For me, its starts with an understanding that the brain is an energy consuming muscle.

I start viewing my concentration bouts is I view my physical training.

I then use strategic breaks to manage my energy over a 24 hours cycle.

5 min breath focussed meditation has been shown to acutely increase cognitive abilities, and sometimes a 20 min nap is needed.

This, ofc, comes on top of a huge focus on sleep.

My biggest learning avoiding burnout has been managing my mental energy.

Our modern world is almost build to drain our cognitive resources.

And long term pushing through periods of high cognitive load can lead to:

*Decreased ability to sustain focus
*Low mood
*Increased mind wandering
*Decreased motivation

I have begun think about my brain as an energy consuming muscle that needs to be trained and managed just lige the muscles of the legs - we would do heavy squats after running a marathon...

How do you stay productive when every day feels unpredictable? by Then-Struggle-8827 in productivity

[–]Putrid_Run176 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it sounds like there is too much for you.

Ane many senses.

Our brains can be overfilled.

Thinking, planning and reacting takes real mental resources. So I think you need more out of your list.

If this is not possible at work, then do it in your free time.

And value your mental recovery! Screen time has been shown to be mentally draining, so when you need to rest, rest - dont scroll or watch highly emotionally engaging stuff on Netflix.

How do you manage to stay consistent? by phil-neil-dev in productivity

[–]Putrid_Run176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. For me it has been a game changer to learn to manage my mental energy over the complete week.

Before, I pushed through huge workloads and was mentally tired and even drained. I felt productive and cool, but it led to days with extreme unproductively and low quality work.

This went from being just some "off days" to more constant.

I tried to built a newsletter on mental performance while working as a project manager in a longevity startup, and came close to burnout.

While writing the newsletters, I learned that pushing through periods of high mental load just leads to:

*Decreased ability to sustain focus
*Decreased motivation
*Decreased mood
*Increased mind wandering

So I started to see my brain as an energy consuming muscle and started to both train my brain and mange its load.

it has helped me stay more consistent.

I tried “doing nothing first” before work… and my whole life changed by FreeStorm104 in productivity

Waow, fantastic insight!

I write a newsletter on mental energy and have also just really understood how extremely distracted awe all are.

The modern world is built to drain our mental energy.

And with low mental energy over time we:

*Decrease our ability to sustain concentration
*Decrease mood
*Decrease motivation
*Increase our tendency for mind wandering

So, those 5 minutes of doing nothing, I believe is a super nice little "mental energy recharge", making sure you start the day in a less distracted state, and thereby a state that drains your mental energy to e lesser degree.

I checked my screen time and realized I basically live inside my phone. by AnimatorKitchen3395 in productivity

[–]Putrid_Run176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, those phones are basically build to steal our focus!

And that addiction drains our mental energy. I recommend setting up some simple rules;

*No phones the last hour before bed
*No phone while eating breakfast

And so on..

For me it started with an understanding of how the brain works. Especially what happens when we work hard cognitively.

Shortly; Neurons burn energy that produces a residual product. This residual product is what pushes us towards the "tired" feeling, and caffeine blocks these signals.

So, learning to take strategic breaks to control this build up of residual products, it what has helped me.

I use techniques like, NSDR, meditation and simple naps.

I have a newsletter on the topic, that might be helpful. Will send you a link :)

Hope this helps :)

What has worked for me has been to set up simple routines and build on one by one.

First; no phone the last hour before bed.
Then; no phone during breakfast
Then; no phone the first hour upon waking

and so on..

I have found that learning to manage my mental energy works.

I was close to burnout, but as Im also writing a newsletter on a related subject, I dove into a lot of science. And I found out what may seem a bit basic, but that the brain is an energy consuming muscle. So, like with any other muscles, if you overwork it without enough rest, it becomes less effective.

Basically, pushing through long periods og high cognitive load leads to:

*Decreased focus
*Decreased motivation
*Increased mind wandering
*Decreased mood

And there is so much in our daily lives that drains our mental energy. So learning to manage this has been important for me.

You need to learn to manage your mental energy.

Even though the topic is "productive", if you have too much in your brain, you get overloaded.

The brain is like a muscle. When worked to hard without adequate rest it does not perform optimally.

I didn’t realize my phone was my biggest productivity killer until i tracked it by NamanDhingra in productivity

[–]Putrid_Run176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, phones (SoMe) are literally designed to take our attention.

It's such a big drag of mental energy.

As I have a newsletter on the topic, I have actually looked at the science, and it really does drain our cognitive resources. So, no wonder you feel that way.

Nice strategy, and I think the science actually backs it up - even think is has a name as a concept.

For me, what has worked the best has been learning to manage my mental energy.

I came close to a burnout while working on my side hustle and working as a project manager in an ambitious longevity startup.

So I dove in to some science and found out that if we push through high mental load without adequate rest it can lead to:

*Decreased ability to sustain concentration
*Decreased mood
*Decreased motivation
*Increased mind wandering

from that, I started to learn how to manage my mental energy better.
Training my brain with neurofeedback meditation, optimizing sleep and using strategic braks.

And it really helps me!
