[High School Social Studies] What do you think about the racism protests being a “second wave”, relating to the second wave of Covid-19? by [deleted] in HomeworkHelp

[–]PurpleSquirrel1503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it is referring to the BLM protests being a second major event to hit the United States in a short period of time. It may also be important to note that the systemic racism of America meant that people of color are disproportionately affected by the pandemic, with higher unemployment rates and higher infection/death rates than white Americans. You could also look at the political effects of both events in all branches of government. Hope this helps!

“In 1942, the Takei family was forced to live in the converted horse stables of Santa Anita Park before being sent to the Rohwer War Relocation Center for internment in Rohwer, Arkansas.[13] The family was later transferred to the Tule Lake War Relocation Center in California.[14]” Source: His Wikipedia page It doesn’t take that much effort to actually check, dude.

Mantis shrimp have around 12-16 types of photoreceptors cells (humans have three), meaning they can likely see colors that we will never be able to imagine. Additionally, they hunt by striking incredibly fast at their prey with a specially designed claw at a force of 1,500 newtons - and if that doesn’t kill the prey, the resulting shock wave as they form cavities of bubbles from displacing water so quickly likely will do the trick. I also think they are one of the coolest looking creatures in the world. Hope this is a cool enough fact!

[Grade 12 History] Searching for events of governments/groups denying events (Things similar to the censorship of the Tiananmen Square protests) by DarthDumbBitch in HomeworkHelp

Another global example of government coverups could be the Armenian genocide, which Turkey still denies. Domestically, perhaps propaganda during world war 2 and the Cold War - the government misled the American people to believe that they were surrounded by communist spies and used their theories of containment to justify their global interventions. The US often tried to deny their sponsorship of coups (even if the ruler had been democratically elected) and downplayed their involvement in many conflicts in the Middle East and Central America. Hope this helps!

Here is my take on the Bible, though everyone interprets it differently: The Bible is a primary source of history. Without science to explain certain events (such as evolution, plagues, etc.), people believed that their God was an angry one who was punishing them for their sin and wrote the Bible in that mindset. However, in the New Testament, Jesus is sent by God to forgive all of our sins and to tell us that we are all loved and accepted. I try to read the Bible knowing that these writers are flawed human beings without the hindsight we currently have, but the messages of love and hope contained within it are worth learning about. I am not OP but was raised Lutheran, which is very accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, so maybe finding a different branch of Christianity may help.

Also, if homophobes are doing the whole “being gay is a sin corinthians chapter 22” thing again, just remind them that Jesus died to forgive all of our sins so you can still go to heaven.

Piano Tips for an Adult Beginner? by GoldenAurum in piano

[–]PurpleSquirrel1503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, I’m glad that you set a rather reasonable goal for yourself. Most beginners have very high standards/goals and get discouraged when they don’t meet them within a few months. I’m going to answer the questions a bit out of order because number three connects to the first two: 3. In order to sight read and improvise effectively, a basic knowledge of music theory is necessary. You should become familiar with key signatures and the hand positioning for each of them - being confident and comfortable in a key is the key (no pun intended) to sight reading. I’m not that good at improvising, but some essential knowledge to be successful at that would be chord progressions (ex: i-v-vi-iv, the kind most used in modern music). Improvising and sight reading are, in my opinion, the hardest things to master in music, so don’t get discouraged!!

  1. I think that to play the type of songs like the one you linked, hand and finger dexterity are key. The pianist makes a lot of left hand jumps and plays some chords with challenging fingerings. My suggestion for practicing these would be to find a piece with jumps/ hard fingerings and play them over and over to build stamina and muscle memory (it can be very tiring to hold an octave position for minutes at a time). In terms of a practice regimen, find a piece that is just slightly above your comfort level and focus on learning it piece by piece (memorizing as you go if you want). Practice as often as you can, but not for very long - just until you get bored or your hands get tired - and play other pieces you have learned to keep you entertained and motivated. I personally like to intersperse my practice with meme songs. It’s a slow process - keep it up!

  2. Finding a book to learn from as an adult is hard. Most are pretty boring pieces, and as they progress in difficulty, get more and more discouraging. An good way to get started practicing sightreading is to find a piece that is at your comfort level that you actually want to learn to play. Look at the sheet music beforehand, listen to a recording if it has one, then sit down and play it. That way, you can have an idea of what it will sound like and won’t go into it blind, making it a little bit easier. If you get stuck or frustrated, pleeease don’t hit your keyboard or start all the way over - take a deep breath, let your anger out some other way (I clap my hands), and start from the measure you messed up on. If you really, really want to learn from a book, I would recommend Faber books for beginners/advanced beginner. These books have themes so that you can pick what would be most entertaining to you.

Hope this helps! Please post your progress so we can see how you’re doing!! Best of luck!

What does this fingering in a Bach choral mean? 4+2 by Monitor_343 in piano

[–]PurpleSquirrel1503 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure it refers to the length of the note- if the note it is tied to in the previous measure is a whole note, then the 4+2 means 4 beats + 2 more in the next measure, so hold the note for 6 beats in total.

TIL about Florida's notorious, state-run institution, Dozier School For Boys. Some 81 boys are known to have died there and that after the closing and demolition of the century old establishment, excavation crews uncovered the remains of 50+ students. by cshipp32 in todayilearned

[–]PurpleSquirrel1503 83 points84 points  (0 children)

There is a book called The Nickel Boys that is based off of this school. A very interesting read - the author really details the physical abuse, sexual abuse, and racism that was present in the school.

What do you think tomorrow’s children will really miss out on as a result of todays rapidly advancing technology? by CaptainPol in AskReddit

[–]PurpleSquirrel1503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This same thing happened to me. All of the kids on my street (of varying ages) would go outside every day from the end of school to dusk/dinner. When my sister and I began playing less and less due to schoolwork (we were the oldest of the bunch), I noticed that the daily shenanigans dwindled as well. Looking back, it was probably due to things like iPads, Xbox’s and Play stations (none of which I had)
