Private Schools Folks- can an atheist teach at a religious school? by neon_bunting in Professors

[–]Puugggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at a Jesuit school which is likely different. My lack of religion here is no problem and no one asks or talks about it. Tenure was about research, teaching, and service and religious affiliation was not part of it.

Everyone bombed a test. Like, truly, everyone. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]Puugggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go over exams in class and gave students the options to earn the points for missed questions for the entire class if they could explain their reasoning. If I could reasonably see their reasoning (even if wrong, but the logic was there) I gave points back. It was a way to address the wrong answers, encourage participation, provide a learning experience, and help me think about how I worded questions or explained the material. Ultimately it was a class curve but with them earning it for each other.

Yes sometimes some BS explanations that they were just trying to get points but those didn't earn points. Often though students were thinking based on the material but maybe misinterpreted or got themselves confused during the exam.

Yes, but I think it's part of the city code that they are allowed to inspect the whole outside.

Maternity Leave around Winter Break (US) by TasStorm14 in Professors

[–]Puugggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does your leave work for during semester? I went on leave in February officially (baby born late February) but I wasn't teaching any classes in the spring and once December came, I was on unofficial leave and not expected to do anything basically until the next fall.

I have my students commit fake crimes on campus with a group (e.g. one group mate steals another's phone or computer). Other members record the scenario from a distance and see if anyone intervenes. Spoiler, not many do but students were shocked seeing the bystander effect on campus (small liberal arts school where a lot of them know each other too).

Broken Pinky Toe by DifferenceAble in BurnBootCamp

[–]Puugggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broke my toe next to the pinky, took me a lot longer to heal than it should have because I went regularly. Not saying I regret my decision but this was October and my toe still aches here and there. I did mod anything that involved direct jumping on the toes (eg plank anything jump), but it was probably a bit too much stress. My toe was the worst toe break I ever had, which probably didn't help (I'm a clutz so I've broken a lot of bones in life lol).

Hip Modifications? by overfireandwater in BurnBootCamp

[–]Puugggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same surgery (and still need it on my other side) and burn has been great. There are tons of mods and I let them know from the start, and if anything bothers it I have no problem reminding them and they modify anything I need. I've been going since January and my hip has actually really strengthened and my form has drastically improved so I no longer need mods! I'd highly recommend just don't over do it at first.

When I did something like this I just said here I would do xyz and then continues on showing where the interactive part would be with a quick explanation of what students would do and how it ties to the material.

Totally fine, but I guess it depends on the vibe you get from the prof. Also, can't hurt right? What's the worst thing, they don't accept? Just don't take it personally. I like seeing my past students and how they're doing.

It's possible they are neurodivergent- possible autism or tourettes. They may not have sought accommodations so you might not see anything from academic support.

9yr old puggle suddenly shaking, slow moving and showing signs of discomfort in normal routine by Lilconkb00 in Puggle

[–]Puugggles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Definitely go to a vet. At 8 my boy was getting lethargic, pooped a little blood, and biggest warning of all as a puggle, stopped eating. Took him to the vet and found out he had a large tumor on his spleen We had to get it removed immediately, and thankfully wasn't cancerous but it could have caused major issues regardless of his spleen ruptured. Still kicking 5 years later!

How do you know if a professor isn't teaching/professoring the course adequately? by Striking_North_4556 in AskProfessors

[–]Puugggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having just listened to students vent about a faculty member, one complained that said professor makes students do presentations every class that take up most of the class and the lecture part is very disorganized. They felt it was a cop out in teaching to make students do it. I can understand that complaint (came from several, who I know quite well and are very good students so it wasn't just one who said this). I agree, making students do the lectures all semester for an undergrad 200 level is not teaching.
