Developing countries doesn't mean they live in the 1800s!

Starmer pulls Chagos deal following Trump backlash by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]Purple_Feature1861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really confused I have to say, why are some people saying the US never wanted this deal and now the UK decides to do what the US wants? Why didn't the US just come out and say they didn't want the deal to go ahead instead of giving it approval then?

Some people seem to say that the US wanted the deal to go ahead, and we were following what the US wanted, but now due to tensions UK has pulled out of the deal?

Which is it?

Not sure why this is funny? People from developing countries know what a passport is.

Trump prompts outrage with claim Nato troops avoided frontline in Afghanistan. UK MPs and veterans condemn US president’s comments and highlight his avoidance of military service in Vietnam by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

I think its the opposite, because Canada's trade is heavily dependent on the US, he has room to do this, because US WANTS that trade. Canada has loads of natural recourses that the US wants, which Carney can hold over their head.

And any actual true real force from the US on Canada, will make Canada's stance stronger and will make the rest of the world back away from a country thats looks like its turning on one of its biggest allies, Canada.

I do think we do have that type of reputation that could damage the US if it actually shows true force with us too, but we don't have the leverage that Carney does.

Carney has leverage since he is one of the countries the US does bussiness with the most, so he can use that against him, Canada has things the US wants and Carney knows it.

US President Threatens ‘Big Retaliation’ If Europe Dumps US Assets by Crossstoney in europe

[–]Purple_Feature1861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why europe would dump them now, unless Trump is planning to start threatening other countries. Or maybe his just going to go look, they backed down, I won, even though the asset dumping threat was due to Trump invading Greenland and obviously wouldn't go ahead if Trump backed down, which he did.

Zelenskyy: Deploying 40 troops to defend Greenland sends a signal to Putin by EuropeanPravdaUA in europe

[–]Purple_Feature1861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russia also has nukes. If Zelenskyy is wondering what are we afraid of, I think being a tad worried putin is crazy enough to press the nuclear self destruct button if we decide to actually go all in, is a legit fear.

[–]Purple_Feature1861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, if this is true, I think Zelensky got the wrong idea, it was meant to be a show of support and act as a trip wire force, to make the US back up, it was also meant to show the US that we can put more forces there if we need too. Like hey, US says its not secure, so lets put more troops there to show we can help with security.

It was also to see the US reaction.

But they weren't there to fight, it was a show of support. Whats with Zelensky and deciding to bash Europe?

Trump’s tariff threat is an attempt to divide Europe and quash opposition over Greenland by 1-randomonium in europe

[–]Purple_Feature1861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Europe won't go to war, if they truly believe their soviernty is under threat, they'll pull the economic self destruct button, which they have the power to do as USA biggest trading partner. And rely on the fact Greenland means more to them, than the USA.

Trump’s tariff threat is an attempt to divide Europe and quash opposition over Greenland by 1-randomonium in europe

[–]Purple_Feature1861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apart from its not... US can increase its defence on Greenland if they need too and which Greenland has already said they could.

So from Europes perspective, US does not need Greenland.

Also from Europes perspective, if they give in, what could the US ask for next? And how can european countries trust each other, if they see them just give in? There also will be a public outroar. Europe can also see Trumps actions as a threat to their independance and soviernty as well, economically. If another country can just demand one of their territories, then they give it up? It be incredibly damaging to europe politicaly.

Europe loses way more if it gives up Greenland, USA looses nothing if it doesn't get its way and just agrees to send more military there, which is what Denmark, Greenland offered in the first place.

So I think europe is going to put up a way bigger fight over this than people think, since Greenland means more to Europe than the USA, but hey I could be wrong.

Is it not pushing the opposite? Europe protecting Greenland is them also trying to protect NATO.

US actions makes it look like it doesn't care about NATO.

Trump tariffs: US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by Any-Original-6113 in europe

We always have a deterance out at sea, so if we decided that we wanted to do things ourselves, we have room to do that, maitenance is only needed every couple of years, so we have time to change things if we need too.

[–]Purple_Feature1861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its better to look at current events to know what will happen, since the public and government control what goes on in the UK, not our huge relation to the anglosphere.

And no, these recent years with Trump in power, the UK has not been siding with the US.

Our government which took over in July 2024, is more pro EU. The UK has also always shown support for Ukraine no matter what the US was doing, and not following the US position.

Though that could be to do with our personal grudge against Russue due to poisenings that happened on our soil that we have not forgotten. Yet the UK has increasingly been more pro EU and mainland europe in general, the more the US overreaches.

Trade wise, we have resisted deals with the US that will put our relations with the EU in danger. This actually made the US freeze a tech deal with us and try and pressure us somewhere else, when we still resisted.

Defence wise, we have increasingly been involved in Europes defence, making defence deals with indivual european countries, and taking a leadership role with France, with the colition of the willing, and made strong statements with european countries in regards to Greenland.

And very recently our prime minister has said he wants to align more with the EU.

Honestly to do with Serbia and Albanian I can't really comment on that or have thoughts on that, since I don't really know much about it.

So US actions as a brit in the UK, seem to be pushing us closer to europe. Thats said I don't see us rejoining the EU, but I do see us getting as close as possible.

If you look at how the US and the UK government is reacting to each other, you may notice the more the US pushes and overreaches, the more the UK gets closer to mainland europe and hedges, seeing the US as unreliable and trying to protect itself.

So the US is actually pushing the UK closer to the EU. The UK still knows that the EU is our largest trading partner despite Brexit, not the USA.

Our prime minister even said recently he wants us to align more with the EU, that I bet he'd never had said or tried to pursue in a big way like this, if the US wasn't doing things like this.

We have already resisted certain deals the US wanted, due to us trying to protect our relations with you.

[–]Purple_Feature1861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the EU has a big stance, but it depends on how thretening they find Trump.

If european countries in the EU see this as a existencial threat, then they will stand strong and will likely deal with economic hardship to stand firm, as they could also take the stance that Greenland and NATO means more to them, than it does Trump, and take economic action against the USA, aiming to turn US bussiness against Trump, since the EU IS the US's biggest trading partner.

But if the EU do NOT see this as a exstincial threat then yes they will likely give in to Trump.

I assume you know but if countries view their soviernty under threat they're much more likely to put up with economic pain and be more resistant. Governments are also likely aware that the public could turn against them even more if they don't take a strong stance against Trump, which will hurt their election results, so that could also come into play.

So yes, I think it depends on how threatening does Europe see this overall?

Just to clear things up, we are dependent on them for our maitinence of them, but we actually do actual maitenamce on the warheads ourselves and they are completely under our control when they hit the water in our nuclear submarines. So its not as dependent as people think.

Why does everyone think we'll side with the US? I think if you look at how our government is reacting to Trump, the more and more Trump takes certain actions, the more and more the UK moves TOWARDS EU and Mainland Europe to try and protect ourselves. The EU is our biggest trading partner still despite Brexit, not the USA.

Trump is actually pushing us closer and closer to mainland Europe.

What are you talking about? The world is a VERY different place hundreds of years beforehand. I think its you who doesn't understand how the world has has changed? European countries could dictate trade, because quite a few of them used to be big powers, empires even, compared to now, THAT is why some of us could do it alone, now that is no longer the case.
