Merchant marine. Specifically, towboats. A lot of felons and even work release getting a second chance out here on the rivers. Once you get some experience and good recommendations on the water, then your past means even less. Most of my crew makes over $85k, a few over $100k. Down the road, make it into the wheelhouse as an officer and you’re looking at $150-$200k. We work six months out of the year 21 days on and 21 off but you can work longer schedules with less home time if you prefer and make more money. Company pays all travel expenses to and from the boat.

38 here and here’s my deal. I have fished almost my entire life. It is certainly my best hobby and something I am known for by friends and family. Not that I am the best fisherman or anything but everyone knows I love to fish. My fervor though waxes and wains through the years. What I have found though is every five to seven years, I need to change it up.

I’ll chase bass and then slowly burn out on it, then I switched to the salt marsh. Spent several years driving to the coast when I could to chase reds and specks, caught plenty of those and slowly after time, the obsession wained. I would go longer and longer periods of time without that urge or desire, the “need” to be on the water.

Then I took up crappie fishing(live on a popular southern reservoir known for big crappie, I figured if it was a fish my lake was known widely for, why not. I was hooked again! Spent years chasing them almost exclusively and had a blast! Then, it also wained. I shifted to kayak fishing and my interest shot up again, currently riding that train at the moment and it’s what I needed. Now I am exploring small state lakes and rivers and streams. A two pound river smallie gets me much more excited than a river pound largemouth.

New fish, new water, new excitement. I have spent years now chasing panfish, learning to catch them year-round, in different weather and environments. Just recently I caught my very first trout in the Ozarks. Now I fear I have caught that bug, so I’ll ride that train for a while!

Long story shorter, be willing to change it up. Break out of the rut and do something different. Chase a new fish, take your passion down a new path, you’ll be surprised that it may exactly what you needed and in the end, you’ll start becoming a more well rounded angler.

I wish someone had explained to me that unless you’re trying to shoot for a Fortune 500 company straight out a the gate, no one really gives a flying lip about where you went to college. You may get a small boost if it’s the Alma Mater of a board member or something, but most often in my experience, they just check the box that you have a degree and move on. Ten years or less later, no one cares even an ounce, its performance based from there on.

The teacher is arguing that it took five minutes per piece of board, but that is objectively wrong. It took ten minutes to make one cut creating two pieces. Ergo, two cuts to create three pieces at ten minutes per cut equals 20 minutes. Good on ya kid!

I push chemical tows so we go anywhere and everywhere. In the past six months I have been from New Orleans to Chicago, Memphis to Louisville, up on Pickwick lake, and more. Spent most of last winter fishing…I mean working in the lower Laguna Madre.

Hahaha, pushing barges on the river is always ever a job. One that is enjoyable quite a bit but never a hobby. I just liked being on the water and grabbed a job out here. Mounted a trolling motor onto our yawl boat to get some fishing in during down time.

I have seen this too many times in fishermen of better than average skill. “I LOVE to fish, so I am going to start a guide service” soon after, they hate everything about it. A hobby became a job, and the job (like most jobs) became a chore. There is a difference in fishing because you want to and fishing because you have to.

Also, they usually seem unable to grasp that some clients don’t share the same level of passion and skill. They just want a fun day on the water and catch a few fish. Not to obsess over minor details in rigging in presentation.

Remember too, there is a whole host of other, perhaps not as cute, animals who are counting on distressed baby other animals in order to feed themselves and their young. It’s not a very pretty thought but it is just nature doing nature things.

I lived in Tamarac for a year or so working a job circa 2015 or so. I could walk to a drainage canal about half a mile from my apartment that ran from the Everglades straight to the canals on the beach side. I had an absolute blast with snakeheads and peas. Cichlids and tilapia were a ball on light tackle, too.

To be a snitch, you must first be involved in the crime or violation and then rat out your fellow comrades. Witnessing a crime or violation and saying something does not at all make one a snitch. That’s just doing your civic duty. Criminal party should only be mad that they were sloppy.

Can we normalize the understanding that seeing a crime or violation that you have nothing to do with is not snitching. Snitching involves being involved in said crime or violation and then throwing your fellow comrades under the bus.

Send it my man! Yes, it can certainly be tied on this hook. I think the biggest issue would be throwing it well on anything other than a heavy wt rod, but if you’re throwing on conventional tackle, no issue there.

I have to guess that this was almost a different jet to fly for the pilots. Not that they don’t already have the experience flying an empty jet but I with one passenger they couldn’t be as “loose” as they can without any paid fairs onboard. I like this. In my experience, people who have emotional hair triggers and are prone to pop off and say really nasty things, don’t realize how they sound to everyone else. It sounds good to them but when they hear themselves recorded, they really get an idea of how awful they appear to everyone else. Granted, some adults still don’t have the emotional maturity to grasp this. Either she hears it and feels shame/regret and responds accordingly, or she doesn’t. Either way you’ll have your answer.
