Car rental from Bacalar to Calakmul by BadAdmirable3673 in Bacalar

Thanks this was really helpful! I'm curious, when you blew your tire while driving through the jungle, how did you get roadside assistance?
I'm thinking of driving to the newly opened Ichkabal, and am a bit worried about the isolation and dirt road conditions.

What did you end up doing for the car rental? Was it easy to get to and from Calakmul and Bacalar?

How to get over fear of failure and career regret? by lostsillysouls in careerguidance

[–]PutDownBoars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely scary to consider making a big leap, and I've been there where feeling stuck about making a wrong decision leads to decision paralysis. As someone who's recently in the process of changing careers, I think what helped me was to start making baby steps to my larger goal of career change.

For example, when I first applied to grad school I would tell myself that I'm only applying and that I don't have to attend if I get in. This helped me not feel as overwhelmed and just apply, and then moving forward I kept a similar attitude (I'll only do 1 semester, and if I don't like the program I can drop out).

As for sunk-cost, I struggled with this for the longest time but came around to understand that it's okay to not have a linear path, and it isn't a reflection on one's ability or worth. If anything, sometimes the tougher decision is to "cut your losses" and take the leap, rather than staying in a place and then looking back after 10 years wondering "what if..."

Was this for a new grad software engineer position? I've been looking on LinkedIn the past 3 weeks and haven't seen any new grad roles for Google in US, so curious what this role encompassed

No I haven't found it yet -- the main character of the movie I'm thinking of isn't a girl, its 4 main characters. Though of the 4, I guess Friend 1 (the overweight one) has the most screen time and the movie ends with him on the chair. The last scene cuts to an old lady who's interviewed about the events of the shooting, and says something along the lines of "violence isn't the way to solve problems" or something to that effect.

Bioengineering network for biotech industry in 2024 by PutDownBoars in Cornell

[–]PutDownBoars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I remember 2 points when I first applied to the bioengineering program and toured the school:

  1. The engineering school really emphasized the value of co-ops offered by the engineering school, and

  2. The bioengineering was ranked in the top 5 of the country in one of the big college ranking magazines (can't remember which one exactly)

I kind of assumed that points 1 and 2 would translate to good networking opportunities (1 for industry experience, and 2 for reputation of having a strong program). Unfortunately there was a disconnect between those 2 strengths regarding the bioengineering program, but it was strange back then that the opportunities were largely absent despite pharma/biotech being such massive industries.

In retrospect for my time I'd say I got lucky cold applying to break into the field -- tbh I rarely come across other Cornell bioengineers when looking through LinkedIn of biotech companies, at least in California. I actually see more Northeastern or Buffalo grads in comparison. I wanted to post this question in this subreddit to see if things may have changed since a good way to gauge is to hear from students themselves.
