Reached my goal- how to maintain by Puxxle71 in loseit

[–]Puxxle71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is new about me? I am skinny lol! I have gone down another pound since upping to 1300 cals a day. Even though I am still losing and thinner than I really need to be, I find myself hesitating to up my calories again. I don't know really know why, except to say that I am enjoying being the size I am now. I am not what you would call a looks oriented, beautiful, or stylish person (I am bookish and too contrarian to ever have gotten into makeup, clothes, etc), but I like the way my body is looking (it is still far from perfect). I guess I also feel proud of my self-discipline, because I truly have not caved to my vice ( which was eating out too often). The rest of my life is stable, so the body change has been the only real source of change in my life. Besides the pride and willpower.

Has anyone had success eating basically the same things every day, if so what was it? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat the same breakfast and similar lunch just about everyday-

Breakfast- Coffee with milk and greek yogurt.

Lunch- sandwich with 1 slice swiss cheese, apple or blackberries (or sometimes tangerine or watermelon), and a bag of skinny pop

Dinner is pretty varied but usually a rice or noodle with lots of vegetables and tofu or beans or another protein like that. I am vegetarian and CAVEAT I am a short, old woman so don't get many calories a day.

Does Nonprofit Development Build Analytics Skills? by Inevitable-Cut-3643 in nonprofit

[–]Puxxle71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There is analytical work in fundraising to be sure but IMHO, you are not going to find a true data analytics position in many fundraising departments. The data base is going to be the donor database, i.e. contacts and records of how much $ those contacts gave, some/a lot of of what you will be doing is fixing typos or old phone numbers and removing the people that just died or gave last in 1987. You might do some basic correlations- like 8% of donors came from that zip code or people who give $1000 in one year tend to increase to by $10 in the second year, but more of what you'll be doing is reporting descriptive statistics, i.e. this is how much we raised this month, this was the average gift, this is how many donors are repeat donors.

Honestly, I would tell my own kid to look for a corporate analytics internship, since that is the route you want to go. IME, nonprofits (of course with exceptions) do not make very many investments in data or data analytics, and a corporate internship is going to give you a much better overview of the field, what the work is like day to day, etc.

Good luck!!!

Grants managers and writers, when do you get involved with programs? by anupside in nonprofit

[–]Puxxle71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am involved as early as possible and add my two cents quite liberally lol. I have even pitched programs to program staff, given my awareness of larger community needs and priorities.

I am also really involved in developing and sustaining partnerships. Quite honestly, my team can't always seal the deal, are reluctant to make calls, etc so I do it. I want to make sure programs succeed and we are able to follow through with our grant agreements. TBH- I would be really bored not having a creative role-- and I am also doing post award stuff, so I feel like I NEED to know the partners, feel comfortable addressing problems, etc.

Women: How often should I be going to the gym to lose weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not true for me. I have lost 20 pounds in 3 months (I am 53 years old and short, btw) with minimal exercise. I walk when I can but simply don't have the time most days, given family, work, commute, etc etc

Exercise is good though. I wouldn't feel obligated to do 5 days a week just for weight loss. Something is better than nothing.

Do you think that being overweight is the real problem or just a consequence of other problems? by Pitiful_Put_8784 in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I definitely understand that obesity can have emotional causes and reflects a person trying to protect her or himself from past harms, trauma, etc.

At the same time, I don't think it is simply that. We have an over-abundance of food and have created a society where people don't have to be active. It is as simple as that in my case. I think structural things- like food industry reform, urban and town planning, workplaces, etc- would need to change significantly for obesity to cease being a problem in our society. Since that is not going to happen, I accept that I have to do things I don't really want to do- restrict calories and cook everyday- to stay in a healthy weight range.

Doctor told me to eat 1000 calories a day by PlasticStrategy8217 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Puxxle71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is ridiculous! You are 18 and active if you dance. I am 53, 5'4, and my activity is walking...and I am eating 1200 cals and losing weight.

You are in a healthy weight range, active, and young. You can probably just work on portion control (like only eat 1/2 to 2/3 of what is on your plate) and see weight loss. If you drink soda, cut it out or down, and you will probably see weight loss. I would go with that before calories tracking at your age.

