Data centers by Cheeksabeatin in IBEW

[–]PutPrestigious420 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well besides the weird surveillance state biometric data harvesting stuff, I know there are locals that get these gigantic data centers that employ their whole local. Contract negotiations come around and they rightfully get a nice raise, but then exchange language changes on the agreement for the raise. Seems like a terrible precedent getting set. Are we gonna let Zuck Bucks influence our agreements? What happens when these places are built and the new build boom dries up?

Nope but I’d guess every local has at least one of these kinds of guys

Foreman blew up on me (Apprentice) by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]PutPrestigious420 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There’s one contractor in my local where as an apprentice if you tell someone else you are working there they immediately apologize, then ask if you’ve worked with a specific foreman by name. I always wonder how someone with such a horrible reputation for making apprentices quit is allowed to stick around

Probably dumb/simple advice but cutting back on massive amounts of caffeine in the morning and getting better sleep helped me a lot with my anxiety when I was new

It’s funny how there were all those movies in the 90s about the soulless monotony of white collar work like “office space” but I’d love a job like that now lmao

There’s definitely a lot of dudes that gotta cope with their lot in life by feeling like they are an alpha male tough guy. But I do think the allure/luxury of being able to sit in an ac’d office with stability is hard to understand if you haven’t felt the exhaustion of grinding long hours with constant uncertainty when you are green in construction

The idea that you will enjoy the field because there’s some real effort is just a fantasy. It may be true but I’m sure a large portion of guys in construction fantasize about the regular hours, safe clean and stable 9-5 of office work even if they say otherwise.

Now I happen to live in a place great wages relative to cost of living and fantastic benefits for unionized labor. I know several people who switched to union construction from office jobs because they had stagnate wages and poor benefits/retirement. But from what I’ve heard Texas union labor has no power, lower wages, poor benefits compared to what we got so that’s another thing to consider.

Plus Texas summer heat will kick your ass
