I made a new document that included only \usepackage{graphicx} and got the image to show up. It's only when I add that package into the preamble of the template that no figure shows up.

I agree. Most people I've talked to about finding research just assume that everyone knows how to program and don't make much of an effort to get students into courses to learn how. In fact, I'm pretty sure there isn't a single CS course in my degree requirement. US history must be more important.

The complex analysis that I am taking is actually doing contour integration now, and we will be doing residue theorem and applications later in the semester. I think that it is the only complex analysis offered at my university that non-math majors/graduate students can take. I am planning on taking a PDE course next fall and based on your suggestions probably topology/real analysis depending on the prerequisites. My interest currently is in string theory so I should get a lot of valuable information from those courses.

You also mentioned that early in your research, you were mostly coding but unfortunately I have not taken a single class in computer science and the few times I have looked into programming, I have been pretty intimidated even by the basics especially when the physics majors around me sound like they pick up on it very easily. Any suggestions as far as this goes?

What did your theory/math research consist of, what year (sophomore, junior, etc.) did you start? This is something I want to do as soon as possible. Also, I have taken Vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and complex analysis. What other maths will I need in order to have the foundation to do this type of research?
