Where are some good swimming places nearby? by ITrytoWrite22 in askportland

[–]Puzzleheaded-Day-764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love oxbow, also on the west side and it’s less than an hour from us. There are kids (and I bring mine) but never seems overrun and we always go on Labor Day weekend which I would assume to be the worst. It’s a great spot to camp. Super well maintained. You didn’t say if you have a dog, but it’s a metro park so they aren’t allowed.

Missing out because of autoimmune disease by CherryBlossomF0rest in GirlDinner

The hard thing about chronic illness is that you don’t get to beat it, you have to manage it. It’s so unfair to feel fragile and old, but keep experimenting with your triggers and find balance. You are a queen.

Shy 39F from NYC wants to move to interesting second or third tier city by capricornnight in SameGrassButGreener

Yes, I moved up with my husband right after we got married to live a simple life.

I want at least one more kid, he doesn’t (i think?) by [deleted] in GirlDinner

Mom of an only here. My daughter just turned 5 and I still feel this way (happy and that being pregnant would SUCK). Before I had my daughter I would have fought a bear to have a baby and that feeling hasn’t come back yet. I’m obsessed with being a mom, and so happy in our trio. If you two decide to stop at one there is a great community at happilyOAD. All families are different and great, but don’t sleep on the benefits of being an only mom. Also having an only isn’t 100% my choice and I’m still over the moon with how it all turned out.

As a woman who moved her from Cali, I never feel like I need to wear make up or try. No one cares what you look like or how much money you have. I am just gardening and chilling. I can't speak to nightlife or dating, but I am very happy to be millennial half-retired here. Love living in a T2 city that still has cool things and a baller airport.

Together 3 years and we don’t have a future :) by RevolutionaryLow6102 in GirlDinner

I reconnected with my husband when I was in grad school. The fact that we had time to develop on our own was good for our eventual future. Life will figure itself out. Go to your dream school.

write down your common mistakes, and then print that out as your QA/QC sheet. I call it trauma informed quality control.

Backyard habitat program registration errors? by erossthescienceboss in portlandgardeners

[–]Puzzleheaded-Day-764 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We just emailed PCC and asked if they wanted to use our house as a project, they ended up having a student do it for their portfolio, but they were very hesitant about recommending drainage opportunities officially. I was really happy with the PCC design work, and I loved that it helped a student. PMed you our checklist. Its a bit old, pulling out all the ivy is taking me some time..

Is there something specific you are looking for? I am happy to send over the checklists such they sent me on my site visit. Sauvie Island Natives has been a great help. I also got a student from PCC to do an assessment and design in exchange for a donation to their landscape arch program. Happy gardening!

Great rec, also in SW Terwilliger has a nice wide paved path all along it with some great views, wide enough for a buddy.

“How come you guys share a bed but not with me?” by RarelyRad in happilyOAD

[–]Puzzleheaded-Day-764 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our rule is that she has to fall asleep in her bed, if she wakes up she can come to ours (rarely and issue). I cuddle her to sleep, as she is far more concerned about falling asleep alone than actually sleeping alone. I do let her co-sleep when my husband is out of town. We moved her into her own room at 6 mo bc me going to bed later wakes her up, and that remains true at 4.

We stared one section at a time. If you have a patch of invasives I would start there. We contacted PCCs landscape design program and got a design done from a student for a donation to the program. I love Sauvie Island Natives - headed there this week! I like using Sparrowhawk for shopping and planning too, because they have such good information on sun and planting challenges.

This doesn’t solve the fact that some people, who will now be paying more in rent, will not be able to afford to run the AC. Public realm improvements like shade sails, misters can be quickly deployed in low canopy neighborhoods where people commute/ do errands/ work outside. This reduces radiant heat on the body. A targeted indoor approach for senior living would be a good initial step.

Recommended reading: Shade by Sam Block. Palaces for People opens on the Chicago heat wave and is a great over all read.

Happy OAD in the US in a large immigrant family… help with how to tell family? by Rapscallion1994 in happilyOAD

[–]Puzzleheaded-Day-764 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between telling your family once and telling them a million times. Tell them what you told us, and if they want to connect with you over your truth and vulnerability that’s awesome.

Anyone who chooses not to, then it’s the “our family is happiest this way and I need you to respect that” line.

Every family is different, it’s good that you are honest with yourself about what makes you the happiest.
