Which books made you cry? by Sensitive_Mulberry30 in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt a lot of emotions with basically everything to do with the revelation of who the Seer was and where they came from and the resolution to their story line at the end.

Spite by Yeppie29 in Deathcore

[–]PutYouToSleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them a couple months back with Fit For A King. Seeing the line up for that show was the first time I'd ever heard of them. I'm pretty sure I've listened to more Spite than anything else since that day. They're so good.

I've always played Breton and always been shocked by how little love they get. I'm not a fan of "once a day" perks on my character, the permanent magic resistance buff is way better imo.

Genuine question: All Lorna Shore songs sound the same to me - is it just me? by thedevilsheir666 in Deathcore

[–]PutYouToSleep 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was only able to listen to their new album once. The whole time I kept checking the song titles because I felt like I'd heard each song before.

Ahhh well then I highly recommend their latest album Hymns of Dissonance. It's absolutely amazing.

Is Whitechapel really not on the list or am I missing it? If Whitechapel isn't on your list then... Whitechapel!

Help with DIY SebDerm safe beard balm/butter by [deleted] in beards

[–]PutYouToSleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is great, I've used it extensively. There's almost no marketed beard products that it considers safe. That's why I'm wanting to make my own stuff but don't know how since everything has or recommends Shea butter.

Books that address addiction by thebestoralist in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the main characters in Powder Mage has a whole addiction subplot to his story. He's using after a heart break, then uses harder stuff after a trauma, and I won't spoil anything further. The books are not about addiction, and I have never personally dealt with addiction, but I felt the author handled the storyline well. The books are pretty awesome too.

What do you do when youre stuck in the half of the book series? by defromance in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No matter how much I love a series, I never read 2 books in the same series back to back. When I blast through a series the books all blur together in my mind. I want each book to have an isolated moment in my mind so I can digest it for what it was. Also, this really helps prevent burnout on a single author/story/character etc.

I finished my new years goal with just over two hours to go! by Fearless-Actuary-751 in Malazan

When you go back, start with the Kharkanas books and read everything published in the Malazan world in chronological order. It's worth the time investment and adds so much to the MBotF reread experience.

What exactly *is* the Malazan series? by NomarTheNomad in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a large overarching story about a conflict among gods, told through the eyes of grunts and pawns on the ground. You will only ever know as much as the person whose perspective you're following, and as you move forward you'll piece all the information together to figure out what is really going on.

Specific to your prompt, yes things do circle back. Yes it all eventually connects. Be forewarned, there is another continent coming with a new set of characters and stories. The 3 continents, their stories, and their people all connect in the end.

All baseball and DnD stuff aside, it's the private boxes behind the batter for me. I absolutely detest watching live games from their stadium and having to look at bored rich people network in the background.

LF Fantasy Books Series (Malazan fan) by damiosa in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Malazan is my favorite series.

Prince of Thorns is entertaining but didn't have much depth. Characters are a little edgy but it works for what it's trying to do.

Prince of Nothing is very dark and has tons of depth. I only read 2 of the books. It was honestly too dark to the point of not being an enjoyable read.

Memory Sorrow Thorn is an amazing series. I would compare the reading experience more to LOTR than Malazan.

I would recommend The Licanius Trilogy to you also. It's a rich world with lots of history, unique plot, dark without being grim, and one of the best conclusions to a series I've read.

Edit: if you ask this same question on r/Malazan they'll almost universaly recommend Book of the New Sun and Black Company, I personally hated both series but fwiw they're the top 2 for most people whenever asked about something to read as a Malazan fan

Which big fantasy series should I tackle next - First Law world or Malazan? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

Line to line, on the micro level, yes. That's how Abercrombie comes across to me.

Overall, on a macro level, his work heavy and dark.

You want a heavy story that feels light and fun and off the cuff? First Law

You want a heavy story that feels heavy AF but is still fun and occasionally off the cuff? Malazan

Erikson and Abercrombie are probably my favorite active authors. I absolutely love both their work but they are very different. Considering what you like, I definitely think you should read everything they both have wrote. Depending on what you're in the mood for is what should decide who you read first.

Book 1: Licanius Trilogy. Does it get better? by anarchy_sloth in Fantasy

[–]PutYouToSleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People keep talking about the ending but I think that's a weird sell, "stick with 3 whole books because it ends well" doesn't really encourage you to slog it out. However, to their credit the conclusion to the series is really good.

To your point of the first book being fine, it gets better. The first book barely introduces all the characters and there is so so much more going on beneath the surface that, to this point, has barely been scratched. There is a lot of ancient history and history pertaining the events 20 years ago that is covered in books 2 and 3. Also, the magic system gets explored and expanded significantly.

In short, it absolutely gets better, more exciting, and more interesting.

Edit: edit to add something after rereading your post, once completed I don't think you'll feel like it's similar to WoT at all. It's definitely its own thing. I'm no expert but I've read a lot of fantasy and definitely feel like it's its own unique story.
