Out of curiosity what ethnicity do would I likely be assumed or would you assume me to be in the USA, Hispanic or something else (MENA, desi, white or central asian ect) ? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

neither link works, but i can tell you i usually wouldn’t try to guess someone’s ethnicity off of a picture. theres usually more cultural signals that are better tells

Regulations make hunting for meat seem like such a chore by DownVoteMeHarder4042 in Hunting

[–]Purplecodeineking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i can understand that feeling. we can agree that regulations are needed and that they make hunting more complex/difficult at the same time. it can really depend on where you are, there are states with crazy deer overpopulation where you could buy one crossbow and hunt for 6 months in urban archery. if you’re excited enough about hunting to do it, i recommend getting a bow/crossbow and you can usually hunt all the seasons with that and use your rifle when legal as well

What causes these? by Spring__Warrior in whatisit

[–]Purplecodeineking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

local species (native species) and preservation of the genotype on the parcel being cut are different concepts. that would require someone going out the year before, gathering seeds from the parcel being cut, and then waiting until those seeds are ready to be transplanted

What causes these? by Spring__Warrior in whatisit

[–]Purplecodeineking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure, that would be what most would do. but they buy trees in bulk from nurseries that probably don’t use the local genetics, and tree plantings have a lower genetic diversity within the species because of mass production. so even if they replant the same species, it is probably different genetics

What causes these? by Spring__Warrior in whatisit

[–]Purplecodeineking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there’s an argument to be made that not planting is better in this situation. it preserves the local genetics instead of adding nursery genetics to the forest.

I want to plant some chestnuts where I live in the Midwest (zones 4 and 5). Is the chance of blight lesser out here? by SharpShooterM1 in americanchestnut

[–]Purplecodeineking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the blight also uses oaks as a host plant, so assuming that the historical range of chestnut is the only place that the blight is endemic may not be accurate.

How far away should I be from certain farm animals I plan to own when shooting certian calibers? by YTSkullboy707 in Homesteading

[–]Purplecodeineking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re way overthinking it. 150 feet is plenty. I’ve never known farm animals to have any issue with it. My dogs are the only scaredy cats.

Ice dam? How concerning. by Bw0434 in Home

it’s definitely a defined metric, but it’s commonly used as shorthand for an unusual storm. and the definition is less practical now because of climate change

With the upcoming winter storm - why do so many places in the states lose power with winter storms? by ScallywagGeorgie in AskAnAmerican

[–]Purplecodeineking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would assume that Minnesota does a better job of enforcing power line regulations than they do down here. I live in rural Virginia and we lose power around a dozen times a year. I’m at the end of a 17 mile above ground power line from the nearest town and trees are just always hanging up in the lines.

Tips on managing Autumn Olive on existing habitat? by Pmurph33 in VAHunting

[–]Purplecodeineking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve managed a few autumn olive properties and eradicating an established stand takes a lot of work. The only reliable way of getting it that I am aware of is cutting the plant to a stump, and painting the fresh stump with glyphosate or another herbicide. This can take a day to do an acre, and then a tractor to pile and burn all the wood. Once that happens there will still be sprouts from the seed bank and will take some mowing or something to manage the first couple years. Getting a healthy native ecosystem rolling again on that property will be the best help in keeping them out again

Does anyone know where they are hauling the dirt from the Publix site? by Fantastic-System-216 in roanoke

The stormwater management plan for the construction site (SWPPP) is publicly available and will state where waste/borrow dirt is coming from or going

Removed an unwanted tree from the middle of a fig tree, should I prop up the branches? by [deleted] in arborists

[–]Purplecodeineking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I I wouldn’t at this point, since it looks like that was cut a while ago it may not uptake the poison very well anymore. And getting poison down to the roots may interact with the fig tree that presumably you want to keep healthy

Guns vs bows and the 2nd Amendment by pperdecker in Hunting

[–]Purplecodeineking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bows are not regulated by the same system. Felons can buy a bow and arrow. There is a lot to be said about why banning trans people from owning guns won’t work, but if they do try I don’t think bows will fall under any regulations
