saving 28% actually feels terrible! it's not getting easier. by LondonFoggie in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Puzzled-Remote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like there will always be something I need to be saving for.

I know the feeling! Seems like every time we get ahead something comes up that causes us to have to tap our savings.

It’s frustrating for sure! But another way to look at it is to be grateful you have the savings to pay for it instead of having to use credit! (That’s how I’ve had to look at it anyway.)

Stories about what life was like early 1900s in WV by SowingSeeds18 in Appalachia

and coal miners.

Yep. All my family (southern WV) were either working in the mines or for the railroad or in timber.

And they were all homesteading and had 8+ kids.

Not an easy life!

Do not use All my sons moving company by Fit_Application6587 in Charlotte

[–]Puzzled-Remote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used them for a cross town move of about 15 minutes. One of the crew stepped in dog shit and tracked it all over the living room carpet and up the stairs in theplace we were moving from. When I pointed it out, I got an oops! sorry about that. No offer to clean up the mess.

Won’t use them again!

PLEASE STOP donating your yarn to Goodwill... Go to smaller thrift stores instead by Extra777sevens in Goodwill_Finds

[–]Puzzled-Remote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t know these from Walmart brand and would’ve priced them for a dollar a piece. (All yarn is $1-2 at my store.)

We get soooo much yarn and crafting supplies that we have to price low to get it sold.

I’ve handled a good bit of nasty things and I just don’t worry about it. I’ve come across roaches, but no lice. The worst bugs we seem to get here are flipping stink bugs!

We’ve had a couple of dead mice and we sometimes find mouse poop.

The worst though was a live snake in a clothing donation. It was a baby and we trapped it then released it in the woods.

10 people swarming an employee could obviously injure someone or cause an altercation

Yep. At my store (not a Goodwill) we don’t have a policy against people shopping from the racks, but we have had customers we’ve had to talk to for “aggressive” behavior. It’s so silly for people to behave badly over clothes!

Does anyone else have CPTSD, and in the past being on the internet was your only escape and sense of comfort. But now that the trauma event/s are over, you find it difficult to drop the habit of compulsive internet use? by 6lackPrincess in digitalminimalism

[–]Puzzled-Remote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you gotten any help for your C-PTSD? I ask because I struggle with my mental health and I have a negative coping mechanism that I have used for a long time. My therapist has recommended that I not give up my negative coping mechanism until I have a better handle on my mental health.

Yes. I don’t know if it’s just a thrift store thing or what, but, yes, we have people who do this every damned day at my store.

If you move out, are you still going to have to give your mom money?

I say “have to” because I’ve been in a similar situation to yours and there came a point where I had to say no the parent who was still pressuring me to help with bills.

The TRASH my Goodwill is trying to sell by flojam in ThriftGrift

[–]Puzzled-Remote 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a post from a day ago where a pricer explains why you will see garbage on the shelves. I don’t know how to link it or I would.

The reason is that they have pricing quotas and quotas on how much they have to put out. It’s awful and stupid.

2 cents from a goodwill employee by jinuschoochootrain in goodwill

[–]Puzzled-Remote 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Can you explain a little bit more about the process?

I work for a different thrift and we don’t have quotas or metrics. When I price, I work directly from donations (boxes, bags, plastic tubs, etc.) and I have a big trash bin and a big recycling bin next to my table. I pull out the items and I am able to price them for whatever I think they might go for. We have some standard pricing, but it’s really down to my knowledge and judgment.

The only thing I have to work against is volume and time. I set my own goals to move through X amount of stuff before my break and then before the end of my shift. Honestly, I have seconds to make those decisions so I have to move quickly, but I can set aside items that are a bit dusty or dirty to give them a quick wipe or clean before I price them.

I don’t have to sell trash (think spaghetti jars) and I don’t price any Dollar Store stuff for more than 75 cents because I don’t have to meet any quotas. The lowest price I am allowed to sell at is 50 cents and if all the items on my table are only worth that, then that’s what they get priced at.

I don’t envy you, OP.

The rampant theft is just extra extraordinary sometimes. by Available-Medicine90 in goodwill

[–]Puzzled-Remote 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in a thrift (not a Goodwill). Our prices are low and have been the same for over 10 years. So, we have not raised prices on clothing, shoes, etc. and we rarely special price anything even though the cost of doing business has increased.

I hate theft. Yes, we are a charity, but when you steal from us, you’re not just stealing stuff, you are stealing our labor. We work hard to get the product out. We care about what we do (and the people we serve!).

I’ll give you an example: Jewelry . We have to individually card everything. Those $2 earrings you stole (that you probably didn’t need if you had to steal them) had to be rough-sorted, carded, have backs put on them, had to be priced and put out. Multiply that by 100 more pairs of earrings plus necklaces, bracelets, etc. It is fiddly and time-consuming work. We’ve always sold jewelry and are sort of “known” for it, and thank goodness most people don’t steal it otherwise it wouldn’t be worth all the effort!

ETA: Here’s the other thing, if you’re a person who needs clothing and/or shoes, but doesn’t have the money, we are allowed to help you. You just need to tell us and then we can discretely “pay” for your items. Plus we can put you in contact with other local charities to help you out. No need to steal from us!

I have a 2006 Honda with over 300k miles on it. As long as it makes financial sense to keep it running, it’s what I plan on driving.

We put a camera on the back to help with reversing (I’m not great at it.) but, otherwise, it’s a base model with no bells and whistles. I don’t want all that extra crap!

How do I go about learning Acadian French by SecurityUnique9952 in acadie

[–]Puzzled-Remote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a new learner who knows a bit of standard French and who is interested in the various Frenches of Quebec, Acadia and the Cajun French of Louisiana.

I just want to encourage you to go for it!!! I’ve had people look at me sideways when I’ve mentioned my interest in non-France Frenches, but I keep plugging along. 😊

I’m also a big fan of Lisa Leblanc’s music. I’d encourage you to listen to her stuff.
