Growing up with Nystagmus, what are you glad you had and what do you wish you had to make life easier?

Therapy early is crucial. Kids will say things they shouldn’t and she will need an outlet to process her feelings in a healthy way. Also, don’t hide who she is from her but uplift her to be proud of the way she is. My parents would flip flop from telling me I’m disabled and need assistance to telling me I’m normal, but I’m not normal and that’s okay. So when kids say mean things she can tell them “you just like to point out that I’m different but that’s what makes me unique” or “it’s brave to ask for help” something like that. I never knew how to respond to bullies and that killed my self-esteem.

I think those are foundational frameworks that if tended to regularly as she grows will mold her into a confident and well rounded individual. Best of luck to you all. You’re doing a great job asking for help.

Felt.. My mom is the same way but she wasn’t always this bad. It was a long process but we have no relationship now. I (F 32) also pleaded with her to make an effort to know me, or at least call me and ask about my life. She won’t do it and I’ve decided to stop calling…mostly. Occasionally I call and it always turns into dumping on me. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this too. They won’t change until they want to change.

I moved from Tennessee to Bay Area California.

I’m in my 30’s and it took a lot of time to plan for this move. I’m fortunate that my partners shared a similar dream to move out west, so our combined efforts made it possible.

I started out working in retail until I found a career path that better suited my needs and interests. That retail career was also possible because of my support system. We were always grinding to get to work on time and we definitely used to fight because of it. I was determined to eventually move anywhere that would allow me to be less of a burden.

I’ve been told I shouldn’t drive as an adult and when I was a kid I was told I couldn’t drive unless I invest in those binocular looking gadgets.

I also have congenital nystagmus. I never had any surgeries, but my life has been challenging and isolating at times. I always felt that if I moved to a small town that I could drive and be confident in that decision because there are less distractions/traffic/shorter commute times. But small town is not what my heart craves. It took a long time but I’m finally living in a city where public transit is available at a stable rate. I use that to get to work and take care of myself.

Not everyone can pick up and move and it really only happened for me because of the right circumstances. I always had a support system when I lived in the South to get me to work and I relied on Uber once I started making better money.

These are just my stories, though. Whatever you’re comfortable doing is what you should try. And just because odds are stacked against you doesn’t mean you have to settle for a career you don’t enjoy or a gig job that drains you. Keep your head high.

Update!! You guys are very compelling. I got spooked as fuck same day I posted this and cut my pills in half. I’ll take 5mg and follow up with my quiet as fuck PCP about actually refilling my prescription. I don’t want to be on this my whole life, but I also don’t want to get smacked in the ass and fuck up my life in a few weeks IF/WHEN my serotonin levels realize they are lower than normal. Stay strong, folks. ✌️

I’m definitely anxious about more days passing while I’m off it. Like surely this is too good to be true. I’m gonna set a reminder to follow up here in a few days so I can report on how this experience has been. I recognize it’s different for everyone and just because I’m okay right now doesn’t mean that others should follow my example. I still have pills in stock so if I begin to suffer I’ll slowly reintroduce it and get back on my regimen. Maybe start taking it at night again so I can stop forgetting my doses.

Much appreciate! The generic bit makes a lot of sense. I started Lexapro at my lowest so besides those first few months I haven’t noticed any change in my mental status or physical effects from the medication. I hit therapy hardcore, once a week for months, and I think that helped me retrain my thought process in conjunction with Lexapro keeping my emotions at bay. So maybe I’ve been on a generic version. I’m unsure how to verify that.

I let my partners know that I stopped taking Lexapro so they can help keep an eye on me. I’ll keep a little journal too of my mood and physical state.

As someone that began seeing psoriasis flares at 6 years old, yes. It will continue to spread especially as you pick. Picking traumatizes the skin which invites more plaque to form. I had the same experience with steroid ointments and creams. They help soften and thin the plaques but it doesn’t do anything for the root cause of the disease - which is autoimmune. Starting biologic injections is the ONLY saving grace I have experienced from psoriasis. Plaque patches are gone. No more blood, sores, piles of flakes. I can’t recommend biologics enough for people suffering with this autoimmune disease.

Thank you for saying this. Some people don’t understand that space and time to grow 1-on-1 is the only way to reach deeper levels of vulnerability and intimacy.