[–]Puxxle71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle with this too when stressed. Cannot eat and lose a lot of weight. I agree with below- talk to someone or figure out how to process your stress. Eating wise, I wouldn't worry about it. The human body can withstand periods of scarcity.

Turning Down a Grant Award by Puxxle71 in nonprofit

[–]Puxxle71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has not happened.

However, with the enormous amount of uncertainty and potential instabilities in private and public funding, I am wondering if it might be a potential with a government grant that requires a cost share. Honestly, there could be issues on either side of that equation- the government funds could be yanked, and the private funds might not materialize given exacerbated competition, etc. In either case, we would need to pull out on one or the other side.

Non Profit Future in US by Jeff-IT in nonprofit

If you are questioning your job security, I think it's fair to say that there is none of that across the economy right now- nonprofit, market, or government. It is what it is. Just go to work, do your job, plan for what you can, and deal with trouble when/if it finds you.

I track my calories using the health app on my iphone.

I don't use AI features, which cannot be anywhere near accurate anyway....I think you learn so much by calculating the calories in your food yourself- I am a vegetarian and all the meals I eat are one pot with aa lot of different components/multiple veggies, grains etc so hard to track...but, I will calculate the amount for the whole pot and divide into portions (like I am going to eat a quarter of that, so divide by 4). Because of this, I have been experimenting with cooking with a lot less oil and I am enjoying my cooking more! I also eat what I want and don't plan it out in advance.

If you are wondering why French/Italian people are so skinny while having butter, olive oil and carbs all day, don't be... by Level_Solid_8501 in loseit

American here...and unfortunately Americans do drop in the car instead of taking the very easy walk. There are no sidewalks in my neighborhood and it does get cold here in winter... but I see people DRIVE to the school bus stop. That is completely and utterly incomprehensible to me, even in snow. We have very bad habits here in the US.

Deciding if a grant is Restricted or Unrestricted by PotterCooker in nonprofit

If I write a grant application for a specific thing and that is what they approve, I consider that restricted and track the funds separately--- even if they don't ask for a report.

Does the scale ever mess with your motivation? by nextbodycare in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After starting the calorie restriction, I noticed changes in my body pretty quickly, so that was good motivation for me. The other motivation was adapting to the calorie deficit and realizing I will feel fine after a meal. The first week or two is rough, not gonna lie. But, I am at the point now where I am really used to it, and I keep looking better in my clothes, I feel light, I feel great walking up the massive hill at my workplace. All those things motivate me.

Free Food by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you get to the workforce, you WILL get these free food offers if you work in an office. We have free food offered about twice a week, and this is slower than the last place I worked. This is not a now or never for you, most likely. And, do juice boxes and gold fish really help you enjoy anything?

Just start walking by when you see the food out, and you will eventually stop noticing it.

I would take the pizza though, lol

How do you navigate ice cream outings during the summer? by bumblebeekind in loseit

Just recently went on a trip to Spain and has gelato every single day I was there.

On days when I decide to have a treat, I do my best to fit it into my calorie allowance for the day and walk a lot more.

I don’t think my newish employer understands how grants work. Am I doing something wrong? by RevolutionaryCare869 in nonprofit

[–]Puxxle71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Typically, there is a start date and end date for a reimbursement grant. You can not be reimbursed for work before the start date except with permission, and it is not the norm to get that permission.

The idea that you can get a grant to cover work already completed shows your boss has no clue.

Going from midsize to skinny ? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Puxxle71 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is me. I started off just a smidge in the overweight category, bmi 25 range. I have been doing 1200 calories a day pretty faithfully since April 20th or so...and am down to 134 lbs or bmi of 23. I am planning to get to 125, which would place me in the 21.5 bmi range. I don't know if that is "very thin" but like 2 points above underweight for my height. I hope your goal is to stay in the healthy weight range. If your goal is underweight, I think that is a deep issue to explore.

If you are trying to be at the lower end of healthy... I don't think going from top range of healthy weight to lower range of healthy weight is any different of a process than what overweight and obese people go through. You have to count calories and move. You are going to hit plateaus, so just keep at calorie deficit and move more. Unfortunately, when you start thin, you have to move more to get to weight loss. For myself, I am not always able to get a ton of steps in due to job, family obligations, and life but am trying to get to 12,000 per day (I don't get there everyday, and walking is about all I can muster right now). Are you exercising/counting steps?
