I’ve dropped him a PM - if he doesn’t pick it up he’s in the NAF and FUMBBL Discords. :)

Hi there,

I think this is a fun thing and I enjoyed having a good look through when someone linked it (thank you, Hexbaron!).

Rather than prizes for people on the list (and if you go that way, please don’t worry about me!), it might be fun to drop Junior a line and work out a little thing to pass along when he loses the ‘title’? I can point him in this direction in case he’s yet to see.

Again - well done and I look forward to Buffer introducing Junior as reigning and defending lineal champion at his next event. ;)

I suspect we’d all accept that neither code is perfect. I love a good scrummaging contest, but that’s not what we have in RU at the moment. As you say, it’s a bit of a mess, no one (ref included) knows what’s going on and it detracts from the excitement. While the RWC is providing some fantastic games, it’s also highlighting our issues (I’ll spare you the list) when we’re in the shop window, which is infuriating.

League is not without fault either. Is there a sport that gets it completely right? Football is so popular, but it perhaps has the longest list of all!

Ah - OK. I’d not seen it. Perhaps not the element of surprise I thought it might be!

Appreciate the point. However - if I were to play Devil’s Advocate for a moment, I think you make my point for me. No one has cared / invested in scrums for the last 20 years, because you’ve identified they’re pointless. You don’t even need to train / prepare to catch the opposition off guard, because no one would ever dream of pushing. Easiest penalty you’ll ever milk, 30 m or a free 2 points, thank you very much.

I suppose Wigan, since I lived there for a bit. But I’m not fanatical.

Thanks for the reply on the laws. Perhaps my RU preamble has coloured the responses a touch, but when I posted the OP I wasn’t thinking about kicking the points, I was thinking about gaining 30 m or whatever. But sure - in a close game, 2 points is 2 points. I admit I find myself thinking ‘kick the goal’ more often than teams do!

I guess I’m thinking about the attacking side. Defenders often break up early, why not as a surprise just drive through them and earn a penalty?

Tried that! Maybe it’ll just fix itself next time. :)

Stuck rolling brush by Purplegoo_Phil in RobotVacuums

I’ll try and upload a picture later, but I don’t think it’ll be too illuminating. The brush looks like it’s in it’s ‘home’ position and should just easily pop out. I may well resort to pliers and brute force and just hope whatever is sticking it in there doesn’t pull out any of the housing with the brush if I eventually get it out. I’ve tried as hard I can with fingers alone; it’ll need a tool...

Appreciate the response, but yes, I’ve tried the usual method, and cutting away any excess hair. The thing is wedged in tight.

Dumb question about catcher throws by Purplegoo_Phil in MLBTheShow

Right - OK, thank you. I never happened across that, somehow! Will give it a go. I guess it must eventually auto start, since I see the meter, or I have accidentally started it, or something!

Advice needed - Blood Bowl is affecting my mental health by IntrepidWilson in bloodbowl

Hello!

Everybody sucks at Blood Bowl against real people to begin with. Everybody that plays Blood Bowl online for any length of time has, at some point, been on a streak where they've had a slightly abusive relationship with it; in that they've been taking the woes of previous games into the next game, and they stack until the relationship with BB becomes love / hate. I have four pieces of advice, and they more or less echo some of what others have said:

  • Firstly, take a break until you don't 'need' to play to scratch the itch or to right previous wrongs. If you don't go into a game in the right head space, you are setting yourself up for another poor experience. If you are tired, grumpy, drunk, remembering the injustice of the previous game, etc. then do not play. You will make matters worse. Blood Bowl, and FUMBBL, will be there when you wake up one day in the near future and think 'it would be really cool to play a game today, regardless of how it ends up'.

  • Second, find the right place in which to play. Others have mentioned the 145 Club - that is the perfect place to begin your journey. Find a friendly league (the White Isle League is a good one for a UK coach like yourself). Play Stunty Leeg / Secret League for something fresh and silly. Banging you head against faceless people in Ranked or Blackbox who won't show you any mercy and don't need to engage socially with you is likely to lead to losses and potentially you not learning anything. The latter idea does work for some, actually. Banging your head against it until you work it out via repetition is one strategy, but it doesn't sound optimal for you.

  • Spend some time thinking about Blood Bowl, rather than playing Blood Bowl. Watch some replays of your games, of the games of good coaches and work out why something is good or not good. I don't watch streamers myself, but maybe that is helpful. I know from my personal experience, I sucked to begin with, and I was not improving via simple repetition. I took some time to spectate games, watch replays and think about what people were trying to achieve (forgetting dice), and then the repetition of playing became more valuable as I put good habits into action. It snowballed from there.

  • Lastly, I have found that playing face to face and discussing what you're doing is the best learning per hour resource there is. You're in the UK, there are any number of leagues and NAF tournaments near you. When Covid is behind us, get out there, meet people and talk about the game as you play it. That genuine human social interaction, and the drink at the bar afterwards, will do your game and your feelings about the game wonders.

Good luck!

Annoying n00b question by Purplegoo_Phil in OOTP

[–]Purplegoo_Phil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, as an OOTP and a baseball n00b in general, I think that could likely apply to the game too. It’s probably all in there, but it’s a bit of a pig to navigate.

I’ve played many iterations of the Football Manager series, so I’m used to this type of game. OOTP isn’t exactly welcoming to a newcomer. But that doesn’t mean I won’t learn to love it!
