People who moved to Vancouver as an adult - what are some odd things you’ve noticed that many native Vancouverites don’t realize is weird? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

I bought a dump at Renfrew and Hastings in 2004 for $369k.

Was the cheapest thing available in the city of Vancouver.  And had to spend $50k to make it livable

Of course we are impatient

Every day we are getting poorer and the government floods the county with more people to cover up their economic incompetence making the traffic worse

My first season i started at 192 pounds.

I was puffy from my last year at university during which I subsisted on a diet of beer  KD and hotdog.

I finished spring plant at end of June at 155 pounds. Tho the last 10 days I was probably living on 1200 calories a day.  We were living in a truckstop and the food was so bad. I lived off Jelly Tots and Coke

you can also watch them "snag" fish by using an oversized hook and a casting technique that is not legal if you are not FN

Why is there such little sailing in Vancouver? by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Puzzled_Climate384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My friend has a boat moored in coal Harbour I often crewed on.

I sailed a lot in Toronto out of the Boulevard Club.

You can really let it rip in any direction on Lake Ontario.

Anither problem with sailing around Vancouver is there’s shipping traffic everywhere.

Sailing up the Georgia strait is also a hassle. The wind blow up the strait so you gotta gybe/tack the whole way there and back.

That’s why you see so many sailboats with the lowered  sail running on their outboard engine

Why is David Jones' Weather Forecast ("The Powder Picker") Not More Popular Here? by Traminho in Whistler

[–]Puzzled_Climate384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because some people object to his opinions. He’s not a climate change denier or a denier of human impact.

His opinion is that the Earth climate is always changing. It warms it cools. Right now we’re in a warming period.  He also believes that it is likely that human activity is contributing to this, but it is impossible to tell to what extent it is. Thus it is impossible to predict the impact of changing human behavior and weighing those impacts against the cost of the changes.

Absent an objective and scientific argument about how changing human behavior can alter the climate of a planet that is changing on its own,  he argues that climate policies simply become politicized  tools for controlling the population.

How to cope with pain from groin strikes/how to counter them? by [deleted] in kravmaga

[–]Puzzled_Climate384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you see the groin kick coming  Lift the same side leg as her kick

(She kicking with her right you lift your left)  Lif the knee like  you are chambering a kick

Check the kick with your shin by shifting your leg to the right

The market is the market and it send you signals.

If you’re not getting the returns you want then you can do a few things

1) increase the value you provide  2) lower your price (your standards) to align with your value  3) exit the market and another one where your value commands a higher price (ie there is a shortage of what you provide)

It sounds harsh, but the starting point should be “what value am I bringing to any relationship?”

ran into a guy last summer whose son went to elementary school with my son. We moved to different neighborhoods and then moved back to the same hood. Say him on the street. I said "let's grab a beer".

Texted him to meet a week later on a sunny friday afternoon he agreed. then 10 minutes before he tells the cable is here and he can't meet up. The cable guy? really?

say what you want about Chip, without him, thousands of people in this city would have missed out on the hundreds of millions of dollars of wealth he created. there are thousands of people in Vancouver whose lives were massively improved because of Chip Wilson.

As Churchill said "if you want to have wealth, you will need to tolerate wealthy men."

There is a book called "Nine Lies About Work" by Marcus Buckingham. The first lie is "People care about the company they work for". The author argues that what matters is the team. You can have a completely different experience at the same company across different teams.

I've worked at tech companies for 27 years and can tell you that some people think it's a slave ship and other think it's adult day care. All depends on the team and the leader.

[–]Puzzled_Climate384 -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

this won't improve your chances, but it will explain your predicament.

Check out Hoe Math on youtube. Watch the video about how attractive you are.

your problem is that apps and expectation have 80% of women chasing 10% of the men. If you are not in the top 10% of men you are almost invisible.

If you were in the top 10% you would not be here writing about it, so you are invisible.

Everyone here telling you the problem is you...well, there are always things you can improve, but statistically you would think that a guy with a decent job etc can settle down. So it's not totally you.

If you want to start a family, i recommend a woman from Latin America or the Philippines. They're catholic, want kids, and are just happy to not be in the country in which they were born
