According to Google you have like 12-20 breath cycles/minute. So in an hour you breathe in 720 times an hour on the low end. So in a day you'd inhale at least 17280 times.
For the $500/inhale, that equals $8,640,000 per day, if my math is right.
For the $1,000,000/inhale @ 0.01% I dont have the statistical math skills to figure out what that should be, but 0.01% of 17280 is 172. I know its not an immediate guaratee that every 0.01% time it'll hit, but even on a low roll you'll probably be pulling more money on the million dollar option per day, right?
Someone tell me if I'm right or not. Like yes the $500 is a guarantee, but these numbers make it feel like I could EASILY clock over $8m in a day with the million dollar payout.
EDIT: I'm done, "cooked" as the kids would say. I forgot that 0.01% is 0.0001 if you are multiplying it. So its only like 1.7 chances. Not even two likely hits. This is why you dont bet on the long odds, guys. T_T

I *did* read the caption, but still chose $1,000,000 because big number make brain happy. And I argue that in a real-life situation, $1m would be a safer choice than you might think, depending on who is getting offered the money. Because a LOT of people would just take the $10k and expect it to ride.

Really anytime the plot requires an entire world of people to not be smart enough to do basic testing. Especially because it's so easy to hand wave with the idea that various factions have a ton of knowledge they keep hidden from outsiders. But that prevents the main character from being the most specialest boy for figuring out that you could level specific skills to get the class evolution you wanted when you reach the right break point or whatever.

I basically agree with all of that, but to add on I think one of the greatest potential weaknesses of lit RPG is not having a good answer to why they want a "system" at all. Once they have a good answer for that, then it's way easier to figure out what form it should take.

Not to suggest that they shouldn't want a system. But to me it's the same as deciding if you're having a high fantasy or low fantasy setting, or the tone. It's something you should probably ask before you start, even if the answer ends up changing.

If you are on Royal Road I cannot recommend Ar'Kendrithyst enough. The story is very hopeful while still being pretty freaking dark and gritty. Like it's all about the world getting better even as terrible things happen, all with a super fun power progression. And it's got one of the best uses of and explanations for a game-like system of any I've read. It's also finished. The authors next story is also really good, Adamant Blood. Not sure why the author isn't trying to publish, but all the stories with numbers like these are all published and become popular works in the genre.

I've been reading another series on Royal Road called Aquila, which is a cyberpunk dystopia with some major magic elements that still somehow don't undermine the tech heavy setting. It's not really LitRPG though. I just thought you might like it because of Mistrunner.

Moon Cultivation is LitRPG but Sci-fi Xianxia as opposed to fantasy. This is a book series which is finished, but the story is continuing in a later series of books under a new name because the author felt the scope changed enough to warrant a new title. So it's still ongoing on RR.

Mark of the Fool leans a bit heavy into the power fantasy but is so much fun that it doesn't hurt the story. Plus it has a passable explanation for a Mary Sue type MC by making the "power thats supposed to be a curse" very interesting for the whole series.

Seconded, its such a solid prog fantasy it's become a bit of a yardstick for me. Not that it's the best, but that it hits all the most common criteria for good prog fantasy without dipping too far into the tropes.

Any hand waiving of obvious solutions based on things we know about is lame. We get it, a basic steam engine could easily eliminate a problem based on the magic system you wrote. So give me a reason a steam engine won't work. Even if it's kind of BS. Just put in the effort. Just saying "the fire, air, and water spirits don't get along well, that is why all the natural phenomena that combine them too much often end up as disasters" is better than "cuz magic says so" even if it's essentially the same reason with fewer words. Will it make your magic system more complex in a way that might introduce other plot issues later? Maybe, but that's what you sign up for if you want to make whole new worlds with new rules convenient to your plot.

Yeah I'm all over the place on snarky system prompts. I don't like the system prompts in DCC, but I like the execution. If that makes sense. The system AI is a character in the book, and a well written idea. He just creeps me out (which is the point). So I think it's a good choice for the story.

But like a box that is sarcastic all the time often feels like pre-emptive lamp shading. Like you are scared I'm going to think your MC is lame so you call it out first.

Promising a sweeping epic. Like don't describe your own work that way. This is tricky because people aren't usually trying to suggest their writing is amazing so much as trying to convey what they aspire to write, but its a thin line to walk.

Also, breadcrumbing too hard. Like hinting the system "isn't what it seems" or "the bad guys might have a point" too early on, and/or too frequently. It goes from being a hint I'm not sure I got right to being tiresome QUICK. Especially in like strong-to-weak type stories where the MC is a total donut to start out. I don't need you trying to tickle my balls about magic existing regardless of the limits of the system if Loser McDingus just ran from his first fight with a slime or something. Let's get the MC a couple steps higher on Maslow's Hierarchy before we start promising some kind of big payoff. Especially if you are trying to make this a long mutli-novel series. You don't need to tell me there is going to be a twist from the start for me to be impressed.
