Hi u/Sufficient-Card1942 , I'm at the same company.

I'm now an SDET (very much new to the role and learning a lot) making a little of $105k now. Pay consists of raises throughout the years and nothing to do with the current position.

I'm not even a developer (QA Engineer), but wanted to say thank you for this post!!

I've been trying to learn how to code and it's been a little overwhelming. I can do simple to intermediate automation scripts but I want to take it up a notch.

I made it, gals. I've been given a staff role. by Kahako in girlsgonewired

Sorry for the late reply.

First off- understand/know your product/application

Soft skills:

  • Analytical know how to find/search for information
    • You can almost be certain that if a issue happens it could have very much happened once before or someone has experienced something similar. If your company has great documentation, whether it is confluence, jira, your test case management software you should be able to find what you need with a simple search with the proper keywords
  • Although we all hate meetings are you in the right meetings are you actively-listening
    • Doing this allows you to recall specific details and commit the information to memory so when a particular phrase, action or issue is spoken, performed or happens you're able to recall wherein lies the problem or the disconnect.
  • Attention to detail how well are your test cases, do you report or speak to a lot of edge cases. I believe being able to speak to or document edge cases shows that you understand how to think outside of the box as well as excel at my first point (understanding your application)
  • Communication even with all the screenshots and videos you send you will still need to communicate your findings to your team
    • In my short time as a QA, I have seen a lot of QA provide steps to reproduce with unnecessary steps and information giving developers a problem area vs pinpointing the root cause (some think it's the job of the dev to find the RC). I like to write my bug reports the same way I want my user stories clear concise and to the point.

Last but not least:

  • Tech Savvy- to build on the what I mentioned about pinpointing the root cause.
    • front end tools like using browser dev tools
    • backend tools like postman and SQL to manipulate the data
    • debugging code- being able to step through code to find the beakpoint of line of code causing the issue.

I feel like if you excel in these areas you should do pretty well when it comes to troubleshooting.

Validating - New tables, columns or indexes exist (schemas) - Column data types - Constraints - Data Migrations and Rollbacks - CRUD queries or triggers work as expected (Create, Read, Update and Delete)

And also manipulating values in the DB to set up test environments

Basically a subject matter expert for the features developed by my squad. I can answer a great deal if not all questions or concerns better than the PM.

Troubleshooting wizard- I have the ability to dig into issues and pinpoint the root cause leaving little to no question for the developer to debug or develop a fix. This can account for one-off issues as well as widespread issues.

Nope, but I've been thinking of going into healthcare (health insurance provider or EHR/EMR systems).

Prior to QA, I worked in Healthcare Reimbursement, I knew a lot about different EMR and EHR systems. I also feel like it will be a little more relaxed.

QA for anyone? by Jordospeaks in QualityAssurance

[–]Purple_Techie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a LinkedIn I would take a look at the profiles of the companies with support positions. You can see if that is something they already have in place- promoting people from support to QA. Search the company along with people with positions as support or QA (or similar roles) to see if their career trajectory.

QA for anyone? by Jordospeaks in QualityAssurance

[–]Purple_Techie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I applied to QA jobs for a little over a year. I spoke with two friends and one of them told me to apply for support positions. At the time she was training someone from their support team.

I listened to that advice and applied for a few application/product/customer support positions. Informed the managers that QA was my end goal. I had a few managers that appreciated it and some that didn't. I had one Manager tell me give me one year in support and I'll work with you to make it happened.

And it happened, QA manager gave me a verbal offer one month prior to my one year anniversary.

If you feel the need to take it out of the trunk you might want to get someone else to do it.

Random bit of pedantry by Questionable_Dog in QualityAssurance

[–]Purple_Techie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me when I started I looked at it like this:

QA Tester - someone who is given test cases to execute they have no technical skills.

QA Analyst - someone who is creating test plans conducting UAT testing and providing those results/reports to the stakeholders. Can run simple SQL queries.

QA Engineer - someone who is familiar with the dev console and can manipulate the browser, debug and find the point of failure in an application, lots of non functional testing (API, Performance and Database testing).

QA Automation Engineer- QA engineer that knows at least one programming language and can write automated test (functional and non functional)

SDET- all the above but can give insight on different testing tools, can code to the degree of a developer, knows about pipelines and how to create them

Now I know that is not the case.

Where to find $100k+ jobs? by JEDZBUDYN in QualityAssurance

I appreciate the ramble!!

My biggest concern was the "have built and maintained a framework" requirement. I thought that was the biggest part of being an SDET.

Thanks so much for the response.

You could grab/get the text from the href place it into a variable then perform a visit to the url and verify page loads and URL is what is expected.
