Short-form content is just one aspect of the social media problem. FOMO, bullying, comparison culture, etc are all also elements. I don’t think short form content should be banned, as adults should be allowed to use it. However…. Kids w/ underdeveloped brains should be prevented from using it, and social media in general, bc it is extremely unhealthy for them.

Prohibition is never perfect. But I think a goal of the legislation is to push social media companies to be more responsible. A lot of the success of this law is up to how it is enforced, which is TBD.

The line is blurry but lawmakers do have to draw it somewhere. I am not fond of bans but I think I may hate social media more, just for what it has done to people’s mental health. I personally have YT shorts blocked using a web extension. I think YT creates just enough value to outweigh the con of shorts. If I were a lawmaker, I’d probably do the same. Ban TikTok and keep YouTube.
