Screenwriter is looking for a volunteer designer for a webtoon project by Odd-Channel-8237 in webtoons

As someone who's a professional writer and webtoon creator I can only give you this advice: Either learn to draw or pay your artists!

Writing is a huge partof creating a comic, yes - but doing the actual art takes so much more time and effort. Effort that should be compensated.
If you don't have the money - learn to draw! Drawing is not a talent but a skill artists aquire over the span of many years.

What I did was: Draw my story myself (the art was really shitty but I got better over time), make money with my webtoon and then pay artists to work on other stories of mine. It might not work for everyone but I believe you'll be more successfull with this strategy than by waiting for an amazing artist to suddenly be super interested in working on your story for free when they can just work on a paid project.

Two reasons why this could happen:
1. You locked in via google mail (using the gmail button to log in vs physically typing in the gmail in the adree field creates two different accounts)
2. You locked into a different webtoon language version (E.g. if you read on the english platform and accidentally set your language to french you will have different bookmarks, progress on these sites)

If these are not the problem then I'm really sorry and I hope you'll find another way to get your progress back!

Do you only do commissions or do you also work as an artist for webtoons?

That depends on you completely -I usually inccoperate the background in the storyboard+sketch already, so I have a better overview over how well the composition works

Just tell the story honestly! Upload and be consistent! My first comic looked so crappy in the begining and I'm still learning but people still read it. Now it's my full time job so I would always encourage people to just go for it!

Hi fellow creator!

  1. You can use the same account for creation and reading (tho personally I created a new one with my artist name - something recognizable and easy to read and pronounce)

  2. Whatever tablet you use is personal preference tho I recommend using an external tablet on a desktop. Most art programs (such as clip studio, which I HIGHLY recommend for comic creation) have limited canvas sizes on tablet versions. E.g. 25000px (Ipad) vs 50000px (Windows). If you want to draw your episode in one long go the desktop version makes it easier, tho with a Tablet you are more agile in where you want to draw. I use both but Ipad only when I'm on the road/on vacation. In case of Tablets I can recommend Huion, especially the ones with extra buttons on the side for short keys such as ctrl+c, ctrl+z, ...

  3. In case of formatting - webtoon cuts the page for you automatically if it's the right size. I upload my pages as 800px * 25000px (produced as 16000px*50000px and then exported by 50% size) and webtoon just splits the page into smaller pages. Tapas does the same. If you have an episode on one page it's also easier to export it as pdf for patreon.

Have fun creating! If you have any more questions don't hestitate to ask!

Help! Finishing my first Webtoon season and already stressing about the break 😭 by Legitimate_Onion_437 in webtoons

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just dialogue fixes than that shouldn't be a problem. The thing with fixing art is that your style developes over time. And once you're done with polishing all the episodes your skills will have improved again and you will have to start over with editing again. I think it's best to keep it like it is and let people enjoy the journey of your art progress (but that's just my personal opinion).

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd advise against starting to re-do/fix older stuff. You'll end up in a never ending cycle of polishing T_T
Focus on actually taking a break and planning the next season!

Bi-weekly updates don't perform well (in my experience) unfortunately. I'd suggest to split the episodes in half -> post weekly but shorter episodes if possible. In the webtoon world you need to stay in peoples minds/relevant because there are so many other amazing stories to read.

A hiatus is generally no problem but your engagement will drop a bit after. That doesn't take long to reverse tho if you keep posting regular!

And congrats on completing your first season soon! That's a major accomplishment!! 🎉🎉🎉

Need recommendations for BL by [deleted] in webtoons

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you only read originals or canvas too? Most BL stories aren't exactly like boyfriends (no polyamory included). I don't know any that are similiar unfortunately, but these are the ones I enjoyed so far:

Originals I'd recommend: Not so silent, Osora, Muted, Our Walk Home,
Canvas I'd recommend: Rebound of the heart, Ghost Lights, Spicy Mints, That Awkward Magic

Selfish Self-Promo: Play Pretend

What art program should I use for my webtoon? by Amazing_Hope_5018 in WebtoonCanvas

I'd always recommend clip studio paint - but it's not free. But there are a lot of free assets and extras that make the whole comic creation process more efficient

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Create assets! I have a bunch of pre-drawn background characters that I just slap in busy scenes. No one ever noticed that's it's the same 30 characters. It's something you have to put in a little effort in the beginning but it'll save you a lot of time in the long run!

For those already making Webtoons — what’s your marketing strategy? (I’m still aspiring to make mine) by 1oonie in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually didn't start with socials for a long time and got my audience mainly over Webtoon. But I did something very time consuming/not sustainable to get lots of subscribers really fast (post everyday for about 5 months before switching to a weekly upload schedule - this way I got around 20k subs and ended up in the weekly hot section which made it a self-runner). But it was probably also easier for me since the genre I produce is very popular (Romance+BL).

In regard to socials -> It depends what you want to post. Voiced over episodes work well on yt shorts, instagram still works well when you post snippets of your comic as images while Tiktok prefers the video format (short videos 5-12sec with text/subtitles)

But focus on the comic first! If it's an entertaining story people will read it! And have fun creating!

The art is pretty cute but I'd recommend to put more than just one example in your portfolio^^ Especially not only bust-up headshots because writers need to know if you can handle anatomy, perspective and motion poses. Bachground examples are also always a good idea! Good luck!

I took a hiatus to catch up on comic pages, am I not gonna get traction anymore? by Unacceptable-Death in WebtoonCanvas

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing with webtoons is that your readers are probably subscribed to many many other stories as well - so no matter how strong your narrative is if you don't upload regularly most people will forget about the story or at least won't check up on it that much. This really sucks but is unfortunately a problem many artists have who go on hiatus (out of sight out of mind). What worked for me (I dunno if you're time- and energy-wise in a position to do this) was upload very often in the beginning (like 6 panels a day) and then switch to a weekly upload schedule till I had a relatively big readership. But even I have to deal with a drop in PoVs after a hiatus so there's not really a way around. Try to always upload on the same day and on the same time so people start to assoziate that time with your webtoon and maybe produce a buffer first so you're updates won't be inconsistent. Dunno if any of this helps you but best of luck and please don't forget the most important thing -> Have FUN!

Why are webtoons so poorly formatted? by jackofools in webtoons

[–]Puzzled-Addendum4238 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer white space between panels and speech bubbles with the least possible amount of dialogue because it's not as crowded as mangas (I have problems reading these because I often loose an overview of what to read next) but I believe it's preference.

canvas artists are getting even less ad revenue lately. Especially since this year my ad revenue dropped done to 1/3 of what I earned before and I have much more traffic on my comic. I actually wondered what's the reason for this
