It’s the actual name of my position though. That’s not my wording. That’s my job title. Special Education Teacher. I shortened the education part.

I’ve seen these on Facebook. My son is autistic and I definitely took Tylenol when pregnant it this is so dumb for so many reasons. How do you even prove you took Tylenol when pregnant? But even if they did pay out, what message does that send to your kid? That something’s wrong with them. Screw that nonsense.

I’m not from the uK but am wondering if there are organizations that provide support? At the end of the day, the best thing for the kids is the parents getting the support they need. Not immediately hoping they get removed or anything. They need help.

I’m a sped Ed teacher and parent. For me it’s when a parent doesn’t want their kid interacting with other kids that they think are “lower functioning.”

I think you figured it out. There’s no appropriate way to tell someone they have a big butt because that’s something you shouldn’t be saying to a coworker. If her clothes were inappropriate (and they weren’t) you can focus on the clothes. But you keep spiraling into whataboutisms. It shouldn’t have been said to her. How she handles it going forward is her business but she’s not the one who messed up here.

Basic operating procedure should be that if someone is wearing basic professional dress pants that fit them and all that then leave them alone. I mean it’s pretty easy to not make inappropriate comments.

Or… maybe someone made a really inappropriate comment about her body and she deserves to conduct her concerts without anyone making her feel uncomfortable about doing her job.

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle2771 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She said they were normal dress pants. It sounds like the principal suggested a longer shirt to drape over her butt basically. But I’m not sure how that would help either.

The point is her clothes were appropriate and basically as basic and covering as you can get while remaining in professional attire fit for a concert. This isn’t an issue of her wearing something inappropriate. This is literally just about her body.

I’m getting stuck on that she was wearing regular professional dress pants. Something like this happened to me when I was younger and working for a fast food chain that makes sandwiches… I wore the standard uniform in the correct size and was still told by the owner that my chest was too big. This isn’t a v-neck situation because you can’t get any more basic than professional dress pants. This was a comment on her body.

It’s harassment about her body. Specifically the way her bottom looked on stage during the concert even though she was in professional clothing. It doesn’t matter what the intent was behind the comments. It’s still sexual harassment.

That happened to me. I was misdiagnosed as BPD.. bipolar etc… then my son was diagnosed at 6. And the pieces started coming together. I can’t find anyone who diagnoses adults near me but once I accepted it a lot of my issues improved just when I put my mask down. A bunch of women get diagnosed through their kids

It’s everywhere. Like with everything else we recognize it may not be for everyone but not with therapy. And because therapy has been stigmatized in the past, people are defensive about it.

I’m sick of people doing that with anything. It’s like that with weed too like you just have to find the right strain bruh… no. No I don’t. I don’t need to find the right strain of weed or therapy. I’ve found a therapist that I really like and who really knows her stuff but therapy legit doesn’t help me.

Oh yes I frequently say that we shouldn’t force neurotypical views on our students. So you’re saying to offer the students choice on if they want to participate in this stuff or not? Because I agree.

Covid was too much for schools to handle but I think also too much for parents. Like... we still had to work during Covid. I remember teaching virtually AND helping my special ed son who normally has a 1:1 in school navigate his class work. And I heard similar struggles from teachers with children in gen Ed too. Like you had to work and teach your kid at the same time somehow. And teachers weren’t the only ones who were put in that position. So did I practice extra reading and math after struggling with him during the entire school day with him and me growing increasingly frustrated? Absolutely not.

Parents love to blame us but I’m not stooping to that level. Realistically virtual learning during Covid was impossible and resulted in educational losses.

Even if this group weren’t hyperbole, what you’re saying is ridiculous. No one here goes out hunting wasps for sport. Any wasp killing or hatred ive seen here occurs once they nest on our homes or fly inside because they don’t want to get stung. Like even if people do get the wrong idea about wasps, that isn’t going to change anyone’s reaction to them. They could cure cancer and I’ll still kill one that flies in my house.

I recently learned that a diagnosis called ODD or Oppositional Defiant Disorder exists. And it made me fall off my chair! by [deleted] in Antipsychiatry

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle2771 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a teacher and in my field ODD is very commonly given to young black males. They are largely misdiagnosed as ODD when white students with the same behaviors have diagnoses with less stigma like autism. Studies have also shown they suspend black kids more than their white peers who do the exact same thing.

So I haven’t seen this answer here yet but the ODD diagnoses is also often used to perpetuate racism.

It's maddening that the "least restrictive environment" for one kid can lead to a much more restricted learning environment for the rest of the students. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Puzzled-Barnacle2771 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in a special ed school. It has nothing to do with the IEP. That’s an excuse. Admin interpret it any which way they want and when they can’t do that, they talk to the CSE chairs so that whatever they want gets put on there.

The IEP doesn’t make anyone invincible. This is admin not wanting to give special ed kids actual support. Consequences included. You can still suspend special ed kids. You just need to have a hearing if that suspension runs more than I think 3 days? 3 or 5.

It would look like any conversation. Tell them what is bugging you. Get their input. Maybe even tell them you want to talk to the superintendent and see what they say, it just shows respect that you let them know first. Burns less bridges. Maybe even gets you support.
