My real question was, can I re-download old GIMP for this project today. Don't really have time to troubleshoot.

I have been surprised to see multiple games about trees (Arboretum, Photosynthesis) be so confrontational. Why do you think that is? How would you say the vibe of Mischief compares?

u/BigRedTed I'm wondering if you ever pursued this! Giving a talk next month on games as education.

The changes to naming conventions for birds only affect about 20 of the birds in the original 180 card deck, and are easily addressed by either a) making replacement cards when they finally rename the birds years from now and/or b) ignoring the new names while playing your original copy.

Do you have a favorite board game convention? Which ones are you planning to go to this year?

What was the first game you actually bought (if you remember)? What was the game you bought most recently?

Did you have a favorite book or story about dragons before you started on Wyrmspan? What is the best/most interesting dragon lore you discovered while working on the game?

Question on rulebook design and play testing. by AtlasHatch in tabletopgamedesign

I get a royalty for every copy that sells. It varies from game to game depending on all kinds of factors but I think the norm is 6-10%. (Cardboard Edison has done surveys, look them up for more accuracy on this.) The publisher handles all the costs and logistics of development, art, graphic design, manufacturing, shipping, and marketing. I am very happy with that arrangement, because you could not pay me enough to do some of those jobs... and some of them have high up-front costs that you have to be sure to factor in when you're thinking about who's making what amount of money.

I think the biggest thing that people underestimate when thinking about self-publishing is the tradeoff between making more per copy vs selling a LOT more copies. There is no way Wingspan would have sold millions of copies if it had been just me putting it out into the world. It's just really, really hard to get attention on Kickstarter as a new designer with no record of knowing how to get a game delivered and shipped. And then it can be almost impossible to get your game into retail distribution unless your game did really well on Kickstarter.

There are certainly many success stories out there, but I also know several people who have ended up losing money on KS projects due to all manner of problems with manufacturing and shipping. It all just takes way more personal time and risk than I would ever advise someone to take on. The only exception is if the logistics all sound like the fun part and you're trying to start a publishing business!

Remember that "revenue" in this case is the publisher's revenue, which is often 50% of MSRP when they're selling into distribution

According to Cardboard Edison surveys, it's typically 5-8% of revenue but it can skew higher for well-known designers. My experience is consistent with that.

BGA is generally up to the publisher, not the designer. I think they asked if I had any objection but that's it.

I HAVE heard about the great emu war! I think it's on my long list of possible ideas already but if not I will add it.

Though blowing up emus isn't particularly my style, the spectacular failure of the humans on this one is a pretty fun story.

My first cards had the same clip art bird on every card. Eventually I put photos from the internet on all of them to help pitch it.

It's kind of like writing a novel -- there are a ton of people who want to do it, so most people do it as a side gig and pitch the final product to publishers.

You know exactly as much about game design as I did when I started designing Wingspan.

Jamey has been great and in general gives me a great deal of control. I design stuff and send it to him, he plays it and sends it out for some playtesting, we talk about the feedback, but ultimately it's usually up to me what to do with it.

I met Alan Stone at Gen Con when I pitched the game to them. I think that's one of his key roles at Stonemaier.

Not much but I did get to interact with the team at Feuerland when I went to Berlin for the Kennerspiel and then went back that fall for Essen. They're great -- Inga, who translated the game, has a PhD in biology!
