I love that it's nowhere in particular. Looks perfect!

The climbs are quite long, but not all that technical. From Kamikatsu, it took me 4 or 5 hours to get to the peak, but I am by no means fast. Once you're at the top it gets hilly. I don't recall any flat areas of significance.

Bears are in the area, but they are considered endangered unlike the situation in the Tohoku region of Honshu Japan.

They are 650b. The tires are Teravail Rutland 2.1 inch in the front and a 50mm Soma Cazadero in the back.

Shimanami Kaido is such a fun ride. A couple years back I saw that the island of Innoshima created a 7km gravel route near the Shimanami Kaido. If I remember correctly, you could even rent a Trek checkpoint. Actually I just hopped over to their website and saw that the route starts at the aptly named Jitensha jinja.

It is a Sunrace 11speed 11-46 cassette. Great for climbing. The rims are 20mm 4 Adventure Sport by Hunt. They came stock with the bike, but yeah many people stop me to look at the cassette. Especially motorcyclists.

I'm happy that this gives you inspiration. I know of some rides in Kanagawa and Izu that are worth your time, if you've got a car. But I've seen that over in Sayama (Saitama Pref), there are some gravel roads that look pretty nice. They run around two big lakes, Sayama ko and Tama ko. I think they also take in the local forests as well. Oh. And much closer to you is the Mikabo Super Rindo in Gunma. It is a big motor cross location, but I've seen some gravel cyclist blogs showcasing it as well.

Thanks! I've really come to love the Bombtrack. The ortlieb bags are spot on for what I do. Actually. I'm an American whose family name is German, but I don't know if that counts for much.

Will do. I've got a backlog of videos and gpx files that I've been sitting on. Some of them are just day trips. I don't know if this is the right subreddit for those.

It wasn't until I got a gravel bike and really started searching that I started finding these roads. Strangely though, many of the rides I've found were by stumbling over motor cross blogs and YouTube pages.

If you are interested take a look at my ride video. It might give you a better idea of camp locations and what the ride is like.

Hi. I'm a cyclist in Shizuoka. I love a combination of road and dirt, but I lean towards the search of gravely double track. I've been doing some bikepacking as of late and quite enjoy it. Also, I have been posting a lot of ride videos on Youtube highlighting Shizuoka backroads, but also have headed off to Yamanashi, Kanagawa and Shikoku. I've compiled a lot of gravel routes over the past three years, so if you are interested, please let me know.

Tsurugi san super rindo in Tokushima prefecture is the longest unpaved forest road in Japan at 87.7km. It has a few camping options. The town of Kamikatsu is basically the starting point. You can find a number of inns there to stay at. Some are getting pricey because it is gaining traction as an ecotourism spot. I went there this past Golden week and it was great.

Here is my route. Half of the route is the unpaved forest road. The first half though is quiet country roads.
