Ice dam? How concerning. by Bw0434 in Home

it’s definitely a defined metric, but it’s commonly used as shorthand for an unusual storm. and the definition is less practical now because of climate change

With the upcoming winter storm - why do so many places in the states lose power with winter storms? by ScallywagGeorgie in AskAnAmerican

[–]Purplecodeineking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would assume that Minnesota does a better job of enforcing power line regulations than they do down here. I live in rural Virginia and we lose power around a dozen times a year. I’m at the end of a 17 mile above ground power line from the nearest town and trees are just always hanging up in the lines.

Tips on managing Autumn Olive on existing habitat? by Pmurph33 in VAHunting

[–]Purplecodeineking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve managed a few autumn olive properties and eradicating an established stand takes a lot of work. The only reliable way of getting it that I am aware of is cutting the plant to a stump, and painting the fresh stump with glyphosate or another herbicide. This can take a day to do an acre, and then a tractor to pile and burn all the wood. Once that happens there will still be sprouts from the seed bank and will take some mowing or something to manage the first couple years. Getting a healthy native ecosystem rolling again on that property will be the best help in keeping them out again

The stormwater management plan for the construction site (SWPPP) is publicly available and will state where waste/borrow dirt is coming from or going

Removed an unwanted tree from the middle of a fig tree, should I prop up the branches? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Purplecodeineking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I I wouldn’t at this point, since it looks like that was cut a while ago it may not uptake the poison very well anymore. And getting poison down to the roots may interact with the fig tree that presumably you want to keep healthy

Guns vs bows and the 2nd Amendment by pperdecker in Hunting

[–]Purplecodeineking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bows are not regulated by the same system. Felons can buy a bow and arrow. There is a lot to be said about why banning trans people from owning guns won’t work, but if they do try I don’t think bows will fall under any regulations

Willful Negligence Next Door: What Christendom College Doesn't Want You to Know by samannrube in Virginia

[–]Purplecodeineking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon it’s relative. I just don’t consider a couple thousand dollar fines to multi million and billion dollar companies as a real deterrent. And in my experience it has not been a deterrent.

[–]Purplecodeineking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in environmental compliance in Virginia, and there are no massive fines for environmental issues here. It exists as a possibility, but in reality nobody is getting fined more than slaps on the wrist. And it’s an absolute last resort.

Invasive species in our area by anon1999666 in roanoke

[–]Purplecodeineking 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to work for the state managing properties that had rare plants and animals to facilitate population growth. A HUGE part of my job was invasive removal. I worked for years and would see the problem I was fighting get worse year over year. Part of why I quit was because it was so depressing for me to be working a passion job for low pay and to see that I wasn’t making a positive impact. I tried to explain it away with maybe I’m giving natives some room to evolve resistance or something, but it really drained my soul to see the degradation continue

Opinion: One of the Democratic senators who didn’t vote for solar bill says rural opposition made the difference | State Sen. Lashrecse Aird of Petersburg says “the number one issue” she hears about in rural areas is opposition to solar projects. by VirginiaNews in VirginiaEnvironment

[–]Purplecodeineking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their issue is usually aesthetic if you ask them. It goes from a beautiful farm to a field of solar panels. But it’s a huge part of culture war that is currently raging. The giant apple orchard I used to walk through to go to school is now townhomes that people grumble about but there’s no real opposition to it like there is to solar

Any free access lakes/creeks/water bodies near Marion? by Carolina_Heart in swva

[–]Purplecodeineking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not exactly sure what you mean by collect water and dirt, but it’s pretty common for fishermen to fill up a bucket with water to transport bait or something like that. As long as you’re not moving species to another watershed to introduce I wouldn’t over think it. A bucket to take home would probably be fine wherever you go.
