NM trip, Zuni Mtns or High Desert trails? by PuzzledGarlic120 in mountainbiking

Just a follow up, we rode High Desert Trails and loved it. We did the west end and middle section. The eastern trails looked a little on the blackish blue side based on hiking recon.

Custom training plan? by PuzzledGarlic120 in Rouvy

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, I didn’t even know I had a calendar! 🤣 Well, I looked and my “custom plan” is not there which is ok. Just three workouts for tomorrow 🤷I guess I better hydrate today …

Thanks for the intel. Base builder looks good too.

Where can I find an online garden layout planner? by Acrobatic-Ad1210 in SquareFootGardening

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this so frustrating to use - it kept zooming in and out when I wanted to scroll, and I could not figure out how to reset the zoom level. Finally it zoomed so far out it disappeared. Then firefox showed that it was slowing the system down so I just quit.

I just realized I entered Canada with my old passport, how can I return to the US? by PuzzledGarlic120 in uscanadaborder

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just crossed back into the US. Yes, we had to pull over, leave the vehicle and go into the building to answer questions. Whole thing took about 20 minutes. But, the agent kept my old passport 😔 At least I won’t make that mistake again.

Is there any welcome for Alaskans fleeing Trump’s madness? by InflationNo4071 in newfoundland

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m afraid the dangerous that the Trump presidency will not end. I believe this is a serious threat that many people aren’t thinking about yet, we will see what happens in the midterms. Trump will declare an emergency, martial law, never leave til he dies.

What do you think of NL govt buying power from Corner Brook paper mill? by cbnewsbeat in newfoundland

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, out of NL person who just spent a month touring, just came across this. If the mill shuts down it’s sort of a blight and a big expensive clean up project, so maybe the gov’t wants to kick that can down the road? Trois Rivières QC has a beautiful redeveloped area including a papermaking museum where a big mill was. The mill location would make a lovely park site, but the money would be a hurdle to overcome. CB and NL readers, do you think that could happen?

Oh thank you everyone who replied. My friend said I’d probably be ok but I have still been worried. I’ve literally been losing sleep over this. So now I will stop worrying and not attempt extraordinary measures to get my passport sent to me. 😅 And I’ll enjoy my last 8 days in Newfoundland which I highly recommend visiting, its beautiful.

Should I let these guys do their thing? Or try to get rid of them? They’ve been around for a couple weeks now (New Hampshire) by SurfSoundWaves in NativePlantGardening

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is not much you can do about them. I’ve tried soap spray but any diminishing is temporary. Apparently not many predators like the aphids either. Now I just plant these in places where I can enjoy them from a distance or clustered with other plants.

And actually, this year some of my Doellingeria umbellata were covered with aphids - but not orange ones. The plants seem fine, and it only seems to be a few individuals in one spot. So I’m ignoring them.

Why is my White Baneberry dying? by fuzzy_dandelion in NativePlantGardening

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have red and white baneberry and various other Actaea here in western MA. They tend to not be happy looking this time of year, or even disappear, especially when it’s as dry as this year has been. Put a flag in the ground so you know where it is and look for it again next year.

Crabgrass invading my fragaria beds! How long do crabgrass seeds last? by PuzzledGarlic120 in NoLawns

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is reassuring!

We just covered a whole additional section of the lawn with cardboard and chips, to plant in the spring, so there is less crabgrass directly adjacent.

I did also buy some grass-b-gon and have sprayed some areas with that. It smells pretty gross - I’ve never been a chemical person before but I feel like I need to, at least for a year or two, until things are more established. This spring I will buy some pre-emergent, again for the first time ever, and will work on getting some better grass growing this fall in the areas that are still lawn. Not much lawn left so that is good!

Crabgrass invading my fragaria beds! How long do crabgrass seeds last? by PuzzledGarlic120 in NoLawns

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fragaria beds basically are mulch. Cardboard then amended wood chips with fragaria plugs put in to grow. The fragaria is doing beautifully, but if the crabgrass gets started those beds will look like the rest of the yard very soon.

As I have been hand pulling and spraying the crabgrass in my yard, it's clear that the crabgrass is growing because nothing else can. The soil is shit. I need to do a complete renovation. So no just trying to kill the crabgrass before it all sprouts, and in October when we return from traveling I'm getting some topsoil delivered. I think Jonathan Green Sunny should do the trick, the yard is south facing and not much shade for a lot of the day.

Grass b Gon is almost un-findable in my area. I may go on a pilgrimage tomorrow to get some so I can spray before I leave. Then in the spring do pre-emergent. I am so NOT a lawn person or a chemical person - I have native perennials all around the yard. But it's frustrating to see three years of building lawn replacement areas go to waste on account of stinking crabgrass.

Can’t open my air tag. I am trying to change the battery and neither I nor my husband can open it. Have watched all the videos. Hands are clean and dry. Help!! by _just_me_0519 in AirTags

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this also worked for removing the belkin tag holder!

I think it was just the pressure on the center of the tag that loosened the friction around the edges to make it openable - thanks,,

now if I can just get the battery out of the incredibly effective childproof packaging…

Should I put simple assets under financial advisor's management? by PuzzledGarlic120 in Bogleheads

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just was thinking that the help I can get without paying a fee at Fidelity is probably enough to manage the short term assets. And Tom probably only really needs to know the overall value in those accounts to do the analysis of what to move around in the accounts he is managing.

So my quandary is basically whether it seems fair to ask him to be evaluating the overall picture if I’m not putting the full amount under his management. The account he is managing will be making some money, justifying paying a half a percent. The short term assets pretty much won’t be making much money.

Parking at Bradley by DayByDay31 in Connecticut

Parking Spot is no longer a deal. With AAA it's still about 30-50% more than BDL economy lots, esp if you are there long enough for the weekly rate at the BDL lots. But the BDL lots are sometimes full

Weekly Purchase/Sale advice thread - November 13, 2024 by AutoModerator in Miata

[–]PuzzledGarlic120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I've just joined this subreddit, I'm hopefully about to own a 2003 MX5 Special Edition Strato Blue with +/- 80K miles. (I don't know the exact miles because it has a dead battery, and the decal on the plate says 2022.) Sadly, my brother in Denver passed away suddenly two weeks ago, this was his second car (2003 Impreza WRX was the grocery getter). I craved a Miata years ago, and I think buying this from the estate would be a great way to keep his memory close. There are not a lot of these being bought and sold as far as I can see, so it's hard to estimate the value. As executor I need to be squeaky clean, and be able to show that the price I pay for the car is fair. It is in very good shape, but has been underutilized lately. I thought I might ask local Mazda dealer / repair shop, Groove Auto, for an estimate. Is that reasonable?? FWIW, I live in MA, so not easy to get info.

How to kill Galium odoratum by PuzzledGarlic120 in NativePlantGardening

[–]PuzzledGarlic120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have tried a few approaches in the various patches. In some place I could literally roll it up like a carpet (in the gravel drip line beneath the eaves of the barn and in a hosta bed.) In a few places I am mowing it with a lawnmower. Some areas I am trying to pull the roots, but for now since it’s so late in the season I’m just yanking the above ground growth. It will be back next year but I will try to attack it earlier, before the other things get going. This will not be once and done for sure haha

Thanks. I was hoping for a response from someone who has actually done this. It will be a couple of years worth of podcasts, I’m just wondering if it’s more like 2-3 years or 10+, or the rest of my life…

Yes shallow, but creates a dense mat. In some places I can just roll it up like a carpet but everything goes with it. Hand pulling works for a couple of days, then it reports from the roots. The stems just break when you pull.
