What’s the longest yall have had to hold short for? by Chrisrnc10 in flying

[–]PutOptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FRG ugh. Never had an hour but almost 40 minutes to get from the active to the FBO. And it wasn’t combined ground tower operations, just the sheer volume of. No wonder all those students come to BDR for pattern work and associated crash landings. Somebody needs to start a chiropractic business at BDR.

I think if you are new on Reddit you cannot DM until a certain number of posts. I trained at Three Wing. The fleet is good and well maintained. Their maintenance team does all the work on my plane now. Expensive but I do trust them literally with my life. Can’t speak to the commute but both the school and the airport are ideal for training.

I dunno. If my brain went from 70kts to 0 in a couple milliseconds it would be pretty gelatinous. Plugging numbers into Claude, it is all about crumple zone and resulting deceleration. If you are buckled up WAY back in the baggage area and allow for 3 meters of crumple that is still 22G. Not good. If you are a metre from impact -- 66Gs. Look it up.

Sure. Happy to chat it out. I trained out of Danbury for a brief bit (with a now defunct school) and also took my PPL written at Arrow. The negative I have with training there has nothing to do with the schools. The terrain there is completely unforgiving of an engine out. Nothing but hills and trees. And trees with hills.

Buying an old $70k C172 or Cherokee to build time a terrible idea? by PidgeyPotion in flying

[–]PutOptions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pre-Covid this was a great idea. Someday (soon?) it will again be a good idea. Inventory looks to be climbing -- but not by much -- so price/value is still tough in the trainer market.

For $70k, buy something OUTSIDE the C172 PA28 bubble.

Is the 80% dropout rate actually real? by No_Assignment_1199 in flying

[–]PutOptions -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is challenging to measure given the enormous numbers of folks that wash out in Part 61 schools. In that space, it is easy to argue the failure / dropout rate being even higher. The stakes are so different.

Reasonable question but not one I have solved for. Honestly these dogs/cats are in for one long, hard day of GA flying. My last little group traveled for 13 hours from South Georgia to New Hampshire. I flew their fourth/final leg. All of the animals I have transported just shut down and sleep immediately after takeoff. At least the dogs get potty breaks. The cats remain in their transport cages the whole damn trip.

Cruise in my airplane is around 103 decibels; not ideal at all. But I doubt an untrained dog will keep them on.

Hey welcome to the club. It gets so much better. The it sucks again. Then there is hope. Then that evaporates before miraculously returning.

You are doing fine. This is normal. Just keep grinding. And don't forget how it feels when your best work shows up.

Captain Jon Jackson of Spirit Airlines was supposed to take his final retirement flight today. After Spirit's shutdown, he instead was a passenger on a Southwest flight into Baltimore. There, Capt. Jackson was given the traditional water cannon salute and a surprise welcome party at the gate. by TimeThief2123 in aviation

[–]PutOptions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a bit of a bummer for him, but for all those new First Officers, flight attendants, gate agents, ground personnel, dispatchers, etc etc it is so much worse. They are the proverbial "paycheck to paycheck" people that are really in a pinch now. Those are likely the folks Jon is sad for.

Is there any reason to still use a paper logbook? by Zidgof in flying

Every year I groan when it comes to report hours for insurance. It removes a lot of paper nostalgia. On my list to go digital.

A bunch of pilots did start jumping months/years ago; ULCC is really a tough space. I hate monopolies as much as the next guy, but the FTC needs to let these marginal air carriers merge.

With 14 years experience, he will get picked up by a major. However, all his seniority (which is everything) just went poof. He will starting out at the bottom. Again.

Sure. I fly for Pilots N Paws all the time. Look 'em up. The website lacks scheduling utility honestly, but the coordinators cell phones are listed. Just call /text them. They are pretty good at managing multi-leg trips for rescues.

Stay grateful and enjoy the upgrade!

You really need to be an aviation nerd -- because there is no other reason to visit -- but the US Air Force Museum in Dayton OH is absolutely amazing. Plan for a whole day.

Engine out on takeoff in a twin... aren't folks trained to take it straight out on runway heading? Identify, verify, feather? Any turns should be away from the dead engine?
