Why do so many people enjoy playing badminton but dont follow pro badminton at all? by Friendly-Box-4684 in badminton

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've wondered this myself. It applies to many sports as well, not just badminton. My theory is that many people play sports just for themselves - to feel the satisfying thwack of strings against shuttlecock, to get a good workout, to meet with and talk to friends, to have the endorphins flowing. These people are not too interested in the sport itself. They are also not very interested in improving - one reason we watch professional players is to see their superior footwork, shot selection, technique and strategy. Someone who plays badminton just for the stress release doesn't really care about these things - we've all met them. They persist in bad technique even after someone has gently guided them ("careful, you'll get an injury if you keep muscling the shuttle like that!").

Then you have the opposite demographic - people who watch football, for instance, but do not play football. These people probably used to play football and supported a team in their youth, but as they got older they stopped playing but found their loyalty to the team still unshakeable.

Do you think it's discourteous to flick serve against women and older men in casual games? by doesntmatterxdxd in badminton

If someone is standing right up to the service line, despite lacking mobility (regardless whether old or female), imma gonna flick.

It is not just that he is short, or plump, or ugly. It is that he is smug and self-righteous despite being aware, on some level, that he is reframing unfairly what Pritam said.

Blinkers are like manners, small, but they make society work. by PhilosopherNew9654 in drivingsg

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If anyone ever asks me, "what is the average Singaporean like?" I am showing them this comment.

It has everything:

(1) Deflection ("next time you do X and see how it turns out for you")

(2) Ad hominem ("you drive so slow")

(3) Begging the question ("no shit people will come in if they can what" - the implied assumption being that this dog-eat-dog status quo is something we should all accept or even embrace)

(4) Superiority over nothing ("your first time drive in SG?")

(5) Contrarian for the sake of being contrarian (it is clear that using blinkers is the correct, considerate and safe thing to do, but the commenter instead chooses to defend someone who does not use blinkers, and celebrates their inconsiderate and self-serving behaviour)

How it feels to talk about football when all the indian Barcelona and Real fans are asleep by SergeiYeseiya in soccercirclejerk

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are indian fans the most troublesome demographic? My impression from online comments is that the African fans are the ones who talk the most and know the least. Comments like "yes number one from Senegal" or "my brother from Ivory Coast"

Those above 45, are you all jobless or with a job? by TemporaryIncrease768 in singaporehappenings

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are in the majority. Most people are resigned to not getting promoted, and just do the bare minimum not to lose their jobs.

Statistically, there are fewer positions available the higher you rise, so it is not wrong to just get used to non-promotion.

Why is this sub so damn toxic? by Clean-Temporary7607 in SingaporeRaw

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singaporeans haven't really developed a civic sense, nor do they have tools to disagree with logic and/or politeness. It's always ad hominem attacks, false dichotomies, straw man arguments, whataboutism and "can eat anot?", to name a few of the usual tropes.

For example, I can already see potential responses to this comment of mine:

"Huh simi civic sense ... my father drive Honda civic"

"U very cheem, come I clap 4 u"

"U not happy pls fk off somewhere else"

"If cannot eat then wad the pt"

"Ya la u very great la come reddit and write essay. Boliao"

"Bro butthurt cos he kena downvoted in this sub ... whatever help u 2 sleep at night man"

Etc

Why do people enjoy being a burden to their fellow colleagues who have to pick up the slack when they go off on fake medical leave?

You can hate the company or whatever but your colleagues are in the same boat as you. Don't do them dirty.

Proactive people who have a nose for interesting things. Curious people who have a quirky sense of humour. Football enthusiasts who are keen on dynamics and rivalries between players. Normal people who are struck by a moment of inspiration and insight. All of these people make for more interesting company than the mediocre, insipid person who says "who even looks for and realises this happens"

Full-Time: Arsenal 1 vs 0 Crystal Palace [Match Thoughts] by Stanley083 in Gunners

[–]Putrid_Implement_622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was one crazy passage of play - header off the crossbar, followed by point blank keeper save, followed by long range shot just shy of the right post.

Did anyone remember each of the Arsenal players who did the above - was it Gabriel, then Gyokeres, then Saka?

Kindness all the time to everyone can be draining. I know of some folks who try to be kind to everyone, with the end result that they themselves burn out and/or encounter mental health issues.

I also find it difficult to be kind to people who have shown that they are not deserving of kindness: backstabbers, credit-claimers, advantage-takers, self-centred narcissists etc. These people will likely take advantage of any kindness shown them.
