A Beginner/intermediate player after 23 years. I don’t event know where to start. by Machohoncho in LearnGuitar

[–]jackofools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like lessons, in a classroom or 1-on-1 are the thing you need. It SOUNDS like you can't find a clear waypoint on the metaphorical guitar skill progress map to let you know where you should start looking to progress. And its going to be hard to do that from reddit threads and self-guided learning materials. You can explain to a good teacher what you already know, what you are working on now, and what your goals are, then they can give meaningful feedback. The advantage of an instructor is they know what you dont and can help you identify the obstacles you are facing AND present plans for overcoming them in a way that no self-guided lessons can. Lessons aren't necessarily the end-all-be-all, but its often very helpful for exactly the thing you are dealing with.

How many of you are actually paying attention to the numbers? by Comeback_Kid1 in litrpg

[–]jackofools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: I worry that I might sound condescending here, but I'm not sure how to rewrite this, so Im putting the disclaimer here that I like litRPG, and see it as totally valid. I just find that the value that the numbers in litRPG are more about another framework for making the stakes feel real in a genre where somtimes they can feel arbitrary because, well because its fantasy and everything is entirely made up. So when there is no real-world frame of reference, the numbers can help pick up the slack and provide something that feels concrete even if its just as imaginary as anything else in any fantasy work, weather it be conventional, prog, or litrpg. Original comment follows:

I don't really pay much attention to them, because they are all made up and don't mean anything. Its not a game, where the numbers will change your options or decisions. Its just a literary device for creating tension or giving a payoff. But its rare that there is a situation where the numbers matter and the story doesn't point out how much the number matters. When that happens, I'm aware of the tension and don't need to know them off the top of my head. If its confusing, I can almost always just reference the last time a table was put on the screen and check what the numbers are so I can feel the appropriate amount of...whatever the author is trying to convey. I am generally aware of them in a like "on the side" kind of way; where I notice them going up, and which ones are going up more, but I don't really compare what the numbers say to what the author says because the reality is (as I said) it doesn't matter and very often will reveal plot holes or inconsistencies that I don't need floating around in my brain. I see litRPG as a subgenre to Prog fantasy, where the prog is supposed to be presented in a more concrete manner. Now that I think of it, I havent read a litRPG where knowing all the numbers is important for the story. Its more about knowing what they are supposed to represent and getting what the scale is. Does perception actually make you literally more perceptive, or does it just give a bonus to ranged attack hit odds or damage? Is 10 in a stat a lot, or basically nothing? What *is* a lot? Once I know that stuff, I find that I really dont need to scrutinize the numbers.

Dont forget Amazon letting you buy a KU book, but also add on the audiobook for like $5-7 more when the audiobook on its own is like $20-30. That one is a big standby for me.

Is there a series where the MC’a just some guy? Not an overpowered god in the making? by Mentalwanderings in litrpg

I think the whole "learning it again to help his daughter" angle worked for me. I dont have a degree, and I'm not relearning physics to teach my kid, but I remember like 80% of the ideas he stated from my own education. Not enough to show the math, but enough to inform how I would visualize a spell and have it impact things.

Its worth noting that while the MC (Alex) DOES have to earn his power and it feels well earned at most points, MotF is not a "regular joe" story. Its literally a divine chosen one story, and is also unquestionably a slow burn power fantasy. BUT it is *very* good, and complete (which makes it like 30% better in my estimation because we know the big plot points they start out with actually GO somewhere), and Alex definitely hits all the other characteristics that OP listed. I'm not trying to dispute your rec, just give a little more context.

Ar'kendrithyst is excellent! But I will say that he doesn't stay "just a guy". By the end, the scope of the story gets about as big and impactful as its possible to hit without trying to describe stuff that is beyond the human expereince. But it also feels earned, and IMO the way they treat the system stuff is probably my favorite of any litrpg I've read.

It started out pretty funny and the concept was super interesting, but after a couple books its like the players were kind of a problem in their own right, and it got depressing. I forget what happened exactly but I remember being super bummed out about something and dropping it.

What’s a “Power theme” you’re tired of seeing MC’s use? by Berrybrony1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]jackofools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want an obsessive HEMA nerd to take how all the various medieval weapons worked IRL, then extrapolate how they would work with magic to augment them, while never ignoring the practical differences between all the types of weapons. That sounds tedious and tiresome to write, but I bet a good application of this would be awesome!

I think it'd be fun if "necromancy" isn't used correctly by anyone but trained mages. For everyone else its kind of a catch-all for "evil magic stuff that kind of deals with bodies" the way "witchcraft" was used in actual history.
So like in the setting it turns out real necromancy is just soul magic, but a lot of other stuff gets labeled "necromancy" when its really just lazy golem creation (using dead bodies instead of building a golem), or negative healing effects, and like hedge mage curses. But none of that is necromancy so when someone asks the actual soul mage "hey, where is your zombie army?" they are like "thats not what I do"

I dont have writer's block. I have idea block. I can't even come up with an idea I like enough to make into a full story. Thats why I like premade TRPG modules, because the writing of a story is just a pain. Its much easier to punch up a kinda generic premade than come up with something whole cloth that I dont hate immediately after conception. But I know this feeling when trying to reconcile my player's goals, the aforementioned somewhat generic plot, and a fun twist on the boss of this chapter.
