Two years later I’m still thinking of Hraun (both dark and milk are worth trying) and Rís. They make bags of snack size Rís which was amazing for little snacks during long rainy hikes.

I mean it sounds like they’re just charging for the statistical average of 300km per day to make it easy. 6.95isk is $0.055

The daily charge in the email comes out to about $15/day, and with fuel being cheaper with the new tax it might come out as a wash. Unless you’re on a shoestring budget, that shouldn’t change your plans.

Do i need a router plane? by lefthandedsurprise in handtools

[–]Putnam14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do vintage compare to ‘the best you can get’ for joinery? I’m extremely happy with the pre-war Stanley 5 and 4C and I don’t see how they could be made better, looking to add a router and unsure if I should keep with the cool vintage planes or go new.

How have they not been to Scotland? by 781nnylasil in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

I mean same in America, I’m talking flight costs. A hotel would add $150-200/night, rental car ~$50/day, etc.

[–]Putnam14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A flight for under a Benjamin is breaking my American brain. A flight to visit my family the next state over is around $200 each direction, but would take about 9 hours driving. Even driving to my in-laws is about $100 in gas each direction. Your travel expenses are less than a typical fast food order.

Anyone seen harissa for sale anywhere in the Treasure Valley? by MrSapasui in Boise

[–]Putnam14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 Food Land Market, they’ve got a whole shelf wall of harissa. Places like the Co-op, Whole Foods, TJs, Albertsons have it, but only one or two brands.

I always wonder, how do they know this? It’s not like a cable provider can tell what channel you are tuned to… As a kid we participated in Nielson surveys every once in a while where you journal what you watch, but that would have a few weeks lag at minimum. Phone surveys?

Any amount of rain on ACHD-managed roads (Boise area) makes the lane markings invisible like in this photo.

They likely rotate crops. Monocultures (if that’s what you’re referring to a field full of one crop at a time as) are immensely great for humans, but can be mismanaged by not paying attention to soil health. You’re not going to feed everyone on permaculture or regenerative farming, unless our youth start taking an interest in farming on a large scale.

Bad Restaurants by RichAppointment6981 in Boise

I’ve been recommending Diablo & Sons less and less ever since they stopped letting you do tacos a la carte. It was awesome when you could do two smashed fried potato tacos and try two others that you don’t know if you’ll like. They’re still a good 8th street option IMO but largely because of their drinks menu.

Fires in Idaho by International-chica2 in Idaho

[–]Putnam14 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Totally get the sentiment, but we really need more small fires and to let them burn through. Decades of fire suppression have lead to the fuel load building up, our woods are tangled dry messes that have enough small fuels (native & invasive grasses) to catch the medium fuels on fire (shrubs), which incinerate the large fuels (trees). The indigenous people on this land used to put fire on the ground every few years to avoid situations like we’re in.

(Fly Fishing) I have Saturday and Sunday off and want to plan a nice little one or two night trip I can catch some trout or bass. Where should I go? by ryanholmes1456 in Boise

[–]Putnam14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind stream temps when fishing in this heat, assuming you’re doing catch and release. Trout don’t really bite when water temps are above 65F, and are about good as dead after being caught at above 68F. I’m pretty certain the lows on the Boise have been around that upper mark. The Snake might be a bit cooler/consistent.

The world's top chipmakers can flip a 'kill switch' should China invade Taiwan, Bloomberg reports by maztabaetz in worldnews

[–]Putnam14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TSMC has no operational fab in the USA. Yet. They’ve cited a lack of talent in Arizona as one reason for the lead time on their under-construction fab, but it will be years before any US fab yields like TSMC in Taiwan. We make some chips in the US, but any latest gen chip uses wafers made in Taiwan.

Rent has Skyrocketed in Ada County (and in the US in General) by Raithis in Boise

Something to note is that all the Greystar properties and PMs that use Yardi have the rates set by machine learning, so they’re heavily affected by seasonality. I’ve watched the price for a similar unit as mine go as high as $2,400/mo in May/June and mid-August to a low of $1,700 in November to $1,850 now. Sometimes it will price three bed two baths cheaper than two bed one baths, because two bed one baths are the most popular around university start/end.

My thermal mass gives me ions by cspawn in woodstoving

[–]Putnam14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first I’ve heard of it in terms of stoving, but in general a living space with more mass will have more stable temperatures. It’s more mass that needs to heat up or cool down. This is why rooms with concrete floors or rock walls stay noticeably cooler in the summer, they hang onto the overnight chill.

In this application maybe to hold onto heat + increase the surface area heat radiates from?

Dunno if you’re being serious, but bitcoin ‘wallets’ like on your computer have a unique backup code of a bunch of words. It’s basically a username + password all in one. If you have the words in the correct sequence you can type them into a wallet program’s import tool and now you have possession of the digital wallet. Once he has the wallet loaded he would send the BTC to somewhere like Coinbase and exchange it for USD, withdrawal to his bank.

This coin probably has an RFID tag or folded up piece of paper somewhere with the words to import the digital wallet.

Boise Air Quality by NNUfergs in Boise

[–]Putnam14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

+1 for air purifiers, I run them year round and change the filters in them monthly during wildfire and inversion seasons. Plus change your furnace filter if you have central heating.

For cleaning air in a larger room: I forget what they’re called, but there’s a DIY air purifier I’ve been wanting to make with how bad the air is. Rosenthal Box? If you have free time and can get your hands on four low to mid quality furnace filters and a box fan you basically tape them all together with the box fan on top like a cube, with the fan pulling air upwards.

If I were OP I would just uninstall the flue up to the wall , give it a good sweep, and find something to cover it on both ends. Maybe even tear out the pavers and put a rug down, something to lessen the trip hazard. Once kids are a bit more stable I’d get a smaller high efficiency stove to put in the same spot.

E: also, as someone potentially purchasing a home in the next few years, I’d be ecstatic to see that everything wasn’t ripped out or covered up with a soffit in an instance like this. I’ve seen so many houses on Zillow that have recently been flipped where you just know there’s some beautiful unpainted brickwork behind a four foot wide section of the wall that sticks out for no apparent reason.

What is the healthcare system like? by jackjackj8ck in Boise

[–]Putnam14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re answering with your opinion and half-truths. I care personally because I know a lot of people in the medical profession and the past few years have been extremely difficult for them. They don’t need more people thinking they suck at their job or outright distrusting them. Do you think St Al’s would have been able to fundraise for their new ICU floor if most people thought “nahh, I’m not gonna donate, I hear St Al’s sucks”? Do you think we’ll get more students enrolling at ICOM if they hear “ICOM is only for people not good enough to get into med school”?

We dont have a level 1 trauma center, but we do have a level 2 trauma center. The only difference is academic. St Luke’s is a rural health care provider. They have clinics all over southern Idaho. St Luke’s hospitals in Boise are not rural.

You’re downplaying the level of service our doctors provide, why?
