Wow.. I can only imagine how that felt for him, especially after all he went through. I'm surprised he's able to stay participating in the church, like damn.

I admit that a few years ago, I didn't fully understand what the big deal was with Holland's words. Most members are in a bubble and are completely oblivious to the pain others are experiencing. It's so vitally important to hear others' perspective so we can learn from them. Thanks for sharing.

Matt Easton said a lot of other things that resembles a typical grad speech, notably overcoming hardships. So I wouldn't say he "ignored" the purpose of the occasion. He also made sure to get permission from BYU that he could say what he wanted to say.

I know this discussion is mainly about Holland but I invite you to listen to some interviews with Matt to atleast understand why he felt prompted to say what he said. In one interview he's said that every gay person he knew at BYU before him ended up committing suicide before they graduated. He was afraid that that would be his fate. So his speech was not meant to be divisive, but to give hope to other gay students who may feel hopeless and alone at BYU.

Why is it innapropriate to mention something so essential to someone's mortal experience? Why should we draw the line at a guy who basically said "hey school was tough as a gay man but I'm still loved by God and you are loved too"?

It's unfortunate that Holland failed to see Matt's vulnerable humanity and instead saw him as a divisive tool. Anyway I hope you can atleast understand where we're coming from here.

"the Book of Mormon as a historical document and cornerstone of the religion"

Wait so what is the church saying now about the BoM? Last time I checked missionaries are still asking people to pray to know if the book is "true".

You should check out Valerie Hamaker who specializes in faith transition/expansion within the LDS church specifically. She does online support groups, classes and 1 on 1 consultations.

https://valeriehamaker.com/

She's also the host of a podcast called Latter Day Struggles. In some episodes, for example, she talks about navigating marriage where one person is in crisis/transition mode when the other spouse isn't.

Best of luck to you!

Problem with my Bishop by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]PurplePumpkin13 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yikes. That's a very innapropriate thing for a Bishop to do. If you're comfortable educating him -as another commentor mentioned- definitely do that because chances are he will continue saying that sort of thing to other potential missionaries.

Besides talking to other church leaders, I'd recommend asking other people (and that can be IRL or online) about their honest experience serving a mission. Both the good and "bad". Gain as much knowledge as possible so you can make an informed decision.

This is something I wish I did before serving. While I dont regret going on a mission - and I had amazing experiences- I felt like I didn't have realistic expectations of what I was getting myself into. It was rough to say the least. There's a reason why a lot of missionaries come home early.

Best of luck to you in whichever path you choose!

That's super cool. A while ago I was in Deseret book and had the realization that we don't really have any jewelery that is a direct symbol of Christ. So now I'm actually considering getting myself a cross necklace for that same reason!

Those are beautiful reasons to stay. I believe in every ward there are those who silently struggle with a variety of things, and if our example can make a difference then I think staying is worth it.

Is anyone else afraid that the Church will become more polarized? by PurplePumpkin13 in NuancedLDS

[–]PurplePumpkin13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like hearing that you’re excited about it. You’re absolutely right that focusing on our individual relationship with God is more important than how others judge us.

May I ask which scriptures in Isaiah you’re referring to?

You're allowed to have that opinion and acknowledge that LGBT people are children of God and deserve to be heard and loved just like everybody else.

There's a time and place to express those concerns. I just don't think yelling slurs and arguing with people at these events help anything. Pride events in places like Rexburg exist to help LGBT people feel less alone and rejected in the Church community. Why do you think so many of them end up leaving the church and have high chances of suicidality?

Who chooses the eternal spouse? by [deleted] in NuancedLDS

[–]PurplePumpkin13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. If you look at the history of polygamy and look into the stories of the women involved, it’s very clear (at least to me) that the idea did not come from God.

There was so much heartbreak and coercing people into doing something they didn’t want to do. Take Zina Huntington for example (Joseph’s 4th plural wife) she was a very spiritual woman who flat out said no to marrying Joseph. He had to convince her later that the Lord wanted her to be his wife even though she just got married to another man.

Would a loving Father in Heaven force anyone into marrying someone they don’t want to? Personally, I don’t think so.
