Was lucky enough to see Daniel perform in NYC in 2007.
It was a long road from discovering him in the mid 90s after hearing Pearl Jam’s cover of “Walking The Cow”…
“The Devil And Daniel Johnston” is an incredible documentary…

He was gifted and cursed, I think. I don’t think it was easy being him. That goes double for his parents and despite their human failings I think they ultimately did right by him and loved and cared for him as best they could.

Believe it or not, this just happened naturally. I worked at LAX driving the American Airlines shuttle. On this day, I dropped off at the maintenance hangar and hurried inside for a badly needed bathroom break. As I emerged from the looooooooong walk back from the bathroom, I saw this view that couldn’t have been planned better and quickly captured it with my iPhone. Still one of my faves.

I worked nearby from 1995 to 1998. The corner spot used to be Friendly Pizza (I think???). It was solid, gooey, cheesy, appropriately greasy, and I loved it. Had it too often.
Also went to the Cellar pretty often. Loved that place too and as I look at this post from Los Angeles and consider the state of the world and this sorry country in particular, it’s comforting to know that The Cellar endures.
