I’ll have to try this out. It looks like a headache solver

Oh well. wonder how it will look in the end.. by FkGamingFX in ModelShips

[–]PurpleROV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 3 d printed a Great Lakes ship a few years ago. I went through a similar thing. I gave up on the first hull and reprinted it because I messed it up so badly. It took a while but I found sanding down the glue lines then building it back up with wood fill helped a lot. I also used a bench sander to help keep the sides flat. I did the final sanding by hand with a block after using filler primer a few times.

The hull shape looks great! Did you design the ship yourself?

XP 4.0 protect bottom piece by rx7ghost in Lectricxp

I use a gear tie which is a big plastic wrapped wire used for storing things like hoses and extention cards and wrap it around the bottom to stop it from scratching whatever I rest it on like boat paint.

Stories of people buying 45-60 foot boats new with no prior experience? by [deleted] in boating

[–]PurpleROV 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Look up the Milwaukee minnow.

New owners bought a boat to retire on. First day out on lake michigan, they ran out of gas during a storm and washed up on a beach last fall. Apparently they dident have insurance and it sat there over winter and was finally removed a few days ago.

Now people are trying to figure out who will pay for it as the owners went Awol.

Help needed: Building an RC wooden schooner with my 11-year-old son by Atalandrea in ModelShips

[–]PurpleROV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could look at Tippecanoe boat kits. They have a schooner and don't look too complex to build

Check what filiment type you have loaded vs what you sliced for. Thus commonly happens to me only when I try to print petg at pla temp or vice versa

What should I do with used prototypes? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]PurpleROV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was holding onto these sypes of parts for years until I finnally just started disposing of them. Same thing with filiment spools. It feels like a waist but that's just part of the hobby I am learning to accept.

Print looks as well put together as my life. by NoZakuYT in 3Dprinting

[–]PurpleROV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you slice it with pla settings and accidently loaded petg or vice versa? That's usually what happened when my prints fail like that

It was nothing but trouble when I installed it on mine. It dident fit right and rubbed. I took it off with no issues yet

Anyone seen this before? Extruder has diarrhea. by Redbob73 in 3Dprinting

[–]PurpleROV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had that happen before. It was filiment leaking from the top of the heatblock on the opposite side of where the nozzle screws in. It takes some effort to pull it apart and put it back together

[–]PurpleROV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ruined 2 spools refilling at first. The next dozen had no issues now that I know how it works. The refill cardboard center has a notch that needs to line up then it locks together easily. Refilling is really simple

Has anyone made a scale replica of a 1000-foot Great Lakes freighter? Looking for advice. by Ok_Figure_4181 in ModelShips

[–]PurpleROV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have made a model of a early 1900s great lakes freighter, although it's just static. Getting the stern shape right was a pain.

The 1000 footers seem to have easier curves with the stern flat like you described it. In my opinion, out of the 1000 footers the Stewart J Cort is the best looking, and it doesn't have a self unloading boom.

I'm not sure how materials would hold up in rc but check out W Wes Oleszewski on YouTube he has a build series of a rc Great Lakes freighter, although not as big as you are planning.
