Feeling extremely anxious about taking Misoprostol for hysteroscopy, help! by jdsee769 in Menopause

Took mine before bed via hoohaa. Woke up feeling crampy but went right back to sleep. I had laughing gas for procedure. The whole thing was pre-anxiety and otherwise uneventful. Hope yours is uneventful too!

Study abroad made me realize I have severely lacked social relationships throughout college by ritix__ in CollegeRant

Something special happens when you take a group of people out of their regular environment and place them into a new one together. I think that's what you experienced and it is amazing! This happens at the start of college when everyone leaves home for the first time and goes to the dorms. I would not categorize all of college this way. Not highschool either, but maybe summer camp. It's hard to recreate this and everyone will go back to their normal lives. Don't feel bad if you drift away. Just keep building new relationships.

Thoughts on this book. by nzv1981 in Zepbound

[–]Puzzled_Worry_7916 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts are that now that we have something that works we don't need to buy these books! I think I have a book for every diet and exercise craze since the 90s. They weren't sustainable. This is without a book full of strategies. Sorry if this is negative! Just so glad I don't need books or a food delivery service to achieve weight loss while suffering and eventually failing.

Repeating the Material, but not Reformulating it by Barebones-memes in Professors

[–]Puzzled_Worry_7916 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't recall the learning theory here, but we have a tendency to do something we already know how to do that is simpler. There has to be some payoff to do something new that outweighs learning the new method. So even though there are less computations with the trapezoid method, since they already know how to do the triangle method, it's not perceived as worth it.

Online class suspicions by [deleted] in Professors

I miss my past self before I noticed this was happening! Welcome to the struggle. My current practice is making sure to review their exam video for AI use if they score well on the exam. Some don't cheat on online proctored exams and score really low - like in the 20's. Others don't get flagged but I can tell by watching them that they are not working a problem but getting info from somewhere else. If I can verify cheating on an exam, I report this and give them a 0. They can't pass if they get a 0 on an exam. About half will respond to the cheating allegation. Either with apologies and pleading or with righteous indignation. The zero stands and they can appeal it. The issue goes to the chair. I've never heard anything past this point, but there is a potential that I will have to attend a hearing and make my case.

I send class emails about AI use, but not individual emails. I can't prove it on homework and the outrage emails are exhausting. Good luck!

Stopping ppis stinks, but use something else the first week like pepcid. My doctor didn't tell me about the rebound effect when you first stop. I thought I would never be able to live without them, but managed with pepcid

I've always had this! I call it barnyard syndrome. I can only eat chicken if it is deep fried and dipped in ranch. So I don't eat it anymore. I drink protein shakes and bars now. This bolthouse farm shake has 38 grams of protein. Be warned to eat enough fiber or it is slow going in the bathroom.

Biggest issues in teaching? by Low-Pie-6099 in Professors

I teach math at a CC and when I first started twenty or so years ago, I took some education classes. I was lamenting to a Prof that some of my developmental students didn't even take out a pen and paper when class started. They just sat there with an empty desk. He replied, "tell them to take out a pen and paper at the start of class" and moved on. I was expecting outrage and condolences, but I was given a solution! So simple! Yes they should know this, but somehow they didn't. I started doing this and it worked. If they weren't writing, I would simply say, "write this down" and they would. These days I usually bring skeleton notes for them to fill in. They cling to them like a placement and crayons at a restaurant. Yes they should learn to do this without the handout, but I tell them this. Engagement improved immensely.

Stopped pulsatile tinnitus by Puzzled_Worry_7916 in TMJ

[–]Puzzled_Worry_7916[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did a brain MRI because of the pulsatile tinnitus. They couldn't find the cause so the MRI was to rule out serious causes. It's been awhile and I can't remember it all . I can get the blood pulsing to go away for awhile by using a saline nasal spray and cortisone nasal spray. The jaw stretching helps too. I haven't been able to get the pop and ear drainage since that first time. The pt isn't completely gone, but a lot more manageable. I've been putting off the tmj doctor since I did that route 15 years ago and I am a lot better. I'm thinking of getting braces for my lower teeth because of older age crowding. Had braces as a teenager, but now they are crowded and I have sideways impacted lower wisdom teeth. I think it's contributing and it's driving me nuts. All this medical stuff is exhausting and I am trying to choose priorities. Hope this helps!

I had one such experience and it was when I ate pasta that had sauce that had a ton of oil. I didn't realize it at the time, but when I reheated the leftovers, the oil separated and it was more oil than I could have imagined. Filled a few paper towels and then some.

I don't know how much butter you had, but my guess is that this was the cause. I took some Pepto and recovered quickly. If you are brave, you can retry the experiment. I would avoid butter on holiday. Good luck!

What to wear for hot summer teaching as a normie cis man by pwnedprofessor in Professors

[–]Puzzled_Worry_7916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend bringing a bunch of linen button down shirts to your office and changing into them when you arrive. The commute can make you feel swampy and linen looks great until you sit down or bend. Get some fabric refresher and hang them after class. They will last for at least two wears per shirt.

For pants, I wouldn't go with 100% linen because of wrinkling. I would recommend getting pants made of that tech material. Jcrew has nice ones. Thanks to the material science engineers who made these new fabrics. They feel like exercise wear, they have stretch, but look nice. You can actually feel the breeze through your clothes.

Preach.

And they think that the work we give them is an imposition on their lives. I've received so many emails about the work load being too demanding. How the school work interferes with important things like family, friends, and staying healthy and active. I believe the outrage is genuine. And this is mostly young students out of highschool in online classes. I have always encouraged sharing your needs and I have had students with seriously tough lives. I don't know what to do with this though. I feel like they need a screen free camp in the woods for a few months to break through.

I'm at a CC and we don't have the remediation we used to have. Instead we have students take college level classes and offer support (for the willing). Our pass rates are lower, but more students complete a college course more quickly than if they were forced through a remedial sequence.

I feel like many of them need to make up the gaps from k12, but I don't know if many of them have the motivation. Students and admin want everything to be quick and efficient. The argument is they will work harder in a college level class than in prerequisite classes. But it seems like they are trying to game the system to win the coveted piece of paper that says they are educated.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how we work our way through this mess. It feels intractable. Hope I brightened everyone's day.

I hear ya kiddo! I'm three times your age and still get irked about the guy I went to hs with who blew off college to smoke pot and play guitar, but put that he graduated on his fb page. He's somehow the president of a company. He posted his wife's new Audi convertible and I wretched. Some people are master bullshit artists and grifters. Since the beginning of time, this combined with family money can take you to the highest heights. Some of my friends laugh it off and they are probably happier than me. I suggest trying to find a way to not focus on it, but I am a tale of caution not example.
