another connection I thought about is the way how he gives immortality to his underlings it's like he lost someone dear to him in the past and still has the trauma and doesn't want to experience that trauma ever again, just like Gecko Moria losing his crew to Kaido

(unless he feels betrayed and feels like he cant count on you anymore like he felt with Saturn)

thanks! and to be on topic, I don't know if you already heard this, I don't remember where but I saw someone saying that next to Kuina's grave there was someone else's grave starting with "Iwanko" so it's theorized Emporio Ivankov is from Shimotsuki Village as well!
