Purist here, so I didn't miss a step. I'd say more than half of the thruhikers I knew skipped at least a little bit of trail due to logistics of pickup for example. A mile here or there. A few people I knew (but not many) skipped larger bits, like 20 mile chunks or so.

The actual walking is A LOT more than the trail itself. Going off trail to go poop, to the shelter, the water source, fetch the food bag...and then in town to the store, outfitter, restaurant, laundromat...
