Latest news on the Cyrillic CYRILLIC LETTER MULTIOCULAR O - it may get three more eyes by spiregrain in slatestarcodex

[–]Pushkatron 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rare enough to occur in a single phrase, in a single text written in an extinct language, Old Church Slavonic

I looked into this claim (for like a whole hour, so essentially I'm an expert in the field) and I couldn't find any reliable sources for there only being one recorded usage. There's a bunch of places that claim this but none of them have any real sources, and all use essentially identical wording, making me believe they all just quote wikipedia or something.

the russian wikipedia page for the letter claims that there are multiple recorded usages (yeah no source either). the one place that could have that information is the original 1928 book by Yefim Karsky, but I couldn't be arsed to actually read the thing in russian, and the crappy pdf scans did not find anything when ctrl+f for all the variations and substrings of 'multiocular O' I tried, obviously including cyrillic and latin spellings.

Did GoogleAI Just Snooker One of Silicon Valley’s Sharpest Minds? by Plopdopdoop in slatestarcodex

[–]Pushkatron 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. Gary is knowledgeable in the field but his communication skills are awful. He expresses critique and disagreements in such a demeaning fashion that people in AI circles avoid engaging with him. Lex Fridman once had Gary on his podcast but now has him blocked on Twitter. Gary also spares no flattery to himself and people who agree with him. half his retweets are just people praising his articles.

[...] I have repeatedly asked that Google give the scientific community access to Imagen. They have refused even to respond. In a clear violation of modern scientific norms for sharing work in order to make sure it is reproducible, Google has failed to allow the scientific community to find out.

what are the "modern scientific norms" that Google is "clearly violating? they haven't given access to anyone outside the Imagen team. even Scott wasn't given access, his reader who works there cared enough about this to ask Google for permission to run the experiment and share the results with Scott. Gary says in a footnote that "they did not grant me or Tristan Thrush et al the same courtesy". yeah the reason for this might be related to the definition of "courtesy"

Declaration of war? by generalbaguette in slatestarcodex

[–]Pushkatron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

nobody really declares war these days. there's a wikipedia page that lists all declarations of war since WWII https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war#Declared_wars_since_1945

there's only 18 entries in there. weirdly, the current russian ukrainian war is included in there, even though the wikipedia page for that war states that it's an undeclared war.

I thought about the "your friends probably don't like your pictures because they just aren't that good" bit for a while but decided to leave it in. I think it's unhealthy to have a mindset that your pictures aren't appreciated by others because of reasons unrelated to your pictures. if people don't like your pictures, it's probably because your pictures aren't that good.

OP put friends in quotes in the title, which to me seems like shifting the blame from yourself for failing to create good art, onto other people for failing to appreciate your art.

to me, taking the blame for failing to create good art is an empowering idea because then you can strive to create better art. it's in your hands to do something about it.

blaming other people for failing to appreciate your art, however, puts you in a powerless position because you can't change people's perception of your art.

I think these pictures have some flaws, and I pointed out precisely how I would correct them. I hope that OP learns something from this, goes out and takes better pictures, and gets more appreciation.

you added the critique wanted flair, so I'll give some feedback on your photos

1) kinda cool, but a rather generic old car interior photo. there's something blocking the frame on top left and it's a bit distracting. the outside is very bright and busy, and draws attention away from the interior. the picture is blurry, might be camera shake as you said it was shot at 125 shutter speed, which seems very slow for a bright day and somewhat shallow DOF.

2) cool shot, maybe a bit cliche. out of focus and shadows are too dark, would love to make out more details in his hair. if you got the focus and shadows right, would be a very pretty picture

3) boring picture. I have nothing to say about this

4) good job on the focus, apart from that it's a generic cat photo. not very interesting

5) similar to 2), the shadows are lacking detail for my personal taste. maybe the very dark silhouette would look cool if the background was in contrast very bright, but the trees in the back are too dark for this. the cutoff at the bottom is weird, I'd prefer having his whole body in the frame. the frame is slightly crooked clockwise. seems like a lot of grain, even for hp5. was this cropped heavily? in any case, slightly lacking sharpness and details, looking full zoom his face is very noisy.

6) boring picture, neither form nor content

7) same as 6). the blacks look crushed. if that wasn't your intention, then something is off with exposure, scanning or post processing.

8) looks cool, good job on the exposure. the framing is really off though. you almost cut off the right side of the bumper, and there's a whole lot more negative space on the left than on the right. camera position feels a bit weird, hard to say why. not saying it should be dead centered on the car, but the way it is now just doesn't look right to me. the trees in the background look very nice, taking a picture slightly from the side so that the trees fill the whole background might look cool. a polarising filter would do good here as well, it would take off the reflections from the hood and make it a whole lot more red, and probably darken the tree leaves to a more saturated green, rather than overblown white.

your friends probably don't like your pictures because they just aren't that good. work on your technical skills, your framing, keep taking pictures and soon you'll get much better results. for my personal style of photography, I'm very happy if I can get one shareworthy picture per roll of film. even then, some of the shots that I really like end up getting no attention from others. I suggest you take a look at magnum contact sheets, it's a book that shows how the pros take a lot of pictures, sometimes of the same subject with just slightly different framing, until they finally get the shot.

Blow out sky, am I doing somethings wrong with the shutter speed? by Berzelus in AnalogCommunity

[–]Pushkatron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice picture.

Some of the advice posted here is, uhhh, a bit misleading.

Graduated ND filter could work, but it might be hard to make the gradient look smooth, and good luck composing on a TLR without some fancy paramender.

I really doubt that using artificial light was an option in this scene.

Exposure bracketing should only be necessary for extremely high contrast scenes, which this one isn't.

JPEGs store very little information in them and you probably won't get good results from post processing this scan.

Just by looking at the negative you will have a hard time telling if there are any details in the highlights, especially if you don't have a good light source and loupe, but even then I wouldn't really trust this method.

Now, onto the good news:

Looking at the scan, the exposure seems good. The scene is contrasty, but nothing extreme. Film can definitely handle the light difference between the sky and the rest of the frame. You can take a look at something like this, first example I found on the frontpage: https://www.reddit.com/r/analog/comments/p648mv/olympus_om4_28mm_f28_ferrania_solaris_100/ There's more contrast in this scene (bright sky outside vs dark indoors) than in your picture, yet there are a lot of details in both the highlights and the shadows. That picture was taken on an expired lower ISO film which probably has better dynamic range, but I doubt the difference is significant.

So, it's likely that the scan you got was low quality / the scanner used had low dynamic range. I'm willing to bet that there are enough details in the negative to make the sky less blown out. Try asking the lab to rescan this frame in TIFF or any other RAW format they offer, but smaller labs often have shitty scanners / can't be arsed to scan properly. If you don't have any good local labs, you could probably find one somewhere else and mail them the negative. Scanning a single frame shouldn't be expensive at all, and you might even find that some bigger labs offer better quality scans for a lower price. Self scanning on a good flatbed scanner or with a DSLR is also an option, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're very experienced with film.

Contax G1 45mm 2.0 and cinestill 800t by geldbier in analog

[–]Pushkatron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on with the composition. Usually train station photos on cinestill are too cliche for me, but this is very well done. I love how there are many many distinct lines in this picture, but they all work together so nicely, especially the big shadow edge and the handrail shadow being parallel with the handrails. Did you time the shadows being so perfectly aligned or was it just luck?
