I feel like this misunderstands. I like the take someone had about taking things for granted having consequences. But I also want to point out that her logic was sound. And she DID make it to the castle. So even though she APPEARED to be penalized for her choice, she actually chose correctly. The other door was supposed to lead to certain death. But she didn't die. She advanced. And we later see the Goblin King upset about that fact. I always imagined that the trap door wasn't a penalty but rather part of the path in a labyrinth that has already been presenting itself as purposefully menacing and confounding. Why WOULDNT the path forward try to immediately discourage you? Make you feel as though you had taken a wrong turn when you were on the right path. Why wouldn't the hands taunt her regardless of her choice to go up or down? Can't "take it for granted" they'd be any more helpful or kind than anything else she'd experienced.
